The Lath House ~ The Most Unique Wedding Ceremony Location

Minnesota’s most unique ceremony site…decades in the making

Considered the heart of The Gardens of Castle Rock, the Lath House has a long and storied history decades in the making.  In fact, the space’s uniqueness is incomparable to all other ceremony sites.

Grandpa Switzer in front of the original nursery building.

The nursery began in 1926, with one of the original nursery buildings located in the Lath House area. By the early 1950’s, a pole barn addition was constructed where the Lath House currently stands.  But in early December 1981, at the height of the Christmas tree and wreath season, a massive fire broke out in the middle of the night.  As you can probably imagine, a building filled with Christmas trees and wreaths didn’t take long to burn to the ground.  It was a total loss.  All that remained were some scorched poles on the former building’s north side.  Look closely and you can still see some of the charred remains today.

Fast forward a couple of years…… As the retail nursery continued to grow, additional display space was needed, especially for the shade loving perennials…. think hostas, pulmonaria and lilies.  Glenn’s father, Garry, quickly realized the spot where the pole barn once stood would be the perfect spot to build a shade loving perennial greenhouse.

To create the greenhouse, rows of round utility poles were set throughout the space and a 2x 4 grid pattern was constructed creating an open-air style roof.  Rolls of lath boards were then laid across the roof structure creating the perfect partially shaded space for perennials to flourish.

Early 1950’s pole barn addition.

Now you may be asking yourself….” What are lath boards exactly?” Lath is a narrow strip of straight-grained wood.  Typically used under roof shingles or tiles, on lath and plaster walls and ceilings to hold plaster, and in lattice and trellis work.  If you’ve lived in a turn of the century home and done any remodeling work, you’ve probably seen lath boards behind the plaster.

The fire that started in the Christmas Tree Room of the pole barn resulted in the building being a total loss.

The Lath Greenhouse continued to be in use until 2006 when the business transitioned out of retail nursery sales to landscaping design and construction.   To learn more about the history of The Gardens, CLICK HERE.

Over the next six years, the Lath Greenhouse was a bit neglected and forgotten as the space was not utilized for the landscaping design and construction business.

As interest in hosting wedding on the property increased, Glenn designed and built the Grand Promenade ceremony site to appeal to couples looking for a classic outdoor wedding ceremony site.  To learn more about the Grand Promenade, CLICK HERE.

During the first three venue tours, Glenn would show potential couples the Grand Promenade ceremony site.  Every single one pointed to the Lath Greenhouse and asked, “What’s that?” By the fourth tour, Glenn decided to add the Lath Greenhouse into the tour and ask couples if they would be interested in seeing the venue’s “rustic ceremony site”.  With that the Lath House ceremony site was born!

As interest grew in the Lath House, so did the love and care Glenn provided to the space. Since the Lath greenhouse structure didn’t have lath boards all the way to the entrance, Glenn began an arduous quest to locate more lath boards.  But not just any lath boards.  These needed to rustic weathered pieces attached with wire…. basically, snow fencing that had seen some long dark winters.  After being frustrated by weeks of unsuccessful searching, Glenn mentioned his dilemma to a friend who, wouldn’t you know, said, “I’ve got a bunch of old rolls you can have!” Problem solved!

The Lath House was built in 1982 to serve as a shaded retail space for perennials.

As a fluke, Glenn decided to lighten up the Lath House by hanging some leftover Christmas lights from the nursery throughout the roof structure.  Couples loved the lights so much that in 2018 the lights were replaced with over 1,100 feet of LED café lights.

The Lath House surrounded by retail nursery items circa 1986.

Now what’s with all the beautiful grape vines covering the Lath House?  We can only take partial credit for those.  The other credit goes to Mother Nature!  Wild grapes spread organically and have always been around the nursery.  In fact, take a stroll around the grounds and you will very well see them!  Since the 1980’s, there have been an abundance of native Minnesota wild grapes growing in the back of the Lath House or today what is considered the front of the space where the natural wood ceremony arch stands.  Glenn added addition winter hardy table grapes (totally edible) around the entrance of the Lath House filling it out the lush inviting look.

