A Fairytale Forest Wedding Where Romance Meets Enchantment

Have you ever dreamt of living within the pages of a fairytale—surrounded by magic, enchanted forests, and the promise of happily ever after? Then maybe it’s time to turn that dream into reality by creating an enchanted fairytale forest wedding! Full of thousands of captivating twinkling lights, lush greenery, and ethereal beauty — it’s perfect for couples where the atmosphere itself becomes part of the love story. A fairy-themed forest wedding isn’t just an event—it’s a moment of enchantment suspended in time.

To turn your real-life romance into the timelessness of a fairytale forest, consider integrating these five elements into your wedding day celebration:

Enchanted Natural Setting
Find a lush outdoor location—typically a forest, garden, or wooded grove—to serve as the foundation for your wedding day. Towering trees, whimsical structures, and organic textures create a natural, magical backdrop.

Whimsical Lighting
Soft, glowing illumination is key to the fairy-tale feel. Think of fairy lights strung through trees, structures outlined with lighting, and candles nestled in glass holders.

Romantic Florals & Greenery
Wildflowers, ivy, and greenery draped across arches, tables, and walkways help create a dreamy, overgrown aesthetic. Bouquets and décor tend to be loose, organic, and full of texture.

Fantasy-Inspired Decor
Elements like toadstools, crystals, antique mirrors, woodland creatures, and fairy figurines add charm and whimsy. Materials like lace, tulle, and natural wood enhance the ethereal vibe.

Storybook Details & Personal Touches
Handwritten scroll invitations, flower crowns, fun seating charts, and signature cocktails with mystical names all bring the fairy tale to life in ways that feel personal and imaginative.

A fairy-themed forest wedding offers a unique blend of romance, magic, and natural beauty that transforms a traditional celebration into an unforgettable experience.

2025 Wedding Trends: What We’re Seeing & Loving

In 2025, couples will be embracing a wedding style inspired by the timeless beauty of old-world charm. This trend merges the elegance of vintage European aesthetics with the casual, joyful ambiance of a garden party. It’s all about creating a dreamy, sophisticated atmosphere with subtle touches of fairytale romance and understated decadence.

The old-world style thrives in spaces that feature weathered stonework, vintage elements, and lush natural surroundings.

Imagine floral arrangements that look freshly picked from an 18th-century English garden, with cascading blooms and textured greenery. The color palette centers around soft pinks, lavender blush, and gentle peach tones, accented by an array of rich, natural greens.

Understanding that visuals speak louder than words, The Gardens partnered with top wedding professionals to showcase this enchanting style through photos. From lush floral installations to intricately detailed tablescapes, couples can see how old-world charm comes to life in every detail.

Wedding Reception Head Table Ideas: The Traditional Head Table

Picture this: You’ve just said “I do!” to the love of your life, and you’re walking back down the aisle while Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” plays. Your friends and family from near and far cheer as you take your first steps as a married couple, marching towards forever…and your reception! With vows exchanged and rings on fingers, it’s time to celebrate! There’s just one question…where are you going to sit? You and your spouse are, of course, the guests of honor, and your head table should reflect this accordingly. But both who you include at your nuptial table and how you choose to decorate it are entirely up to you. The main decision you must make when planning your head table is whether you want just you and your spouse at the head table (commonly called a sweetheart table), or if you would like to have your wedding party alongside you at a longer head table (called a traditional head table, which is what this blog focuses on). This choice is a personal preference, and should always reflect the desires of you and your partner – no one else!

Let’s talk décor for a moment. In many cases, because head tables only have people sitting on one side of the table(s), there is more room left to put decorations, whether that be florals, runners, candles, or all of the above! This provides an opportunity to jazz up your head table and set the stage for your wedding reception. Additionally, it’s a perfect opportunity to repurpose florals from your ceremony to add some extra pizzazz to your head table. No matter what design you have in mind for your head table, rest assured that it can be as unique as you are. Whether you go simple and classic or moody and maximalist, it should be a reflection of your style and the love that you and your partner share.

