Classic Elegant Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at The Gardens

Elevate the grand entrance of the bride with ceremony gate & doors for the awed admiration of the wedding guests.

Crafted in classic traditional design, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors have the ability to make time stand still. In those sweet moments as the bride readies herself behind the door to the moment of the big reveal when the doors slowly open, everyone is suspended in time.

Glenn Switzer, venue owner & designer, built his first pergola in the late 1980’s while working as a landscape designer. As a frequent traveler, Glenn explored gardens and garden structures throughout the world. To bring what he admired from aboard, Glenn laid out the former landscape nursery, now The Gardens, on the European concept of a formal garden, grid pattern with multiple walkways and access points. He also designed and built a large formal white pergola years before The Gardens was a wedding venue. Maybe it was foreshadowing or even luck, but the white garden pergola was placed in the perfect location for the future Grand Promenade ceremony spot. When it came time to design the Grand Promenade, the location of the white pergola worked perfectly as a 75’ aisle was added down the center.

But how did the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors come to be? It all started with a bride inquiring if The Gardens had any doors that could be place at the entrance of the Grand Promenade for her to have a big reveal moment with her fiancé. In one of those instances that drives Glenn’s wife crazy, Glenn replied, “We don’t have any, but we could build some!” Since the bride was having her ceremony on the Grand Promenade, the design of the gate and doors would mimic the details of the white garden pergola. However, engineering how the posts would stand-up, as well as be mobile, took a bit more pre-planning. Interested in learning how it all came together? Check out our Beautiful Wedding Ceremony Cedar Gate & Doors for The Grand Promenade YouTube video.

One of the detail Glenn really appreciates in the construction of the gate and doors is the use of the old-world style of pounding nails called clinching. It is where a nail is driven all the way through the board and support boards, bent over and driven into the wood to create a tight bond.

A fair amount of time was spent on the doors to ensure they were equal in size and shape, as well as opened evenly. To create a classic romantic look, scalloped cuts were made on the side pieces making a wide enough space for the ushers to stand on either side to open the doors. The 6-foot doors also have a rounded cascading top to ensure even the tallest bride can be completely hidden.

While the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors were designed for the Grand Promenade, it has also been used at the Lath House ceremony location. A rainstorm the morning of a wedding planned on the Grand Promenade resulted in the grass being too wet. So the amazing and flexible staff moved the ceremony gate & door to the entrance of the Lath House. Low and behold, it was an amazing fit there too! That’s what is so inspiring about The Gardens…. its chameleon-like nature that allows for your wedding style to shine through.

Designed in the same style as the Grand Promenade’s pergola, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a classic and elegant look.

Steady and ready. The bride accompanied by her dad prepare for the sweetest walk together down the aisle.

You can choose to place the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at the entrance to the Lath House or the Grand Promenade.

The ceremony concludes and the couple stroll hand in hand down the aisle and back through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors.

The wedding party assembled in front of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors in an effort to allow the bride to stay hidden until just the right moment.

While the guests file into the Grand Promenade, they too can enjoy walking through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors. But remember, it’s doors open for everyone except the bride.

Everyone’s attention is right where it should be…..the beautiful bride.

The flower girl and ring bearer as through. Now is the time for the doors to be closed for the bride’s big entrance.

Designed and built by venue owner & designer, Glenn Switzer, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors are both fully-functional and beautiful.

A couple quick fluffs and adjustments (thanks dad!) and it’s show time!

The scalloped side pieces of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors are wide enough for ushers to stand when they open the doors.

The Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a perfect frame for the bride and groom.

Last words of advice are exchanged between bride and her dad as the ceremony gate and doors are slowly opened.

Worried that your head might show while standing behind the doors prior to the big reveal? No worries, the 6 foot doors have a rounded cascading top to ensure even the tallest bride can be completely hidden.

Guests eagerly await the opening of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors to reveal the gorgeous bride.

