Wedding Day Hearth & Home ~ The Gardens Natural Stone Fireplace

Embrace tradition and symbolism on your wedding day by the fireplace hearth.

Wedding days are full of traditions and symbols of deep meaning. The hearth can represent love, fertility, and life. In addition, it can symbolize home. So when it comes to a wedding day, nothing is better than gathering with family and friends at the fireplace hearth.

One of the signature elements at The Gardens of Castle Rock is the hand-crafted natural stone fireplace situated on the reception patio. Designed by venue owner Glenn Switzer and constructed through a collective effort of friends, the fireplace is a significant statement piece.

As a previous nursery & landscape design business, The Gardens’ space had plenty of natural beauty, but as it evolved into a wedding venue, the space needed a centering focus.

As a landscape designer, Glenn creates spaces that focus on the four elements: earth, air, water, and fire. When considering what the first big addition to The Gardens should be, Glenn decided on a fireplace or more specifically a hearth stone. The hearth is the symbol of a home and when you think about it, marriage is the creation of a home. Two people coming together to create a new family, a new home. That is why the fireplace became the perfect statement piece of The Gardens. It’s amazing how many family photos are taken in front of the fireplace. If you ever second guess the importance of a fireplace and draw of a hearth. Think of the number of photos you and your family have taken in front of a fireplace.

With all the fuzzy design stuff being said, let’s get down to the real-world installation mechanics of the fireplace.

First, it’s called the natural stone fireplace because it is. No faux stone or thin veneers here. With over 30 tons of stones used in building the fireplace, it’s the real deal. With that much weight, you can bet full footings were required at four feet deep and over eighteen feet wide. Making it wider than the fireplace itself!

There were at least five different types of stone used on the fireplace – Chilton limestone, Fond du Lac, Lannon, Blue stone, and one of Glenn’s favorite’s Aqua Grantique. With its white quartz and green veining amongst the dark charcoal slate blue, the Aqua Grantique forms both the base of the fireplace and the feature band above the mantel. Many of these stones were left over from previous stone projects. In fact, if you’ve ever taken a trip behind the Workshop, you know there are piles of stone regiments. Let’s just say Glenn is a keeper and has a hard time discarding items. It can drive some people crazy, including his wife!

Walk around the back of the fireplace and you’ll see the sun ray design constructed out of a granite stone that was harvested at The Gardens and hand split by Glenn.

There are also several special stones tucked into the stonework of the fireplace and other Gardens’ stone structures from Glenn’s travels throughout the country, as well as his dad’s stone collection.

Spend some time studying the fireplace and you will pick up on some of the formal classic lines of the fireplace design. What really sets off the design are the two arches incorporated in the fireplace. The first being a light eyebrow shape on the chimney structure and the second is a gorgeous arch formed by voussoir stones that outline the firebox. Look above that arch and you’ll discover a horseshoe that was found while excavating for the fireplace. We like to think it brings good luck to all who visit The Gardens.

In true fashion, Glenn’s formal designs always have a piece of spontaneity. On the fireplace, the large stone that marks the spark arrestor is a widely irregular slab of Chilton limestone weighing over 200 pounds. Let’s just say it was a process getting it set so high.

While all that information is wonderful, how does it translate to a wedding reception? As a centering focus, the fireplace is an instant magnet for gathering. That’s why throughout the day, you will find guests gathering around and near the fireplace. The sturdy six-foot mantel welcomes and encourages couples to make it their own with décor items. We absolutely love it when a couple creates a décor piece for their wedding day that then becomes part of their everyday. Whether it’s a decorative plaque, carved letters, or a photograph. The mantel and the fireplace itself, allows for each couple to make it their hearth, our should we say home for the day.

Let’s not overlook the practical purpose of the fireplace too. Warmth on a cool fall evening or the perfect spot to roast marshmallows to S’mores perfection.

For more information on how The Gardens came to be, check out The Gardens’ Story…..What Makes It So Special.

If the fireplace could shake your hand, it would be a firm, friendly one. Being made of real stone, this means you get a real handshake. One that says, “All are welcome, but I’m especially happy to see you.”

On your guest’s list of things to do, coming in at the top, is the opportune photo op and The Fireplace never disappoints.

We love when each space becomes uniquely YOU ~ Utilizing pictures, monograms, light up signs, candles, and flower arrangements are just some ideas.

First dance in front of The Fireplace? Yes, please! The snap, crackle of the fire humming along to your song, guests gathering in for a closer look, the towering trees beyond encapsulating the whole scene… it’s definitely going to be a day to remember.

The lush foliage of The Garden’s surrounding The Fireplace can stand alone in it’s own beauty without you having to add anything; but, it’s also simple enough that you can add your own pops of color.

Guest’s hardly noticed the chill of this late October wedding amongst the warm, yellow leaves of fall and the heat rolling out of the hearth.

The Gardens Suite and Cottage (dressing suites) are nice and close to The Fireplace to keep your bridal party and family occupied during the morning events of the day… and it also ensures they don’t run off too far if they’re needed for hair and make-up or one more photo.

Blush pink sedums welcome in our September couples and their guests to The Gardens of Castle Rock.

While you may not hope for rain on your wedding day, drizzly days help create vivid, moody images in front of The Fireplace.