One bonus design tip – the general rule of thumb when deciding where to place your head table is this: you should be able to see all of your guests, and all of your guests should be able to see you. This is why the most common head table configuration sees you and your wedding party at a table along a wall, giving you a view of the whole room (and every guest!) and vice versa. Scroll below to see some fabulous head table inspo, and head over to our Pinterest to see more!

10 Helpful Planning Tips for an Eco-Friendly Wedding

Planning a wedding is a thrilling and joyous experience, but it can also be quite overwhelming, both for the couple and for the environment. Traditional weddings often generate a significant amount of waste and have a sizable carbon footprint, which can be tricky to navigate if you value being eco-conscious. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Having eco-friendly wedding is a fantastic way to celebrate your love while minimizing your impact on the planet.

In this blog post, we’ll share ten helpful planning tips to make your wedding day more sustainable, from choosing eco-friendly vendors to reducing waste and embracing nature. Here at The Gardens, being eco-conscious is very important to us. Scroll to the bottom to find out how we ensure that our venue is as green as can be!

Start with Invitations

First thing’s first – invitations! Your invitations to your guests – both save-the-dates and formal invitations – set the tone for your event. So, begin your eco-friendly wedding journey by selecting sustainable wedding invitations. Consider opting for digital invitations, or creating a wedding website where guests can see your invitation and RSVP all in one place. If you’re set on printed invitations, choose ones made with recycled paper and that have minimal or no foil/plastic coatings. You can even buy invitations that are embedded with seeds, so your guests can plant them after receiving them! This small change can significantly reduce paper waste and energy consumption.

When ordering your save the date cards & wedding invitations, consider using recycled or compostable paper……better yet, go 100% digital with a wedding webpage that offers an RSVP option. Photo Credit: Kelsey Bellows Photography

Choose an Eco-Conscious Venue

Selecting a mindful venue can have a big impact on the sustainability of your wedding. Look for venues that promote green practices, such as solar or wind-powered facilities, natural landscapes and native plants, or LED-certified buildings. Outdoor weddings in natural settings can also minimize the need for additional décor and lighting!

Sustainable Catering and Bar Service

Find a caterer who focuses on using locally sourced, organic, and seasonal ingredients, and ask about their policies and procedures to minimize food waste. Plan to have dishes, glassware, and utensils that are reusable, and consider opting for a plated or family-style dinner to further reduce single-use plastic waste. Another option is to offer a vegetarian or vegan menu option to further reduce your carbon footprint. For your bar service, find a company who works to ensure that all bottles, cans, and single-use plastic cups are properly recycled, and who does does not use plastic straws (The Gardens has a strict no plastic straws policy).

Did you know catering and bar waste is the biggest category of waste on a wedding day? Using sustainable plates, silverware & glassware with linen napkins is an excellent option to minimize waste……and class up the whole experience. Photo Credit: Jeannine Marie Photography

Eco-Friendly Décor

Opt for reusable or recyclable décor items like potted plants, candles, or fabric banners instead of disposable decorations. Consider shopping at second-hand or thrift stores for things such as glassware and candlesticks/votives, or check out wedding planning Facebook groups in your area – people frequently use them to pass along décor items after their own celebrations. Another option is décor rental – we can recommend several amazing vendors who can help bring your dream to life while also reducing waste. When looking at flowers, consider choosing a florist that works with seasonal and locally grown blooms, and then donate or compost them after the wedding.

Instead of purchasing a one-time paper aisle runner that you most likely with throw away, how about going for the boho look of rugs? Not only are they sustainable because you’ll use them again or donate them to a charity, but they just look so cool.

Guest table assignments on terracotta pots check all the boxes of being eco-friendly. The terracotta pots can be reused and the flowers are compostable. That’s smart thinking!