It’s okay to get a little teary eyed at seeing the bride walk down the aisle. If you want to blame it on allergies, we won’t tell.

The new Mr. & Mrs. steal one of many kisses to come under the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors.

It’s your time to shine! I mean you are getting married and all!

When it comes to who will walk you down the aisle, the choice is yours! Some brides have dad, some mom, some both and some go it alone. It’s all about choosing what means the most to you.

You can almost feel the anticipation of the bride as she prepares to walk through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors and into a brand new chapter of her life.

The Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a welcoming vibe into the Lath House at The Gardens.

Judy & William’s Art Deco Inspired Garden Wedding

Real Wedding Spotlight: An ethereal spring wedding full of delicate details and special moments.

Weddings days can be planned in different timeframes. Some are put together quickly in a manner of weeks. Others, take years to get everything just right. There are even those weddings that get a little more bonus time thanks to a little thing called COVID-19. Maybe you’ve heard of it…….

For Judy & William, COVID-19 threw them a curveball requiring them to postpone their wedding day for another year. When the day finally came these two hosted the most ethereal spring wedding celebration full of thoughtful details and sentimental touches while surrounded by an outpouring of love and support.

With the natural colors of spring all around, the couple chose to infuse romantic white styling with blush based floral arrangements and hanging greenery installations. With special touches throughout the day like the ceremony foot washing and capturing their ceremony and reception over time in the form of oil-based canvas paintings, Judy & William wedding day created the perfect mix of purposeful styling and deep meaning.

White crisp draping and floral installations on the Lath House arch creates a romantic “I Do” kind of vibe.

Curious as to what that gorgeous pink flowering tree is? It’s an Eastern Redbud. As much as we’d love for it to stay flowering for months, it typically has a 2-3 week window of thousands of tiny pink flowers before turning to green leaves.

Hanging greenery installations, geometric centerpieces and café lighting created an art deco ambiance in the wedding reception tent.

Beautiful Wedding Head Table: The Rustic Refined™ ~ A Gardens Original

Make your wedding a one-of-a-kind event with a unique head table for your wedding reception.

You’ve always dreamed of having a completely unique wedding reflective of who you are. If you’ve spent any time on The Gardens website or blogs, it’s clear that The Gardens is passionate about couples being able to create a wedding day that is uniquely theirs.

As a designer, Glenn Switzer, the venue owner, has always thought it was important for couples to be free to create an event that reflects who they are as a couple and what is important to them. Ten years ago, when Glenn set out to open the venue, he wasn’t looking to create a cookie cutter experience for couples. Instead, he wanted to create a space where no two weddings were ever the same.

This idea of couples creating a wedding that was unique to them carried over to the reception. Glenn’s vision was to create unique handcrafted items that had the ability to give off different vibes based on the décor items around them. This overall principle of design allows for something that is formal to be dressed down or the ability to take something rustic and elevate it to a formal look. That’s exactly why Glenn created the Head Table Packages as part of the Gardens Originals™ series.

The rustic feel has remained one of the most preeminent wedding styles. So for Glenn it only made seem to design and craft tables with a rustic vibe. Enter the Rustic Refined™ tables. Now let’s get real for a moment. The word “rustic” has been used to describe a variety of things, including old crappy garage sale finds. That’s definitely not what we are going for with the Rustic Refined™ tables. The handcrafted nature of the tables with nice clean lines and unique construction distinguishes it as a one-of-a-kind piece.

With his passion for salvaging and repurposing materials, it’s easy to see why everything at The Gardens has a previous life. Six years before the first wedding ever took place, Glenn disassembled an 1880’s granary constructed out of pine that was situated on his uncle’s farm not far from The Gardens. Working with Ben Finely of Duck Hill Workshop, Glenn and Ben built the Rustic Refined™ tabletops out of the wood used on the interior walls of the granary. Studying the kerf markings (or slits made by the saw cutting) on the tabletops and sides, it’s clear that the wood was cut from a local sawmill along the Cannon River. And the writing and markings on the wood, demonstrate its use as a granary. Side note….the wood siding of the granary was also repurposed as the wall behind the fireplace in the Gardens Suite Dressing Room.

