10 Helpful Planning Tips for an Eco-Friendly Wedding

Planning a wedding is a thrilling and joyous experience, but it can also be quite overwhelming, both for the couple and for the environment. Traditional weddings often generate a significant amount of waste and have a sizable carbon footprint, which can be tricky to navigate if you value being eco-conscious. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Having eco-friendly wedding is a fantastic way to celebrate your love while minimizing your impact on the planet.

In this blog post, we’ll share ten helpful planning tips to make your wedding day more sustainable, from choosing eco-friendly vendors to reducing waste and embracing nature. Here at The Gardens, being eco-conscious is very important to us. Scroll to the bottom to find out how we ensure that our venue is as green as can be!

 

Start with Invitations

First thing’s first – invitations! Your invitations to your guests – both save-the-dates and formal invitations – set the tone for your event. So, begin your eco-friendly wedding journey by selecting sustainable wedding invitations. Consider opting for digital invitations, or creating a wedding website where guests can see your invitation and RSVP all in one place. If you’re set on printed invitations, choose ones made with recycled paper and that have minimal or no foil/plastic coatings. You can even buy invitations that are embedded with seeds, so your guests can plant them after receiving them! This small change can significantly reduce paper waste and energy consumption.

Choose an Eco-Conscious Venue

Selecting a mindful venue can have a big impact on the sustainability of your wedding. Look for venues that promote green practices, such as solar or wind-powered facilities, natural landscapes and native plants, or LED-certified buildings. Outdoor weddings in natural settings can also minimize the need for additional décor and lighting!

Sustainable Catering and Bar Service

Find a caterer who focuses on using locally sourced, organic, and seasonal ingredients, and ask about their policies and procedures to minimize food waste. Plan to have dishes, glassware, and utensils that are reusable, and consider opting for a plated or family-style dinner to further reduce single-use plastic waste. Another option is to offer a vegetarian or vegan menu option to further reduce your carbon footprint. For your bar service, find a company who works to ensure that all bottles, cans, and single-use plastic cups are properly recycled, and who does does not use plastic straws (The Gardens has a strict no plastic straws policy).

Did you know catering and bar waste is the biggest category of waste on a wedding day? Using sustainable plates, silverware & glassware with linen napkins is an excellent option to minimize waste……and class up the whole experience. Photo Credit: Jeannine Marie Photography

 

Eco-Friendly Décor

Opt for reusable or recyclable décor items like potted plants, candles, or fabric banners instead of disposable decorations. Consider shopping at second-hand or thrift stores for things such as glassware and candlesticks/votives, or check out wedding planning Facebook groups in your area – people frequently use them to pass along décor items after their own celebrations. Another option is décor rental – we can recommend several amazing vendors who can help bring your dream to life while also reducing waste. When looking at flowers, consider choosing a florist that works with seasonal and locally grown blooms, and then donate or compost them after the wedding.

Instead of purchasing a one-time paper aisle runner that you most likely with throw away, how about going for the boho look of rugs? Not only are they sustainable because you’ll use them again or donate them to a charity, but they just look so cool.

 

Guest table assignments on terracotta pots check all the boxes of being eco-friendly. The terracotta pots can be reused and the flowers are compostable. That’s smart thinking!

Wedding Attire

Consider renting your wedding attire or choosing pre-owned dresses and suits that can be passed along after your event. Alternatively, select outfits that can be worn again for other occasions, such as classic suits and cocktail dresses. If you do buy new attire, opt for designers who use sustainable and ethical practices.

Eco-Friendly Favors

Show your guests appreciation with eco-friendly wedding favors. Give them reusable items like bamboo utensils, cloth bags, or personalized seed packets that encourage them to embrace sustainability in their daily lives. Additionally, ensure that your favors contain only packaging that is recyclable to cut down on landfill waste.

A fun and sustainable favor for your guests….little succulents in a variety of cute little pots! Guests will remember your amazing wedding day each time they look at it on their kitchen windowsill.

 

Minimize Transportation Impact

Reduce transportation emissions by choosing a location that’s convenient for the majority of your guests. Encourage carpooling, provide shuttle services, or suggest using ridesharing apps for guests who need transportation. Additionally, choose a venue that allows you to have your ceremony and reception at the same location, eliminating the need for guests to travel between the ceremony site and reception venue.