Wedding Attire

Consider renting your wedding attire or choosing pre-owned dresses and suits that can be passed along after your event. Alternatively, select outfits that can be worn again for other occasions, such as classic suits and cocktail dresses. If you do buy new attire, opt for designers who use sustainable and ethical practices.

Classic suits & bridesmaid dresses that can be re-worn is a thoughtful way to reduce waste on your wedding day. Don’t think you’ll ever wear that suit or dress again? Donate it to a local non-profit that accepts apparel. Photo Credit: Whitney Anderson Photography

Eco-Friendly Favors

Show your guests appreciation with eco-friendly wedding favors. Give them reusable items like bamboo utensils, cloth bags, or personalized seed packets that encourage them to embrace sustainability in their daily lives. Additionally, ensure that your favors contain only packaging that is recyclable to cut down on landfill waste.

A fun and sustainable favor for your guests….little succulents in a variety of cute little pots! Guests will remember your amazing wedding day each time they look at it on their kitchen windowsill.

Minimize Transportation Impact

Reduce transportation emissions by choosing a location that’s convenient for the majority of your guests. Encourage carpooling, provide shuttle services, or suggest using ridesharing apps for guests who need transportation. Additionally, choose a venue that allows you to have your ceremony and reception at the same location, eliminating the need for guests to travel between the ceremony site and reception venue.

Make transportation easy breezy for your guests. Arrange a shuttle to pick them up at the hotel and bring them back at the end of the night. Not only does it ensure everyone gets home safety, but you just reduced the carbon footprint. We can that a win-win!

Waste Reduction

Minimize waste by using reusable tableware and cutlery. If disposables are necessary, opt for compostable or biodegradable options and ensure they are clearly labeled recycling and composting stations to encourage guests to dispose of their waste responsibly.

Be Mindful With Favors for Your Wedding Party

It’s a common tradition to give the members of your wedding party one or more gifts when asking them to stand with you on your day. Let this be a reminder that less is more – one thoughtfully chosen, unique gift is a better choice than giving multiple gifts that are more generic. Additionally, when planning bachelor or bachelorette parties, be mindful when selecting decorations and outfits to ensure that all items can be reused and/or recycled.

Doing double duty! Providing a personalized Mason jar mug not only cuts down on the use of plastic cups, but for this couple, it acted as a way for guests to find their seat too. Photo Credit: Andrea Dobbs Photography

Donate and Share Leftovers

Coordinate with local food banks or shelters to donate any excess food from your wedding. Similarly, arrange for the proper recycling or donation of décor items, flowers, and other wedding elements to prevent unnecessary waste. Here at The Gardens, we will happily take your leftover flowers and greenery and add them to our onsite compost pile – just ask us for a bin!

If you are faced with leftovers, consider donating them to a local charity who provides meals (should be planned in advance of your wedding day) or talk with your caterer to find out if they allow couples to take leftovers home with them as long as they provide containers and coolers with ice to store the food in. Eco-Friendly at The Gardens

Being good stewards to the Earth is one of the most important values that we hold here at The Gardens. It’s our goal to minimize the carbon footprint that our venue has, and we keep that in mind in our day-to-day operations. The vast majority of the lights on our property are LEDs, which both last longer and use less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. When we build new structures around the venue, we use reclaimed and salvaged materials as much as possible, which not only keeps materials out of the landfill but also also helps us achieve that unique Gardens charm. We encourage the use of shuttle services, especially for events with a larger guest count. Additionally, because we host both the ceremony and reception on our property, it eliminates the need for transit between a ceremony site and reception location. We personally recycle aluminum cans, and work with local facilities to recycle glass and certain plastics. We also compost all organic waste produced on-site, from leaves to garden clippings. And as mentioned above, we’ll happily compost any leftover flowers or greenery after your event – one less thing for you to worry about! We also work hard to curate an environment that lets the beauty of nature shine, so you can celebrate your love in a genuine, authentic environment.