Thanks to many years of constructing rustic pergolas and using the tree limbs in design and building, the method carried over nicely in creating the table bases and legs. Building tables is not a new concept for Glenn, since he has crafted numerous tables, including the Cedar Wedding Banquet Tables and the King’s Harvest Head Table.

The rich wood of the Rustic Refined™ tabletop combined with the hand harvest cedar tree limbs for the legs creates a distinctive item that can make your event as unique as your love story. Come visit The Gardens, take a tour and start planning your “uniquely you” dream weddings! Because remember, at The Gardens of Castle Rock, you make your Best Day Ever.

A completely unique table leg option…..hand harvested cedar tree limbs of the Rustic Refined™ tables.

Dress it up or down, the versatility of the Rustic Refined™ table can’t be beat!

Don’t you just love how the modern look of the loveseat compliments the rustic look of the Rustic Refined™ table? We sure do!

The Rustic Refined™ tabletops were made out of the wood from this 1880’s granary less than a mile from The Gardens.

Worried that different shades of wood won’t go together for your wedding décor vision?  No worries!  The richness of the pine Rustic Refined™ table compliments the golden hues of The Garden cedar wedding banquet tables.

Be a part of a 100+ years of history by incorporating the Rustic Refined™ tables into your wedding reception décor.

Stress-Free Outdoor Wedding: 8 Essential Tips to Manage Your Perfect Day

Planning an outdoor wedding is easy-peasy when you know these important tips.

The grass between your bare feet. A gentle breeze carrying the fresh smell of spring. The rich golden hues of falling leaves. The warm long summer evenings spent catching up with friends. Whatever the season, experiencing the beauty of the outdoors is like nothing else. Having an outdoor wedding creates a beautiful backdrop for your most important day. But, with the outdoors comes a variety of variables you need to consider. Addressing these issues with help create a stress-free day.

Rain, rain go away and when it does, here comes the sun…….Did you know there are actually more full sun days than rainy days? That’s why it’s important to not only have a Plan B for rainy weather, but to also have a plan for a hot full sun day. Provide guests with sunscreen in case they forgot to lather up before leaving home and be sure to choose an outdoor wedding venue with plenty of available shade.

The wind vs. your adorable Pinterest décor…… You found the most adorable Pinterest table centerpiece ideas that you want to incorporate into your wedding day, but remember when hosting an outdoor wedding there is a high likelihood that you will be dealing with some sort of wind, whether it be a refreshing light breeze or some strong gusts. To figure out if your ideal tablescape will work for your event, set it up outside on a table and leave it for the day. At the end of the day, you’ll know what can handle the wind and what you need to hunt down in the neighbor’s yard.

Outdoor wedding venues come in many shapes and sizes…… With so many choices when it comes to outdoor wedding venues, deciding to be outdoors is just the start. Whether you choose a farm-barn venue, formal city park, arboretum or garden venue, they all have different surfaces and guest accommodations. A city park may have level paving and formal benches or chairs so it is okay for guests to wear dresses with heels or suits with polished dress shoes. If your venue is a little more rustic and natural with gravel/dirt surfaces or hay bales for sitting, guests may want to consider casual attire with flats, wedges or sandals. The bottom line, communicate the details about your outdoor venue so guests can be the most comfortable.

Not to sound like you mom, but “layers, layer, layers!” Outdoor weddings, no matter the season, have temperature changes throughout the day. Let your guests know that once the sun goes down, it might be a good idea to have a sweater, fleece or their favorite North Face. Another fun way to make sure guests are warm and cozy, especially for weddings in the early spring and fall, is to provide small fleece blankets as party favors.