The black landscaping fabric that covers the ground was the original flooring used when the space was the perennial shade garden and has served its purpose well.  Glenn is currently working on a design to replace the fabric with landscape pavers to further enhance the beauty of the space.  No timeline is set, but we are excited to see the finished product.

In 2012, the first wedding ceremony was held in the Lath House.  The ceremony spot continues to be one of the most popular at The Gardens of Castle Rock.  With the ability to accommodate up to 300 guests, the versatility of the space is second to none.  While it gives off a rustic vibe, the choices of seating (black chairs, white chairs, or benches), décor, draping and floral can all change the feel making no two wedding the same……and isn’t that what being unique is all about?!

As The Gardens of Castle Rock looks to the future, we continue to look for ways to enhance the beauty of the Lath House while allowing its true essence to be sustained….one of uniqueness and beauty found nowhere else.

To give the table a rustic appeal, 6’ x 6’ timbers were used on the bottom while smooth cedar boards were used for the table’s surface.  Traditional timber frame techniques and joinery were employed to create the table’s formidable base while bridge washers and ¾” galvanized machine bolts were utilized to stabilize the table’s legs.  There’s no chance this table will blow over in a strong wind!  Once assembled the table was covered with a clear coat of polyurethane to pull out the natural grain of the western red cedar.

One of the most impressive things about the King’s Harvest Head Table is its 50” width creating an amazing amount of real estate to design the most memorable tablespace. The table is also very functional with the ability to configure into four different lengths to accommodate up to 22 people (see chart below).

Wedding Reception Garden Pavilion

The Garden Pavilion’s unique time-honored craftsmanship provides a unique backdrop for your picture-perfect wedding day.

What could be better than being gathered in a beautiful place with those you love celebrating the best day of your life? Not much, especially if that beautiful place is under the impressive hand-hewn beams of the Garden Pavilion as you gather with your wedding party for a celebratory wedding day toast.

It’s official…..drinks for the wedding party! Photo Credit: Sweet Shibui Photography

As one of the most remarkable structures at The Gardens, it’s easy to see why the Garden Pavilion is the star of the Garden’s reception patio. Venue owner, Glenn Switzer, had a hand in every aspect of the design and construction of the impressive post and beam timber frame structure with hand-hewn timbers making it a unique one-of-a-kind venue feature.

Whether you decide to stage your reception bar service under the Garden Pavilion or decide to use the space as a fun snack or dessert bar, the Garden Pavilion’s versatility is just another reason The Gardens is the perfect place to create a wedding day that is completely and uniquely yours!

It all started when Glenn was brainstorming ideas to create a covered structure for the reception area. At that same time, a friend and local farmer who was clearing a farm site offered Glenn an opportunity to harvest tall old spruce trees on the site. Never one to pass up the opportunity to gather timbers, Glenn jumped at the opportunity. To see the harvest process, CLICK HERE.

With 15 large spruce trees harvested and transported to The Gardens, the next step was figuring out how to incorporate them into the covered structure Glenn was designing. At this time, Glenn had extensive experience in designing and crafting garden pergolas and arbors, but this was a whole new ballgame. You know the saying….” Go big or go home.” The desire to create a memorable structure was strong so Glenn chose to go big!

After consulting a friend with extensive construction experience, Glenn knew exactly what he wanted to create……an impressive hand-hewn garden pavilion. Drawings were finished and engineering was completed, it was time to start building!

Hand hewing the timbers of the Garden Pavilion took Glenn a bit longer than expected….to say the least!

Enter the traditional technique of hand hewing. The method has been around for centuries commonly used before the advent of the industrial-era sawmills. Hand hewing is taking a round log and using an axe to shape it into a square to create post and beam structures. To say its hard physical work wound be an understatement! Take a look by CLICKING HERE!

Glenn originally estimated that with the help of a friend, they could complete the hand hewing over a couple weekends and install the structure when the Pavilion Bathrooms were being constructed. After the first log was hewed, it was clear that it was a much more labor-intensive project then he had originally thought after the first log was hewed. The hewing of the logs would have to wait till winter, as well as the construction of the pavilion. After 300+ hours of hand hewing over the winter of 2016-17 the timbers were ready!