See all those logs in our log yard? While we do use some for firewood in The Gardens Natural Stone Fireplace, the majority is salvaged and turned into the impressive structures that make The Gardens so unique. Plus, the logs make some really terrific photo ops. Photo Credit: Jeannine Marie Photography.

Your wedding day is an opportunity to not only celebrate your love but also to make a positive impact on the environment. By keeping in mind these ten eco-friendly planning tips, you can significantly reduce your wedding’s carbon footprint and inspire your guests to adopt more sustainable practices in their own lives. Remember, every little effort counts, and an eco-friendly wedding can be just as beautiful and memorable as a traditional one, with the added bonus of knowing you’ve done your part to protect the planet.

The Grindbygg Inspired Covered Pergola: An Impressive & Unique Wedding Guest Experience

This hand-crafted, modern rustic pergola adds industrial charm and functionality to your outdoor wedding experience.

The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola is a picture perfect spot for a gorgeous October wedding day. Andrea Dobbs Photography

I bet the first question you’re asking yourself is, “What is a Grindbygg?” We’re glad you asked! Grindbygg is a traditional post construction style originating in Norway between the 1500’s through the 1800’s. The idea to build a Grindbygg inspired covered pergola came from a timber frame installation workshop Glenn attended at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN.

Glenn considers the structure to be inspired because instead of using the typical Grindbygg style of wood pegs he used large, galvanized lag bolts as the fasteners. Positioned near the entrance of the wedding reception patio, the four large cedar log posts were salvaged from a local tree removal company, while the rafters were salvaged from white pine logs and milled onsite. What’s most notable are the two large wall plates that Glenn was able to salvage from a 60-year-old tree his grandfather had planted. The repurposing of trees into structures has always been important to Glenn and to the legacy of The Gardens.

The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola is a beautiful structure and one of ten wood structures, like the Garden Pavilion, located throughout the venue.

While the material and the building process of the Grindbygg inspired pergola is interesting, it’s functionality as a one stop shop for couples to display their guestbook and gifts/cards that’s important. Not to mention, its covered roof provides protection from the sun’s rays and sometimes even a few stray raindrops for the items displayed underneath on a Mid-Height Table.

And let’s not forget the most important fact! The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola makes an amazing backdrop for photos!

The ambient lighting of The Garden’s reception space is a definite experience. From the glow of the lighting on of the Grindbygg inspired covered pergola and Garden Pavilion, to the natural light of a crackling fire, your reception space will feel warm and inviting.

Wedding Reception Table Ideas: The Sweetheart Table

Make your wedding day all about YOU by integrating the sweetheart wedding reception table into your intimate outdoor wedding setting.

It’s no secret that your wedding day is all about you and your sweetie. Each aspect of your wedding day should reflect your style, interests, and personality! Are you looking for an alternative to a traditional head table or simply want to snuggle in with your new Mr. or Mrs.? Enter the Sweetheart Wedding Reception Table.

“Holly and Anton, party of two!” Although they chose to sit at a sweetheart table “alone”, H&A still arranged their bridal party near by to distinguish them as guests of honor. Photo Credit: Studio KH

What is a Sweetheart Table?

Sweetheart tables are meant for, well, sweethearts! By Google’s definition, they are smaller tables that solely seat the newlyweds – but that doesn’t mean that’s the only way to incorporate the sweetheart table. Not only can sweetheart tables be on the larger side, they can also be used within the traditional head table line-up for extra leg room and comfort.

A longer sweetheart table is extra dramatic and may provide extra leg room AND wedding gown room (for those extra poofy ball gowns…).

Why Choose a Sweetheart Table?

The sweetheart table makes a cute AND functional head table! Cute on it’s own, but also functional in a traditional head table line up (what newlywed wants to be separated by table legs?). Here are a few more reasons…

You Get a Chance to Be Alone

We know you love your bridal party. You wouldn’t have picked them if you hadn’t, right? It’s okay to hang out with just your new spouse for supper time. Plus, this gives you a chance to wind down after a whirlwind of emotion, pictures, and lots of talking to long, lost relatives. Step away from the chaos for a moment and chat with your best friend!