Looking for a laid-back vibe, an outdoor wedding is the way to go! We all know that Mother Nature has a mind of her own and when having an outdoor wedding, flexibility is key. Let’s be honest, being outdoors brings more variables into the equation. If you’re counting on everything running on a perfectly timed schedule, an outdoor wedding may not be your best option. Outdoor wedding venues tend to be larger and more spread out than an indoor space, so you’ll want to consider that in your planning. The abundance of space is one of the many reasons outdoor weddings are so much more fun. From dancing the night away, to sitting by a cozy fireplace or enjoying a quiet walk while catching up with a close friend, guests will have so many options to enjoy your event.

3 Very Important Questions….. When choosing an outdoor wedding venue, ask these three important questions:

1. How long is the rental of the venue? The majority of outdoor venues rent the space for 12-hours, typically noon-midnight. Being able to access the venue before noon, allows you more time to decorate, relax and soak in the day.

2. Do we have access to the entire venue? Some outdoor venues, like private clubs or golf courses, only have certain areas accessible to you on your wedding day as they have to also accommodate club members and other guests. If you see a gorgeous spot or area while touring an outdoor venue that you’d love be able to use on your wedding day, be sure to ask the venue representative if that area is accessible to you.

3. Are there other weddings/events held at the venue at the same time as ours? If you don’t want to worry about guests from other weddings mistakenly joining yours or the general public wandering through your ceremony during your vows, be sure to ask the venue representative if the venue hosts multiple weddings/events or is open to the public on your wedding day.

Don’t obsess about Plan B…… Yes, there is a possibility that you may have to use your Plan B should it rain, but don’t overly plan for it. Talk with your venue representative to get their feel on a rain event. If the venue representative is nervous and shies away from the question, consider that a red flag. If they answer confidently outlining their backup plan for less than perfect weather, know that whatever your day holds weather wise, both you and the venue will be prepared.

Can you hear me now? How about now? The outdoors is amazing for a lot of things, but containing sound is not one of them. With an abundance of space also comes the ability for sound to be carried off and guests unable to hear your “I Do’s”. Be sure to find out if your venue provides microphones and a speaker for your ceremony or if you need to hire a DJ or sound tech to provide a ceremony sound system. Are you wanting a string quartet or other live music option for your ceremony? Be sure your musicians have a sound system so the beautiful music can be heard by everyone.

With a little planning and attention, these variables are easy to overcome to create the most memorable outdoor wedding. Making your event truly one of a kind.

Outdoor weddings can be unpredictable, but that’s what makes them even more fun!

Communication is key!  Make sure you share with guests that your event will be held outdoors.

The partial shade of The Lath House creates a comfortable environment for guests to enjoy the wedding ceremony.

The first dance as Mr. & Mrs. held in a gorgeous natural environment…….who’s in!?!?

Forget the dark and stuffy reception hall…let your guests have a blast playing yard games!

Spending your wedding day in the warm sunshine is the best, just remember to wear sunscreen to avoid the next-day-sunburn.

Outdoor events in the cooler months of the year mean providing small creature comforts for your guests.  Many outdoor venues have fireplaces, firepits and patio heaters, plus a basket of small fleece blankets for guests is a great idea too!

There’s a reason they call it “The GREAT Outdoors”.

Wedding celebrations held outdoors on warm summer nights create a kind of unexplainable magic and memories for a lifetime!

The outdoors is great for a lot of things, but containing sound is not one of them!  Be sure to check with your outdoor venue to see what sound capabilities are available for your ceremony because everyone wants to hear every single sweet word.

Have a Plan B when it comes to inclement weather, but don’t obsess over it.  The day will be perfect, no matter the weather conditions because you are marrying the love of your life!

Ever want to dance under the stars? Choose to host your wedding at an outdoor venue and your one step closer to making your dream come true!

The Lath House ~ The Most Unique Wedding Ceremony Location

Minnesota’s most unique ceremony site…decades in the making

Considered the heart of The Gardens of Castle Rock, the Lath House has a long and storied history decades in the making.  In fact, the space’s uniqueness is incomparable to all other ceremony sites.