Make transportation easy breezy for your guests. Arrange a shuttle to pick them up at the hotel and bring them back at the end of the night. Not only does it ensure everyone gets home safety, but you just reduced the carbon footprint. We can that a win-win!

 

Waste Reduction

Minimize waste by using reusable tableware and cutlery. If disposables are necessary, opt for compostable or biodegradable options and ensure they are clearly labeled recycling and composting stations to encourage guests to dispose of their waste responsibly.

Be Mindful With Favors for Your Wedding Party

It’s a common tradition to give the members of your wedding party one or more gifts when asking them to stand with you on your day. Let this be a reminder that less is more – one thoughtfully chosen, unique gift is a better choice than giving multiple gifts that are more generic. Additionally, when planning bachelor or bachelorette parties, be mindful when selecting decorations and outfits to ensure that all items can be reused and/or recycled.

Donate and Share Leftovers

Coordinate with local food banks or shelters to donate any excess food from your wedding. Similarly, arrange for the proper recycling or donation of décor items, flowers, and other wedding elements to prevent unnecessary waste. Here at The Gardens, we will happily take your leftover flowers and greenery and add them to our onsite compost pile – just ask us for a bin!

If you are faced with leftovers, consider donating them to a local charity who provides meals (should be planned in advance of your wedding day) or talk with your caterer to find out if they allow couples to take leftovers home with them as long as they provide containers and coolers with ice to store the food in. Eco-Friendly at The Gardens

Being good stewards to the Earth is one of the most important values that we hold here at The Gardens. It’s our goal to minimize the carbon footprint that our venue has, and we keep that in mind in our day-to-day operations. The vast majority of the lights on our property are LEDs, which both last longer and use less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. When we build new structures around the venue, we use reclaimed and salvaged materials as much as possible, which not only keeps materials out of the landfill but also also helps us achieve that unique Gardens charm. We encourage the use of shuttle services, especially for events with a larger guest count. Additionally, because we host both the ceremony and reception on our property, it eliminates the need for transit between a ceremony site and reception location. We personally recycle aluminum cans, and work with local facilities to recycle glass and certain plastics. We also compost all organic waste produced on-site, from leaves to garden clippings. And as mentioned above, we’ll happily compost any leftover flowers or greenery after your event – one less thing for you to worry about! We also work hard to curate an environment that lets the beauty of nature shine, so you can celebrate your love in a genuine, authentic environment.

While we do use some for firewood in The Gardens Natural Stone Fireplace, the majority is salvaged and turned into the impressive structures that make The Gardens so unique. When we imagine the perfect wedding day, we often picture clear skies, golden sunsets, and a gentle breeze carrying the sweet scent of flowers. But what if I told you that some of the most enchanting, unforgettable, and emotionally charged weddings have taken place under a different kind of weather? Picture this: raindrops falling from the sky, the soft pitter-patter on umbrellas, the gleam of wet cobblestones underfoot, and a couple standing side by side, declaring their love in the midst of a gentle rain shower.

This is the story of a wedding day where the heavens opened up and showered the couple with blessings in the form of rain. It’s a tale of love, commitment, and the sheer magic of turning an unexpected twist of weather into an unforgettable celebration of unity and joy. Says bride TaKeyah, “We had an amazing wedding day experience at The Gardens!  We chose The Gardens because of the beautiful outdoor spaces.  When it was forecasted for rain that day, we were nervous our whole wedding vision was ruined.  The Gardens’ staff were not intimidated by the rain at all!  They pivoted our ceremony from the Lath House to the Wedding Reception Tent without any hesitation; flowers, decorations and all.  The ceremony was beyond beautiful and we wouldn’t change a single thing about the day!  When the rain cleared, it turned into a beautiful evening and we were still able to enjoy The Gardens’ grounds with our family and friends.”

Real Wedding Spotlight: A timeless summer garden wedding full of once-in-a-lifetime moments.

There’s something special about summer weddings. The days are long, the nights are warm, and the whole world seems steeped in the nostalgia of days gone by. August 19th, 2022 was no different – a beautiful backdrop for a timeless garden wedding. The day, as with many summer weddings, started off cloudy, with a chance of rain. But the clouds softened the sunlight to provide the perfecting lighting for pictures, as evidenced by a shot of the bride appearing almost angelic as she got ready in The Gardens Suite. Loved ones gathered from near and far as the wedding party got ready to surround Andre and Cassandra with love.