Your Bridal Party can sit by their Plus-Ones or Family

Have you ever been sent to sit with your date’s Uncle Jack because they were at the head table? Then you probably know where we’re going with this. Let’s just say Uncle Jack’s extensive collection of dad jokes are amusing… but may get tiresome after some time. Also, your bridal party may be looking to take a breather from being in the spotlight. There’s no rule book when it comes to head table arrangements (at least… not here at The Garden’s of Castle Rock!), so there is nothing saying you can’t arrange their seating near by.

Like a cherry on top of a head table sundae, this head table arrangement features the Sweetheart Table at the top and two Cedar Banquet Tables connected at the corners. A perfect layout for larger bridal parties or parties with plus-ones!

They’re Photogenic!

Your photographer is going to want a great view of your reactions to funny, loving, or maybe embarrassing stories told by your family and friends. When displayed on its own, the sweetheart table provides a great view of you for everyone!

You Can Splurge or Get Creative on a Budget!

Splurging on distinguished floral arrangements, notable head table décor, or fancy seating can be super fun with a sweetheart table! Opt for special rental items, such as formal place settings or fancy chairs for just the two of you instead of your entire bridal party.

Consider using the floral display from your ceremony to adorn your sweetheart table! As you can see here, a mountain of florals created a lavish centerpiece. Photo Credit: Sophisticated Grace Photography

How Do I Decorate a Sweetheart Table?

If we had a nickel for every couple that couldn’t enjoy their reception because their head table wasn’t decorated perfectly… Spoiler alert: We have yet to collect a nickel for this… So, enjoy the process! Here are some ideas to get you started…

1) Stick with your theme.

2) Pick Some Cozy Seating

Choosing a sweetheart table that is wide enough to host your favorite decorative seating is a must! Here at The Gardens, our handcrafted cedar sweetheart tables are 5 ft. long. Photo Credit: Erin Rae Photography

3) Choose a Linen, Runner, or Garland. (Or don’t!)

Lace and a delicate floral display created the perfect garden wedding scene indoors. Hello, sentimental “something borrowed” on display!

4) Create Your Centerpiece

Minimalist and moody, or maximalist and dramatic? Creating your centerpiece doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes less equals more, and sometimes more equals… WOWZA! Photo Credit: Perry James Photography

5) Add Some Twinkle

Pillar…votive…tea light…battery operated. Candles help make your tablescape magical. Otherwise, consider LED twinkle lights. Photo Credit: Kimberly Williams Photography

6) Consider an Interesting Backdrop

A backdrop of varying lumber shapes and colors perfectly complimented this rustic refined reception theme. Other backdrop ideas to consider include lights, draping, a floral installation, or the natural garden scene right outside of the reception tent.

7) Set The Table

Fancy place settings can get expensive or difficult to provide for a large crowd; however, providing special plates, utensils, napkins for just you and your sweetie (remember – your table settings will be the most documented) creates an extra special space for you to enjoy. Photo Credit: Taryn Christine Photography

8) Add Some Signs

You’re officially Mr. and Mrs. – or Mr. and Mr. – or Mrs. and Mrs.! Why not display your official title?

9) Tell Your Story!

Little hidden gems throughout your reception space illustrate your story, add character, and keep guests intrigued.

10) Enjoy YOUR Day!!

Classic Elegant Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at The Gardens

Elevate the grand entrance of the bride with ceremony gate & doors for the awed admiration of the wedding guests.

Crafted in classic traditional design, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors have the ability to make time stand still. In those sweet moments as the bride readies herself behind the door to the moment of the big reveal when the doors slowly open, everyone is suspended in time.