Grandpa Switzer in front of the original nursery building.

The nursery began in 1926, with one of the original nursery buildings located in the Lath House area. By the early 1950’s, a pole barn addition was constructed where the Lath House currently stands.  But in early December 1981, at the height of the Christmas tree and wreath season, a massive fire broke out in the middle of the night.  As you can probably imagine, a building filled with Christmas trees and wreaths didn’t take long to burn to the ground.  It was a total loss.  All that remained were some scorched poles on the former building’s north side.  Look closely and you can still see some of the charred remains today.

Fast forward a couple of years…… As the retail nursery continued to grow, additional display space was needed, especially for the shade loving perennials…. think hostas, pulmonaria and lilies.  Glenn’s father, Garry, quickly realized the spot where the pole barn once stood would be the perfect spot to build a shade loving perennial greenhouse.

To create the greenhouse, rows of round utility poles were set throughout the space and a 2x 4 grid pattern was constructed creating an open-air style roof.  Rolls of lath boards were then laid across the roof structure creating the perfect partially shaded space for perennials to flourish.

Early 1950’s pole barn addition.

Now you may be asking yourself….” What are lath boards exactly?” Lath is a narrow strip of straight-grained wood.  Typically used under roof shingles or tiles, on lath and plaster walls and ceilings to hold plaster, and in lattice and trellis work.  If you’ve lived in a turn of the century home and done any remodeling work, you’ve probably seen lath boards behind the plaster.

The fire that started in the Christmas Tree Room of the pole barn resulted in the building being a total loss.

The Lath Greenhouse continued to be in use until 2006 when the business transitioned out of retail nursery sales to landscaping design and construction.   To learn more about the history of The Gardens, CLICK HERE.

Over the next six years, the Lath Greenhouse was a bit neglected and forgotten as the space was not utilized for the landscaping design and construction business.

As interest in hosting wedding on the property increased, Glenn designed and built the Grand Promenade ceremony site to appeal to couples looking for a classic outdoor wedding ceremony site.  To learn more about the Grand Promenade, CLICK HERE.

During the first three venue tours, Glenn would show potential couples the Grand Promenade ceremony site.  Every single one pointed to the Lath Greenhouse and asked, “What’s that?” By the fourth tour, Glenn decided to add the Lath Greenhouse into the tour and ask couples if they would be interested in seeing the venue’s “rustic ceremony site”.  With that the Lath House ceremony site was born!

As interest grew in the Lath House, so did the love and care Glenn provided to the space. Since the Lath greenhouse structure didn’t have lath boards all the way to the entrance, Glenn began an arduous quest to locate more lath boards.  But not just any lath boards.  These needed to rustic weathered pieces attached with wire…. basically, snow fencing that had seen some long dark winters.  After being frustrated by weeks of unsuccessful searching, Glenn mentioned his dilemma to a friend who, wouldn’t you know, said, “I’ve got a bunch of old rolls you can have!” Problem solved!

The Lath House was built in 1982 to serve as a shaded retail space for perennials.

As a fluke, Glenn decided to lighten up the Lath House by hanging some leftover Christmas lights from the nursery throughout the roof structure.  Couples loved the lights so much that in 2018 the lights were replaced with over 1,100 feet of LED café lights.

The Lath House surrounded by retail nursery items circa 1986.

Now what’s with all the beautiful grape vines covering the Lath House?  We can only take partial credit for those.  The other credit goes to Mother Nature!  Wild grapes spread organically and have always been around the nursery.  In fact, take a stroll around the grounds and you will very well see them!  Since the 1980’s, there have been an abundance of native Minnesota wild grapes growing in the back of the Lath House or today what is considered the front of the space where the natural wood ceremony arch stands.  Glenn added addition winter hardy table grapes (totally edible) around the entrance of the Lath House filling it out the lush inviting look.