With the hand hewing finally complete it was time to assemble the structure. Typically, structures like this would be pre-assembled and dismantled elsewhere and then reassembled into the space. But the timbers were so large, that they required to be assembled in the space that they would be permanently located.

The concrete and stone footings were already in place from the earlier construction of the Pavilion Restroom building. Many of the stones were excavated from exactly where the Garden Pavilion stands now and hand split by Glenn…. sparking an interest in the joy of hand quarrying granite blocks. Interested in seeing how it’s done? CLICK HERE.

Setting and securing the timbers of the Garden Pavilion was no small feat.

Once the hand hewed posts and beams were sorted and cut, it was time to stand the posts up. Girts between posts created bents and the bents were all connected with wall plates. Angled knee braces stiffen the structure and help carry the weight downward to the footings. Glenn designed and fabricated the metal brackets that make the critical connection that held the wood posts to the stone footings. With the help of the skid loader for the lower timbers and a crane for the ridge beam and rafters it took approximately three weeks to set the structure. With the ridge beam 18” square and 32 feet long there is no doubt this is a strong and sturdy structure. In fact, the process of hand-hewing the ridge beam can be seen by CLICKING HERE

Now it’s time for a fun Gardens fact…. Did you know the only part of a tree that is alive is the bark? It’s true! The cellular makeup of the bark allows for the movement of water and nutrients a tree need to live and seals in the moisture within the tree. Once the bark is removed (i.e., hand hewing) the exposed wood will begin to dry. It can take years to dry as the moisture in the center of the timber slowly makes its way to the surface. In addition, spruce logs have pockets of pitch (a sugary secretion) within them that slowly make its way to the surface in little drops. Or as Glenn likes to call it, golden tears

Once the timber frame structure was completed, it was time to construct the roof and ceiling. Made of western red cedar, Glenn used a highbred system of the ridge beam and wall plates to hold the rafters together creating a clean constructed roof within the Garden Pavilion. Repurposed steel from a 1970’s barn was used for the exterior roof and classic European galvanized round gutters finished off the look. If you are dying to know the difference between European and American style round gutters, just track Glenn down at the next event and he would be happy to tell you all about it.

The finishing touch of the Garden Pavilion is the rustic outdoor hanging light fixture that shines down from the center of the Garden Pavilion. Designed and constructed by Glenn himself, the center portion of the light is actually a galvanized planter pot from Glenn’s wife’s grandparents 1950’s post WWII house. Interested in making one for yourself? Check out the How to Build A Rustic Outdoor Hanging Light video by CLICKING HERE.

While we enjoy sharing all the technical details of the construction, it’s the true honest craftsmanship of the Garden Pavilion that contributes to The Gardens warm and natural environment making it the picture-perfect location for your wedding day.  Interested in seeing the Garden Pavilion in-person and discovering how it can help you create your Best Day Ever, SCHUDULE YOUR PERSONALIZED TOUR TODAY!

The Gardens’ Story…..what makes it so special

A one-of-a-kind story where passion and purpose align to create an amazing outdoor wedding venue.

Glenn’s vision is to create inviting natural spaces for incredible moments.

Born into a family with a strong appreciation for the natural environment, Glenn Switzer, the owner of The Gardens of Castle Rock, has been on a lifelong journey to align his passions with his purpose to create spaces where authentic craftsmanship and the natural environment are at the very center.

William “Grandpa” Switzer in the middle of one of the evergreen fields. Our best guess of the location of the photo is where the wedding reception tent is currently located.

Having spent most of his life on the property that is now The Gardens of Castle Rock, Glenn can recall the origins of almost every tree, the construction or destruction of each building and countless stories of how three generations of Switzers have helped people incorporate the natural environment into their lives. Look closely into the great Scotch pine that shades the entrance to the Lath House and you will spot remnants of Glenn’s first tree fort.

Close to a century ago, William Switzer, affectingly known as Grandpa Switzer, began working at a nursery business located on the property. After becoming the proprietor of the nursery, Grandpa Switzer wanted a name

that reflected the location of the nursery. He chose to name the business Castle Rock Nursery after the township it was located in and the nearby St. Peter sandstone formation that also bears its name. Spoiler alert…. Little remains of the Castle Rock sandstone formation today.