Meanwhile, the wedding reception tent was busy being transformed into the reception space that dreams are made of. Soft pink linens paired perfectly with pastel greenery to create a charming, intimate space under the twinkle of café lights. Following fun photoshoots with the couple and their party, it was time for the ceremony to commence. The Lath House stood ready and waiting, the alter adorned with pink and white flowers to match. As the party filed down the aisle through soft white curtains, there was only one person left to arrive – the bride. Cassandra looked dazzling in her dress and stunning lace veil as she made her way down the aisle to Andre.

Following a heartfelt ceremony, it was time to celebrate! As guests settled under the wedding reception tent, the wedding party made fabulous grand entrances into the reception, setting the mood for the rest of the night. As eating, drinking, and dancing ensued, the couple sunk away for a quick golden hour photoshoot before returning to take to the dance floor. The Grindbygg Inspired Covered Pergola: An Impressive & Unique Wedding Guest Experience

This hand-crafted, modern rustic pergola adds industrial charm and functionality to your outdoor wedding experience.

I bet the first question you’re asking yourself is, “What is a Grindbygg?” We’re glad you asked! Grindbygg is a traditional post construction style originating in Norway between the 1500’s through the 1800’s. The idea to build a Grindbygg inspired covered pergola came from a timber frame installation workshop Glenn attended at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN.

Glenn considers the structure to be inspired because instead of using the typical Grindbygg style of wood pegs he used large, galvanized lag bolts as the fasteners. Positioned near the entrance of the wedding reception patio, the four large cedar log posts were salvaged from a local tree removal company, while the rafters were salvaged from white pine logs and milled onsite. What’s most notable are the two large wall plates that Glenn was able to salvage from a 60-year-old tree his grandfather had planted. The repurposing of trees into structures has always been important to Glenn and to the legacy of The Gardens.

The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola is a beautiful structure and one of ten wood structures, like the Garden Pavilion, located throughout the venue.

While the material and the building process of the Grindbygg inspired pergola is interesting, it’s functionality as a one stop shop for couples to display their guestbook and gifts/cards that’s important. Not to mention, its covered roof provides protection from the sun’s rays and sometimes even a few stray raindrops for the items displayed underneath on a Mid-Height Table.

And let’s not forget the most important fact! The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola makes an amazing backdrop for photos!

Create a Wedding Reception Table Layout: 200-300 Guests

Arranging Your Reception Table Design to Suit Your Large Guest Count

You’ve just jumped into planning a wedding! Que the wedding invitation designs, table décor, Pinterest boards, wedding dress decisions, and table layout designs! That’s right. Here at The Gardens of Castle Rock, you get to design your own tent layout for your large guest count.

While this may seem like a daunting task, we are here to help! Before you jump into your tent layout design for 200-300 guests, we highly recommend you check out our previous blog which covered assigned versus open seating plans, as well as how to use our tent layout tool. It’s important that you know this information before beginning to design your tent layout for a larger wedding. Click here to check out this blog.

If you’ve already been there and done that…….Welcome! We’re excited to hear that you have so many loved ones ready to party the night away in the Wedding Reception Tent.

Designing a tent layout for a large wedding guest count means there are some important factors to consider to help with crowd control, but also in complimenting your unique wedding palette and theme. Let’s chat about these things first, and then we will share some tent layouts that have worked well.

Consider the Flow of Traffic for Your Wedding Guests

First things first, we need to move your guests from Point A to Point B. Consider this:

1) Start with an aisle! That’s right… You need to plan for two aisles to walk on your wedding day! Think of the aisle in your reception area as a main highway. Make sure you have one clear “highway” aisle that will take your guests effortlessly through the tent with “side streets” that lead them to their table.

2) Make an entrance. Tables right in front of the entrance of the tent will stop guests before they even enter. Make sure you leave at least a 10′ x 10′ area as guests enter if possible. If this isn’t possible (usually for guest counts over 275), make sure there is an aisle to keep guests moving through the tent.

3) Think: Movement. It may seem tempting to connect all of the cedar banquet tables in a long line to save space, but now guests will need to walk a long distance before being able to “cut through” to the next row or aisle. We suggest connecting a maximum of 2 or 3 cedar banquet tables then leave a space wide enough for someone to pass through.