The black landscaping fabric that covers the ground was the original flooring used when the space was the perennial shade garden and has served its purpose well.  Glenn is currently working on a design to replace the fabric with landscape pavers to further enhance the beauty of the space.  No timeline is set, but we are excited to see the finished product.

In 2012, the first wedding ceremony was held in the Lath House.  The ceremony spot continues to be one of the most popular at The Gardens of Castle Rock.  With the ability to accommodate up to 300 guests, the versatility of the space is second to none.  While it gives off a rustic vibe, the choices of seating (black chairs, white chairs, or benches), décor, draping and floral can all change the feel making no two wedding the same……and isn’t that what being unique is all about?!

From the traditional head table with the wedding party seated on one side to the intimate sweetheart table, the options for creating your ideal head table are endless.

If you are looking to have the entire wedding party seated around one table, the King’s Harvest Head Table is the perfect option! Typically situated in the center of the reception space with the couple in the middle of the table, the King’s Harvest Head Table easily becomes the showpiece of the reception space.

Designed and built by the team at The Workshop at The Gardens, the King’s Harvest Head Table is crafted out of western red cedar similar to the Gardens Cedar Wedding Banquet Tables and the Garden Cedar Wedding Mid-Height Tables.  The versatility and simple beauty of western red cedar makes it a favorite of The Gardens.

To give the table a rustic appeal, 6’ x 6’ timbers were used on the bottom while smooth cedar boards were used for the table’s surface.  Traditional timber frame techniques and joinery were employed to create the table’s formidable base while bridge washers and ¾” galvanized machine bolts were utilized to stabilize the table’s legs.  There’s no chance this table will blow over in a strong wind!  Once assembled the table was covered with a clear coat of polyurethane to pull out the natural grain of the western red cedar.

One of the most impressive things about the King’s Harvest Head Table is its 50” width creating an amazing amount of real estate to design the most memorable tablespace. The table is also very functional with the ability to configure into four different lengths to accommodate up to 22 people (see chart below).

The King’s Harvest Head Table is part of the Gardens Originals collection of rental items. To find out how you can incorporate this gorgeous table into your wedding reception, please contact a Gardens Representative at 651-264-9510 or info@thegardensofcastlerock.com.

Wedding Reception Garden Pavilion

The Garden Pavilion’s unique time-honored craftsmanship provides a unique backdrop for your picture-perfect wedding day.

What could be better than being gathered in a beautiful place with those you love celebrating the best day of your life? Not much, especially if that beautiful place is under the impressive hand-hewn beams of the Garden Pavilion as you gather with your wedding party for a celebratory wedding day toast.

It’s official…..drinks for the wedding party! Photo Credit: Sweet Shibui Photography

As one of the most remarkable structures at The Gardens, it’s easy to see why the Garden Pavilion is the star of the Garden’s reception patio. Venue owner, Glenn Switzer, had a hand in every aspect of the design and construction of the impressive post and beam timber frame structure with hand-hewn timbers making it a unique one-of-a-kind venue feature.

Whether you decide to stage your reception bar service under the Garden Pavilion or decide to use the space as a fun snack or dessert bar, the Garden Pavilion’s versatility is just another reason The Gardens is the perfect place to create a wedding day that is completely and uniquely yours!

It all started when Glenn was brainstorming ideas to create a covered structure for the reception area. At that same time, a friend and local farmer who was clearing a farm site offered Glenn an opportunity to harvest tall old spruce trees on the site. Never one to pass up the opportunity to gather timbers, Glenn jumped at the opportunity. To see the harvest process, CLICK HERE.

With 15 large spruce trees harvested and transported to The Gardens, the next step was figuring out how to incorporate them into the covered structure Glenn was designing. At this time, Glenn had extensive experience in designing and crafting garden pergolas and arbors, but this was a whole new ballgame. You know the saying….” Go big or go home.” The desire to create a memorable structure was strong so Glenn chose to go big!