Glenn’s father, Gary Switzer, worked as a Landscape Architect for the National Park Service designing features at some of the nation’s most impressive natural parks in the west that can still been seen today.

Garry & Grandpa Switzer with a Scotch pine Christmas tree in front of the garden center building that burned in 1981. This is now the location of the Lath House.

When Glenn was a toddler, his family left Nevada to return to Minnesota to join Grandpa Switzer in the family business. Bringing his extensive landscape experience into the business called for an updated business name, thus Switzer’s Nursery & Landscaping was born.

Switzer’s Kids Nursery….trees, shrubs and occasional weeds for sale….underneath the Scotch pine, yes, that Scotch pine.

At a young age, Glenn joined his family working in the nursery weeding and watering plants. Self-described as a “pretty good kid”, Glenn can attest that he didn’t get in trouble much for misbehaving, but found himself in deep water many times for taking apart tools and simple machines. Glenn shared, “Although I wanted to understand how the tools and machines worked, what I really wanted to do was find a more efficient way for them to work. My dad and grandpa didn’t see it the same way.”
The close relationship Glenn shared with his father and grandfather, who had so much experience in designing and creating beautiful outdoor environments, created a deep appreciation for the natural world and the satisfaction of working with his hands.
Ever the adventurous entrepreneur. Glenn’s first dabble into business at the age of eight was the creation of Switzer’s Kids Nursery where he proudly filled his little red wagon full of .25 cent starter trees and proudly camped out under the great Scotch pine.

Over the 14 years of DJing, Glenn estimates he played music at over 600 weddings and events.

Through his teenage years, Glenn continued to work at the family’s business as he balanced school with his extracurricular activities (think…. tuba player, 4-H, Future Farmers of America and Boy Scouts). After high school, Glenn attended Inver Hills Community College in hopes of pursuing a political science degree all the while continuing to work at the family’s nursery and landscaping business. But Glenn’s path had other plans. While serving on the FFA State Officers Team at a FFA convention held at the University of Minnesota, Glenn stumbled upon an open house for the University’s Landscape Architecture Program. He was hooked. He promptly left Inver Hills Community College and enrolled at the University of Minnesota. At the U, Glenn discovered his passion as he studied landscape architecture and environmental design with a minor in art. Even taking him to China for three months to study garden design and architecture. Today, you’ll find him organizing his vacations and day trips around gardens or architectural tours to discover new techniques and concepts.

DJ Glenn….taking your song requests!

During the same time…..think early 20’s, Glenn began working as a DJ for Ultimate Entertainment. Having an appreciation for music and its ability to set the mood, this was a perfect fit for Glenn. During 14 years behind the turntables and hundreds of wedding receptions under his belt, Glenn developed a love for entertaining and making people happy. The opportunity arose to buy the company and Glenn jumped on it. Glenn shares “Music is so powerful. It has an amazing ability to enhance the party. It gets people out of their seats and on the dance floor. Some who haven’t danced in years jump up and say, ‘This is my song, I’ve got to dance!’ ”

Glenn spent his Monday-Friday workings 60 plus hours doing landscape design and construction at the family business and his weekends DJing. Sleep has never been a high priority for Glenn.

A ski bum at heart, Glenn is always willing to hike to the top of the mountain to enjoy the fresh powder usually accompanied by friends.

You may wonder……what does someone whose career revolves around working outdoors when the weather is mild do in the blustery Minnesota winters. Ever the outdoor lover, Glenn enjoys downhill skiing, even working as a ski instructor for 25 years. Come each February, you’ll find Glenn and his wife, Michelle, (also a former ski instructor…. that’s how they met) traveling out west to enjoy the fresh mountain powder.

Glenn has also had plenty of civic involvement (that’s the interest in political science) serving as the mayor of Dundas for the past 16 years and an advocate for the Mill Town State Trail.

If you’ve taken a tour at The Gardens, you know we ask the story behind your engagement. The snake river overlook of the Teton Range is where Glenn proposed to his wife Michelle. Of course, there is a story….you’ll have to ask Glenn or Michelle.