Glenn Switzer, venue owner & designer, built his first pergola in the late 1980’s while working as a landscape designer. As a frequent traveler, Glenn explored gardens and garden structures throughout the world. To bring what he admired from aboard, Glenn laid out the former landscape nursery, now The Gardens, on the European concept of a formal garden, grid pattern with multiple walkways and access points. He also designed and built a large formal white pergola years before The Gardens was a wedding venue. Maybe it was foreshadowing or even luck, but the white garden pergola was placed in the perfect location for the future Grand Promenade ceremony spot. When it came time to design the Grand Promenade, the location of the white pergola worked perfectly as a 75’ aisle was added down the center.

But how did the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors come to be? It all started with a bride inquiring if The Gardens had any doors that could be place at the entrance of the Grand Promenade for her to have a big reveal moment with her fiancé. In one of those instances that drives Glenn’s wife crazy, Glenn replied, “We don’t have any, but we could build some!” Since the bride was having her ceremony on the Grand Promenade, the design of the gate and doors would mimic the details of the white garden pergola. However, engineering how the posts would stand-up, as well as be mobile, took a bit more pre-planning. Interested in learning how it all came together? Check out our Beautiful Wedding Ceremony Cedar Gate & Doors for The Grand Promenade YouTube video.

One of the detail Glenn really appreciates in the construction of the gate and doors is the use of the old-world style of pounding nails called clinching. It is where a nail is driven all the way through the board and support boards, bent over and driven into the wood to create a tight bond.

A fair amount of time was spent on the doors to ensure they were equal in size and shape, as well as opened evenly. To create a classic romantic look, scalloped cuts were made on the side pieces making a wide enough space for the ushers to stand on either side to open the doors. The 6-foot doors also have a rounded cascading top to ensure even the tallest bride can be completely hidden.

While the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors were designed for the Grand Promenade, it has also been used at the Lath House ceremony location. A rainstorm the morning of a wedding planned on the Grand Promenade resulted in the grass being too wet. So the amazing and flexible staff moved the ceremony gate & door to the entrance of the Lath House. Low and behold, it was an amazing fit there too! That’s what is so inspiring about The Gardens…. its chameleon-like nature that allows for your wedding style to shine through.

Designed in the same style as the Grand Promenade’s pergola, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a classic and elegant look.

Steady and ready. The bride accompanied by her dad prepare for the sweetest walk together down the aisle.

You can choose to place the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at the entrance to the Lath House or the Grand Promenade.

The ceremony concludes and the couple stroll hand in hand down the aisle and back through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors.

The wedding party assembled in front of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors in an effort to allow the bride to stay hidden until just the right moment.

While the guests file into the Grand Promenade, they too can enjoy walking through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors. But remember, it’s doors open for everyone except the bride.

Everyone’s attention is right where it should be…..the beautiful bride.

The flower girl and ring bearer as through. Now is the time for the doors to be closed for the bride’s big entrance.

Designed and built by venue owner & designer, Glenn Switzer, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors are both fully-functional and beautiful.

Spring, summer or fall, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors can elevate your ceremony to the next level.

A couple quick fluffs and adjustments (thanks dad!) and it’s show time!

The scalloped side pieces of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors are wide enough for ushers to stand when they open the doors.

The Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a perfect frame for the bride and groom.

Last words of advice are exchanged between bride and her dad as the ceremony gate and doors are slowly opened.

Worried that your head might show while standing behind the doors prior to the big reveal? No worries, the 6 foot doors have a rounded cascading top to ensure even the tallest bride can be completely hidden.

Guests eagerly await the opening of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors to reveal the gorgeous bride.

It’s okay to get a little teary eyed at seeing the bride walk down the aisle. If you want to blame it on allergies, we won’t tell.

The new Mr. & Mrs. steal one of many kisses to come under the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors.

It’s your time to shine! I mean you are getting married and all!

When it comes to who will walk you down the aisle, the choice is yours! Some brides have dad, some mom, some both and some go it alone. It’s all about choosing what means the most to you.

You can almost feel the anticipation of the bride as she prepares to walk through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors and into a brand new chapter of her life.

The Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a welcoming vibe into the Lath House at The Gardens.