4) Mix and match. Utilize both the Garden’s Cedar Banquet Tables and Round Reception Tables. Using all round reception tables may take up too much room for a guest count of 250+. Cedar Banquet Tables tend to take up less room, so place as many as you can before compensating with round tables.

5) Assign Seating. Assigned seating or assigned tables helps maximize on reception space. Open seating for your reception means you’ll need to plan for extra tables (see our previous blog on open versus assigned seating). Assigned seating or tables means less tables taking up valuable walking space!

Will My Reception Tables Need to be Broken Down?

At The Gardens of Castle Rock, it is more likely that tables will need to be removed from the dance area when there is a reception guest count of 230+ guests. While our table layout tool has a suggested dance area to try to avoid, we often remove a couple tables in this area to make more room for your Uncle Bob and Aunt Betty to bust a move later. For this reason, here are some things to think about:

1) Only round reception tables can be placed in the dance area as they are easy to fold up and roll out.

2) If a guest will be assigned to a table that will be broken down later in the evening, make sure they are aware that it will be disappearing. A simple sign on the table helps! On that note…

Sometimes surprises are fun, and sometimes they aren’t. Guests love a heads up if their table will be broken down.

3) Guests sitting at tables that will be broken down need to have ample time to eat. If they are the last to receive their food, they may not have time to really enjoy their meal. Consider this while assigning table numbers.

Do I Have Enough Space For Any Extras Such as Risers or a Photo Booth?

Again, this has everything to do with how many guests you are planning for, what tables you would like to use, and whether you elect for assigned or open seating. As we discussed in our previous blog, place these items in the order of importance. If the photo booth can only be placed in the reception tent, then place this in the tent first before placing tables.

If it’s really important to you that your head table is lofted on the risers, make sure you plan the risers in first before placing any other tables. You may find that there isn’t enough space for your entire wedding party to be on risers. Consider placing just you, your sweetie and a sweetheart table on the risers with your wedding party on either side.

We, of course, are here to help with suggestions! We want your reception space to be filled with your loved ones AND your favorite wedding reception must haves.

Is There Room for Dinner and Dancing in The Reception Tent?

Yes and yes! There is even space for a band if necessary! Please note that if you have a guest count of 250+ guests, your dance area and DJ and/or Band will need to be set up at the far side of the tent (East Side by the cedar wood wall).

Consider the Season

We are invested in keeping your guests cool during the hotter months and warmer during the colder months. Generally speaking, you should plan for the tent sides to be on during mid-May, the end of September, and all of October.

When the tent sides are on, our heat is also on! Talk to your Wedding Set-Up Lead at The Gardens of Castle Rock to avoid placing tables in front of where these heat sources will be. We know your guests’ comfort is a priority and we don’t want anyone to get too toasty.

Open Seating or Assigned Seating? Traditional Head Table or King’s Table? The Choice is Yours!

Creating a comfortable, relaxing, and engaging guest experience for your wedding guests is a top priority for your wedding day. A key factor to your overall wedding reception aesthetic is the table layout design and seating arrangements. It’s an exciting and, we’ll admit, challenging part of the planning process, but absolutely necessary when determining the overall feel of the space.

At The Gardens of Castle Rock, you get to design your own reception tent layout with our tent layout tool. If you are one of our current couples, you’ve come to the right place for extra guidance. We hope this blog serves as a helpful tool as you design the space of your dreams! If you’re just here to learn more about creating a wedding reception seating design – welcome! We are a southern Minnesota wedding venue just north of Northfield, MN that loves to share insights on wedding planning and hosting an outdoor wedding!

We’re going to provide you with insight to reception assigned or open seating, break down the process of designing your unique Gardens Tent Layout with the Tent Layout Tool, and then provide some examples of seating charts for 100 to 200 guests. Phew! This blog is going to be fun, so let’s jump in!

Should I have Assigned or Open Seating at My Wedding Reception?

First, before you tackle your reception table layout, you need to decide between assigned seating or open seating. This question may seem minor, but it makes a big difference in design and guest experience! Let’s talk pros and considerations for each seating option…

Should we have Assigned Seating or Tables for our wedding reception?

Pros: Assigned seating helps a reception feel more organized and intentional. Guests will feel more at ease because they don’t have to rush to the reception area to “claim” seating for their family. Even if you have under 100 guests attending, a seating chart optimizes your space and fills every seat.