In 2006, Switzer’s Nursery transitioned out of retail sales to solely focus on landscape designs and construction, thus once again adding another word to the business name……Switzer’s Nursery & Landscape Design.  Glenn has accumulated over 30+ years of experience in landscape design and construction. While his portfolio is vast, his largest enjoyment in design has come from creating entertainment spaces with seamless indoors to outdoors transitions. He is the recipient of numerous landscaping and design awards with work featured in several Midwest magazines.

Glenn is proud of all of his civic involvement as mayor of Dundas, especially working on the Mill Towns State Trail.

In 2012, a friend of Glenn’s was looking for a place to get married outside. Half-jokingly, Glenn said, “You can get married here!” Glenn’s friend didn’t waste a second and took him up on the offer choosing to get married in the Lath House (before it was even the Lath House). The wedding went off without a hitch…. except the hitching of the bride and groom that is.

Intrigued by the possibility of branching into the wedding venue business, Glenn wrote a business plan with the projections of booking 5-10 weddings each year, in addition to his landscape design and construction work. Over the next four years, the number of weddings doubled each year.

Not only designing most of the buildings and elements at The Gardens, Glenn has played an integral part of their construction. The timbers on the front of the Gardens’ Suite were harvested onsite and chainsaw milled by Glenn.

With the opening of The Gardens of Castle Rock, Glenn’s passion and purpose came into alignment.
Glenn’s formal background in landscape design and construction, understanding the flow of parties as a DJ and his genuine love of creating spaces in which people can relax and celebrate, makes The Gardens a culmination of Glenn’s passions and purpose. “I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.” shares Glenn.

After all it is called The Gardens, but to Glenn it’s more than that. He has a strong commitment to natural landscapes and the environment, including the recent addition of a large wildflower pollinator garden.

Glenn’s vision for The Gardens is to create an amazing place where couples can gather with their friends and family in a safe and relaxed environment to share their values and love. That’s exactly why The Gardens is so open on everything. “It’s your wedding day it’s not about us. You are able to design a day that reflects who you are as a couple.” said Glenn

Glenn continues to do some landscape design and construction for long-term clients, but his focus is designing new features for The Gardens and handcrafting them to create the space for the experiences at The Gardens. Glenn’s true passion is working with his hands. For every building or garden feature Glenn designs, he incorporates traditional building techniques and best practices.  One of the first features of Glenn’s design was the natural stone fireplace. Demonstrated by the hand hewed timbers of the Garden Pavilion and the hand split stones of the Gardens Suite. There are no shortcuts and absolutely nothing faux at The Gardens. Everything reflects true honest craftsmanship. Go ahead, touch it, it’s 100% real!

As mentioned before, Glenn has been an integral part of all the buildings at The Gardens. Even down in the mud pouring footings of the Garden Pavilion restrooms.

Curious on how he does it all? You’re in luck as Glenn chronicles most of the projects he designs and constructs at The Gardens on his YouTube channel.

While couples and guests comment on the beauty of The Garden’s space, what really makes the space special is the people who gather in it. “Designing and constructing spaces that allow guests to be relaxed and comfortable is the ultimate goal of my work.” shares Glenn.

Passion and purpose…we love love, especially when it all comes together on a perfect wedding day.

It’s the people that makes The Gardens so special! Glenn loves seeing the spaces activated.

Hand-hewed timbers and natural stone reflect Glenn’s love of honest materials when designing a building.

Yeah, it’s really that good!

The Gardens Natural Stone Fireplace is a focal point of the venue and a terrific spot for guests to gather.