After consulting a friend with extensive construction experience, Glenn knew exactly what he wanted to create……an impressive hand-hewn garden pavilion. Drawings were finished and engineering was completed, it was time to start building!

Hand hewing the timbers of the Garden Pavilion took Glenn a bit longer than expected….to say the least!

Enter the traditional technique of hand hewing. The method has been around for centuries commonly used before the advent of the industrial-era sawmills. Hand hewing is taking a round log and using an axe to shape it into a square to create post and beam structures. To say its hard physical work wound be an understatement! Take a look by CLICKING HERE!

Glenn originally estimated that with the help of a friend, they could complete the hand hewing over a couple weekends and install the structure when the Pavilion Bathrooms were being constructed. After the first log was hewed, it was clear that it was a much more labor-intensive project then he had originally thought after the first log was hewed. The hewing of the logs would have to wait till winter, as well as the construction of the pavilion. After 300+ hours of hand hewing over the winter of 2016-17 the timbers were ready!

With the hand hewing finally complete it was time to assemble the structure. Typically, structures like this would be pre-assembled and dismantled elsewhere and then reassembled into the space. But the timbers were so large, that they required to be assembled in the space that they would be permanently located.

The concrete and stone footings were already in place from the earlier construction of the Pavilion Restroom building. Many of the stones were excavated from exactly where the Garden Pavilion stands now and hand split by Glenn…. sparking an interest in the joy of hand quarrying granite blocks. Interested in seeing how it’s done? CLICK HERE.

Setting and securing the timbers of the Garden Pavilion was no small feat.

Once the hand hewed posts and beams were sorted and cut, it was time to stand the posts up. Girts between posts created bents and the bents were all connected with wall plates. Angled knee braces stiffen the structure and help carry the weight downward to the footings. Glenn designed and fabricated the metal brackets that make the critical connection that held the wood posts to the stone footings. With the help of the skid loader for the lower timbers and a crane for the ridge beam and rafters it took approximately three weeks to set the structure. With the ridge beam 18” square and 32 feet long there is no doubt this is a strong and sturdy structure. In fact, the process of hand-hewing the ridge beam can be seen by CLICKING HERE

Now it’s time for a fun Gardens fact…. Did you know the only part of a tree that is alive is the bark? It’s true! The cellular makeup of the bark allows for the movement of water and nutrients a tree need to live and seals in the moisture within the tree. Once the bark is removed (i.e., hand hewing) the exposed wood will begin to dry. It can take years to dry as the moisture in the center of the timber slowly makes its way to the surface. In addition, spruce logs have pockets of pitch (a sugary secretion) within them that slowly make its way to the surface in little drops. Or as Glenn likes to call it, golden tears

Once the timber frame structure was completed, it was time to construct the roof and ceiling. Made of western red cedar, Glenn used a highbred system of the ridge beam and wall plates to hold the rafters together creating a clean constructed roof within the Garden Pavilion. Repurposed steel from a 1970’s barn was used for the exterior roof and classic European galvanized round gutters finished off the look. If you are dying to know the difference between European and American style round gutters, just track Glenn down at the next event and he would be happy to tell you all about it.

The finishing touch of the Garden Pavilion is the rustic outdoor hanging light fixture that shines down from the center of the Garden Pavilion. Designed and constructed by Glenn himself, the center portion of the light is actually a galvanized planter pot from Glenn’s wife’s grandparents 1950’s post WWII house. Interested in making one for yourself? Check out the How to Build A Rustic Outdoor Hanging Light video by CLICKING HERE.

While we enjoy sharing all the technical details of the construction, it’s the true honest craftsmanship of the Garden Pavilion that contributes to The Gardens warm and natural environment making it the picture-perfect location for your wedding day.  Interested in seeing the Garden Pavilion in-person and discovering how it can help you create your Best Day Ever, SCHUDULE YOUR PERSONALIZED TOUR TODAY!