Something to consider: Creating a seating chart can be hard work and you’re not going to make 100% of your guests happy with your seating choices for them. Make sure you employ the help of your day-of coordinator and parents when deciding who should sit near who and whether you should designate assigned chairs or just assigned tables.

Should we have Open Seating for our wedding reception?

Pros: Open seating benefits you because, let’s face it, seating charts can get complicated and expensive. It can also prevent guests from getting offended when you place them next to your cousin’s political plus one. Open seating gives your guests an opportunity to sit next to who they really want to sit by and saves you the headache of trying to figure out just who that is.

Something to consider: Make sure you provide extra tables and chairs so that your guests can find seats together. Remember, a group of 2 people won’t always go fill the 2 empty spots at a table with strangers. Chances are, they’ll go to a completely open table. We suggest at least one extra table for every 100 guests (or 4-6 extra place settings per 100 guests).

You will need extra seating for an open seating plan – which means there will be a couple spots that are empty. Make sure to factor in extra silverware and glassware when talking with your caterer or bar service!

Design Your Reception Tent Layout

Now that you’ve thought about assigned or open seating, it’s arts and crafts date night time! Grab your tent layout, cut out some tables, and let’s get started.

Follow this order when deciding the placement of tables:

1) Place party add-on tables such as photo booths, memory tables, and dessert tables. We recommend using The Gardens Mid-Height tables for your special add-ons so that the reception tables can be used for your guests.

2) Decide on your table preference. At The Gardens of Castle Rock, you can choose from our 8′ hand-crafted cedar banquet tables or 60″ round tables. The cedar banquet tables bring a unique and rustic elegance to the table (see what we did there?) while the round reception tables are considered more traditional and can add color to your reception space (as a note, round tables require a linen). Feel free to mix and match, too! If you find that you’ve used all 20 of our 8′ cedar banquets, a couple round tables up by the head table are perfect for your parents, grandparents or special guests.

3) Calculate the number of tables needed. It’s time to get out the ol’ calculator and do some math. For example, let’s say you have chosen reserved tables for 144 guests, you will need 18 tables. If you have chosen open seating, we would suggest 20 tables.

5) Give VIPs special treatment. Your parents, grandparents or special friends deserve a front row seat for dinner service, wedding toasts and first dances. Make sure to place their tables nearby your head table.

6) Arrange the remaining tables. It’s time to make your reception space unique to you! We can’t wait to see what you have designed. Need some inspiration? We thought you’d never ask…

What If It Rains On My Wedding Day? 7 Helpful Insights

The Gardens of Castle Rock Embraces the Rain and We’re Here to Help on Your Wedding Day.

As an outdoor wedding venue in Minnesota, The Gardens of Castle Rock is no stranger to precipitation. We have witnessed first hand the fresh smell of the rain, the ambient lighting it provides, the memories it creates… and rainbows! It’s hard to take our word for it, especially when rain is not on your wish list…..but, we totally get it! That’s why we’re here to talk to you about how The Gardens handles rain on your wedding day, so your best day ever really is the Best. Day. Ever.

So, first things first, close that weather app and put the phone down. Refreshing the weather channel like a magic 8 ball won’t change the outcome nor will it help calm your nerves. It’s okay to mourn a bit if you see some sprinkles in your future, but now it’s time to ask yourself this very important question: “Will rain stop you from marrying the love of your life?” We didn’t think so. The second most important question: “Will you melt if rain hits you like the Wicked Witch of the West?”  We didn’t think so either.  Now let’s talk about how The Gardens has you covered!

We’re On Your Team!

Cheers! This epic photo by Tessa June Photography is a perfect example of embracing the day! A little rain doesn’t ruin a wedding day – it adds to the memories!

What does a rainy day wedding ceremony look like here at The Gardens? Great question. Let’s dive into that…

  1. The Gardens Set-Up Lead continuously communicates with your professional Day of Coordinator to ensure all of your wishes for the day are implemented including the answer to this question: Outside or Under the Tent?
  2. If you would like to stick to your outdoor wedding ceremony site, The Gardens staff will be there with towels and leaf blowers to dry off the seating right before the start of the ceremony.
  3. If you would like to move your ceremony to the Wedding Reception Tent, here are day-of adjustments that The Gardens staff can do to help (if space allows): Set-up an arbor in the Wedding Reception Tent, slightly adjust tables to create an aisle if need be, and set-up a front row of chairs for immediate family near the arbor. It’s important to note that your tables and chairs will already be set for your reception and can not be moved out of the tent for the ceremony. Guests are welcome to sit at their tables during the ceremony.