“The Gardens Of Castle Rock is a phenomenal wedding venue. They were an essential part of our miracle wedding – Planned at record speed between the time we first toured and met with them and the wedding day, about two weeks later #covidwedding. Through their gorgeous site and the assistance they gave us, we truly had a beautiful wedding. Glen’s skillful & artistic craftsmanship that has gone into much of the buildings and wooden structures gave it a unique, personal, and beautiful flair. We believe any couple would be fortunate to get married at The Gardens. We’re so grateful they’re a part of our story.” – Elise & Renato

Our wedding was magical and I can’t count how many people have complimented the venue! Even our vendors were blown away by its beauty and versatility. I especially loved being able to bring in what we wanted and not being confined to preferred caterers. The Gardens really made it possible to design everything about the day to suit our personalities! I feel so lucky we found this venue.” – Julia & Sam

“We were looking for a place that was rustic and rural, yet flexible so we could have a big Indian wedding. This was it, and we are so happy with our experience. Not only is the venue super flexible – we weren’t tied to their caterer or bar service, which was key for us – but they went totally above and beyond for us. Our wedding was so beautiful, everyone loved the venue, and we are so happy we chose The Gardens.” – Bidisha & Brian

Is Your Venue Photogenic? 7 Tips for Amazing Wedding Day Photos

To ensure the best wedding day photos, make sure your venue has these important things……

When searching for the perfect venue for your wedding day, don’t forget to consider the venue’s photogenic qualities! Making sure your venue has these 7 things, and a talented photographer of course, to ensure you have beautiful photos to remember your wedding day for decades to come.

Make sure your venue has plenty of large spaces to ensure there is enough room for your whole bridal crew! Photo Credit: Render Photography

Are there outdoor shaded spaces? When the sun is high and there is not a cloud in sight, it is hard not to squint. Without adequate shade, sunglasses may become a new wedding party accessory of choice or you may have a lot of squinty eyed photos. Shaded areas allow for the couple and wedding party to be photographed with full smiles and open eyes. Plus, when photos can take hours, standing in the hot sun can quickly lead to sunburn and dehydration….not a great wedding day look!

Is there space for large group photos? When it comes to photos with large groups, be sure there is enough room. Whether you have a big wedding party or want to do a big extended family photo, make sure your venue has plenty of large open areas to spread everyone out at a comfortable distance.

Are there intimate spaces? We shared the importance of large spaces for groups photos, but just as important is your venue’s ability to have intimate spaces that create a sense of privacy perfect for first looks and one-on-one romantic couple photos.

Are there props? We are not talking about funny hats and colorful boas, along those are great for  candid wedding reception photo booths. We’re talking about props in terms of landscape features throughout the venue, like pergolas, water features and mature trees. A photographer with the right eye can incorporate these props into one-of-a-kind photos.

Can you get some great sunset shots?  Does your venue have an unobstructed western view for those once-in-a-lifetime sunset photos?  Stealing away from the party with your new spouse and photographer to capture these sunset moments will make for amazing photos.

Love those end of the night sparkler photos!?! Check with your venue to be sure they are allowed. Photo by: Empiria Studios

What type of lighting is available once the sun sets?  Once the sun sets, does your venue have exterior lighting?  Not just lighting to illuminate high traffic areas and the parking lot, but lighting that outlines buildings and hangs in trees to create a romantic vibe.

Does your venue allow for sparklers? If you are interested in a gorgeous sparkler shot, double check with your venue representative to ensure they allow the use of sparklers on their property. Due to liability and fire danger,

not all venues allow for sparklers. Also, double check with your photographer that they will be there to capture the sparkler shot, as this can be one of the last activities of the evening.

Bonus Tip…..When touring a potential venue, ask the venue representative if the entire venue will be accessible to you for photos on your wedding day. Venues that are open to the public during your event, may limit the amount of time you can access spaces or may not allow you to take photos in certain areas at all.

The Grand Promenade

A uniquely designed space where elegance and the natural environment come together to create a beautiful outdoor wedding experience.

Couples looking to create an elegant wedding day style in a natural environment have the perfect option in The Grand Promenade ceremony site at The Gardens of Castle Rock.

Edged with lush green grass and mature trees, the 8,000 square foot space can accommodate 300 of your closest family and friends. Beginning at the stone staircase, the 75-foot long classically styled paver aisle leads directly to the 10-foot tall white wedding pergola. In designing the aisle, Glenn Switzer, owner and venue designer, used the age-old landscape design technique of forced perspective.

The Gardens believes in helping couples create a wedding day celebration that reflects who they are as a couple and when it comes to décor, the Grand Promenade is the perfect canvas. From draping the white wedding pergola to lining the aisle with lanterns, the possibilities are endless to create a truly unique event.