Our reception tent stays up all season long and is our Plan B. With removable tent sides, we have the ability to strategically enclose certain sections of the tent to protect guests from rain during the summer. (We don’t automatically enclose the entire tent otherwise it turns into a true greenhouse! …See what we did there?) When temperatures drop sometime in the fall, the tent sides are put on and stay on so we can heat the tent.  Add in a fully paved floor to keep your guests nice shoes out of the mud, it’s a great option if you choose to get married under the canopy of the tent!

Ground Cover

Speaking of pavers… The Gardens of Castle Rock has almost 15,000 square feet of pavers to avoid mud on a rainy day; Unless, of course, you’re young at heart enough to seek out the mud. You shouldn’t have to give up your favorite pair of heels for rain boots (unless you love that idea), and our walk ways will give you plenty of opportunity to keep your shoes mud free. The pavers stretch from both dressing rooms, throughout the reception patio area, and under our 40’x100′ Reception Tent. The Lath House ceremony location also has pavers throughout the whole space.

Flexible in Ceremony Schedule

The first concept to remember is that a forecast of rain doesn’t mean 24 hours of rain. If you want to wait on starting the ceremony for 20 minutes to see if the rain passes by, we’re game! You make the decision on your ceremony time. Your Gardens Set-Up Lead will be working with your Day of Coordinator to work out a new ceremony time, if necessary, and any day-of location changes (if you decide to go from outside to under the tent) so that you can sit back and relax.

There are several outdoor covered areas throughout The Gardens of Castle Rock for you to do a first look, snuggle in with your sweetie, or cheery wildly with your bridal party. You chose an outdoor wedding venue for a reason… Let’s get you outside for some truly remarkable photos to cherish for a lifetime.

Indoor Arbor

We know a lot of consideration goes into your arbor decorations for your wedding ceremony… which is why we have an arbor exclusively for weddings in the Wedding Reception Tent.

In the case of your wedding ceremony being moved into the Wedding Reception Tent, The Garden’s Team will set up an indoor arbor for your ceremony décor. Any ceremony site day-of adjustments (drying ceremony seating outside, adjusting the aisle, setting up the arbor) made due to weather does not result in extra fees.

Heating for the Cool Months

A refreshing rain in June is a whole different ballgame than a north wind rain in September. Keep in mind, Mother Nature tends to dictate when and where tent sides are put on and when the heat gets turned on. During the summer months, a little rain means we can let the beautiful views of the gardens in by putting only one or two tent sides on. During the fall when rain tends to be a little chillier, all the tent sides are attached and the heat is turned on.

11 Helpful Tips for Decorating Your Outdoor Wedding Venue

Make Your Best Day Ever Seamless and Unforgettable

Saying “I Do” under a canopy of nature, listening to the sweet songs of the birds, having space to breathe… these are just a few reasons couples decide to choose the great outdoors for their wedding day. We may be a little bias, but choosing an outdoor wedding venue for your wedding day definitely has it’s perks and we’re here to give you a few tips for decorating your outdoor event space.

1. Consider the Season!

Use nature! Too many signs and decorations can take away from an environment’s natural beauty. The best part of getting married at an outdoor wedding venue is the constantly changing scenery with each season.

So use the leaves as a floor! Use the lush leaves of the trees as a perfect backdrop. Make sure the color tones of your floral installations don’t clash with the environment around them. We’re not saying you can’t have pops of color, but colors like bright hot pink next to the muted neutrals often clash and are distracting.

2. Make it Element Proof

Wind, Rain, Hot, Cold – Minnesota gives us plenty of reasons to be weather prepared. So bring on the floral wire, industrial easels and zip ties!

We recommend high top table linens that are tied at the center or tight to the tables along with reception table linens that are long (to avoid wind blowing your linens away). Avoid glass whenever possible. Wide-based vases are the way to go along with plexiglass for signs. You wouldn’t want your reserved seating chart to come crashing down!

3. Adorn with Garlands and Draping

You want your wedding venue space to reflect your style and to transport your guests to another place! Loosely draped garlands to statement draping and light combinations can elevate your outdoor wedding ceremony and reception space.

Garlands

When it comes to garlands, they come in all shapes and sizes – Classic to Modern, we love it all!

Garland décor ideas include: suspending green wreaths by your head table, incorporating organic garland at your ceremony site (like Rachel and Graham pictured below), attaching greenery to statement lighting, suspending it in the air above the head table or dancefloor, or even installing a trellis.

Draping

Billowing fabric adds an ethereal element to your wedding day. Sheer white, blush, or a pop of color fastened with florals, twinkle lights, or an exceptional lighting design will transform a blank slate into a masterpiece. Talk about romantic wedding day vibes!

4. Make a Statement with Floral Installations

Instead of just bouquets on tabletops (especially in your reception area), think about using floral installations to fill your outdoor space. Suspended greenery and impressive floral arrangements take your guests from “Wow!” to “How?” These artistic and impressive details give your outdoor wedding venue an untamed garden vibe.

5. Seek out Eco-Friendly Decorations

Your wedding is meant to be a celebration of love and one of the greatest days of your life but, unfortunately, it can be one of the most wasteful days. We’re not saying you should skip the party or forgo those gorgeous details, but we recommend reusing and recycling as much as you can as well as avoiding décor that is harmful to the environment (such as glitter, rice or balloons).

Rent or borrow your décor: Check with family and friends to see what they have for you to use for your wedding décor. (You never know what cool vintage items you’ll find in Grandma’s basement!) You can also check with a professional decorator, your professional day-of-coordinator, bar or catering services to see if they have any included items for your special evening to rent or borrow.

Donate your decor: If you decide to go all out with a floral installation, there are great places for you to compost the florals or even donate them. Twofold Blooms, a local non-profit in Minnesota, repurposes florals from weddings and makes them into smaller bouquets for seniors in memory care or hospice.

Be eco-friendly by decorating your reception tent with live trees! You heard us correctly! After your wedding, you can plant them in your honor.

6. Bring the Outdoors, Indoors and the Indoors, Outdoors!

Wedding trends will always come and go, but you’ll find that an outdoorsy, natural wedding is always a popular choice. So, why not mix and match the elements to really bring the space to life? So hang greenery in The Garden’s reception tent. Drop a vintage couch behind The Garden’s Fireplace. Make your outdoor space unique and “so you”.

7. Set Up Plenty of Food and Water Stations

Your guests will need plenty of water and snacks on a hot summer day. Snacks and drinks (not just the alcoholic kind) keep people happy…which makes your wedding day more enjoyable and memorable. Infused water tables and donut walls are definitely a fan favorite.

Defused water, iced tea, and just plain old water gives alcohol-free options for hydration for your Outdoor Wedding in Minnesota.

8. Provide a Photo Station

Hire a booth or make a booth! Photo stations provide excellent entertainment for guests of all ages and they get to take a special souvenir home from your day.

As an outdoor wedding venue, The Garden’s has plenty of fun spaces to convert into a photo station or to park your favorite photo camper.

9. Don’t forget the Night Lighting

As we approach the holidays, you can appreciate the magic of driving through town and seeing the general décor, but then coming back at night to see an entirely different show! A few strings of twinkles can take you far.

10. Bring a Tool Kit

If you wonder if you’re going to need a certain tool for set-up. Bring it. Better yet, bring two. For example, many outdoor wedding venues require that you bring your own ladder for decorating. We suggest bringing one or two – especially if you have several people helping you set up the morning of your wedding.

Other helpful items to bring for set-up include: Scissors (again, bring several sets), zip-ties, extra draping and linens if you are providing these, extra strings of lights if you are providing these, and twine or floral wire.

11. Hire the Professionals

When it comes to decorating your venue, sometimes it’s hard to decipher what YOU should do, and what the professionals should do. Your budget matters, but so does your sanity.

Professional decorators know how much fabric they need to fill the space and make it look intentional; They have extra lightbulbs and replacement light strands; They have the biggest ladders you’ve ever seen to get the draping and lights nice and high; They come back at midnight to take everything down so you don’t have to worry about it. The list goes on and on and we believe they are worth every penny.

You don’t have to take our word for it, ask a professional decorator…

The best way to stretch your budget when decorating for your wedding is to concentrate décor in specific areas and make them Instagram worthy. This can be done through color, lighting and using statement pieces. Whether they are flowers, vignettes, or props, focal areas need to catch the eye, and capture your guests’ senses.”