Guest comfort is important when it comes to an outdoor wedding reception. Our standing heaters help guests stay extra warm around The Fireplace in the fall.

The Garden’s Pizza Oven loves to partner up with The Fireplace to establish a unique evening atmosphere of crackling firewood, an entrancing nighttime glow, and the irresistible smell of melting mozzarella in the air.

Do you spy a gorgeous sunburst on the back of The Fireplace? Abbey and Dan’s photographer decided to capture this gorgeous stonework amid family pictures on their big day.

The same sun that peeked through the trees for their engagement session is peeking through the trees that tower over The Fireplace on E&J’s wedding day. We love the anticipation that fills the air each wedding morning!

The twinkle lights behind The Fireplace light up the night and provide the perfect spot for late night yard games.

Have you considered providing cocktail hour entertainment for your guests? The area in front of The Fireplace provides the perfect stage for quartets, vocalists, or acoustic musicians.

Some guests may not want to dance and that’s okay! The Fireplace is close enough to The Garden’s Reception Tent that they can still join in on “Sweet Caroline” when it comes on.

The Fireplace is at the heart of your reception space – between The Reception Tent, Garden Pavilion, and Main Assembly Building.

There are many beautiful spaces at The Gardens of Castle Rock but, when nighttime rolls around, The Fireplace is a show-stopper for your outdoor wedding reception.

Simple decorative wedding signs and initials on the mantle are sometimes all you need to make The Gardens of Castle Rock look like the whole space is yours! (And to let your guests know they’re in the right place…)

Over the foliage and through the trees to The Garden’s Fireplace I go… How would you like your wedding reception space to be a place that guests can explore?

We provide the firewood, the twinkle lights, and the space but you and your guests make each evening at The Gardens magical.

How to seamlessly use round tables at your wedding reception.

Incorporating round tables to create the perfect layout for your wedding reception.

We all know how important it is to create a wedding day that is uniquely yours. Second to the wedding ceremony, the wedding reception has the greatest impact on the wedding day. One of the biggest considerations on the feel and flow of the wedding reception is the table layout. There are two primary tables to consider when working on your table layout – the rectangle banquet table and the round table.

Rectangle banquet tables are typically 6 or 8 feet long. Here at The Gardens, we find the 8-foot rectangle banquet tables to be the most stylish and functional, especially The Gardens Cedar Banquet Tables.

When it comes to round tables, the most common sizes are 60-inch and 72-inch. We prefer the 60-inch round tables compared to the 72-inch round tables. The wider tables make it difficult for guests to converse. The 60-inch round tables have much more potential for intimacy as they can seat six guests, if social distancing is required, or eight guests comfortably.

Some couples envision their wedding reception table layout to incorporate all rectangle banquet tables or all-round tables, but we have found a mixture of rectangle banquet tables and round tables together create the most dynamic layout. Mixing rectangle banquet tables with a handful of round tables creates a dramatic effect.

Looking to introduce your themes or wedding colors into your wedding reception space, use colored linens on the round tables to add to the visual delight of the wedding reception. As far as size, we recommend 120-inch round linens on the 60-inch round tables to create a cascading look that covers the tables’ legs. You can also use the round tables to create a seating hierarchy. For example, use the rectangle banquet tables for the majority of guests and then seat close family at round tables directly in front of the head table.

Round tables can be laid out in either a diamond or square pattern. The square layout offers more space and distancing between tables encouraging more mingling among guests. While the diamond pattern allows for a more compact layout and a higher guest count in the same space. The diamond layout allows for more of a diagonal view of the wedding reception making it better for photography. Only if the venue space has a second story or more will guests be able to see the layout from above. So, when completing your table layout in plan form having it perfectly symmetrical is not necessary.

Tablescaping a round table offers many more opportunities than a rectangle banquet table. The equal spacing from the décor or floral centerpiece to the edge of the round table creates a full dramatic effect. Plus, round tables allow for the ability to have multiple tablescapes. Remember, there is no rule stating every table must be decorated the same.

Follow these four tips for seamlessly using round tables at your wedding reception:

• Use 60-inch tables with eight guests per table.
• Utilize full length linens on round tables to incorporate wedding themes and colors.
• Customize the space by using a mixture of table shapes.
• Choose a table layout pattern, whether square or diamond, which helps create the vision for your event.

Bonus tip: Whenever working on your table layout, make sure to plan for how guests will move through and around the tables. Where are the aisles?

Do not overlook the importance that table choice and layout has on your overall wedding day. The perfect table layout creates harmony and balance helping you achieve the perfect uniquely you wedding reception.

Crisp white linens paired with a host of wild flower arrangements created a fresh outdoor feeling that was ever-so inviting.

Want a splash of romance for your dinner guests? These lovely sheen linens suited the round tables just fine!

Create an attractive visual contrast by mixing and matching the Round Reception Tables with our hand-crafted Cedar Wedding Banquet Tables.

Chandeliers, golden Chiavari chairs, purple linens, oh my! Working with a professional decorator helps your vision come to life! We’ll set up the tables, they can hang the chandeliers, Mom and Dad can enjoy your day!

When you have a mix of tables, you can have a mix of table centerpiece arrangements. Guests enjoyed admiring these fuzzy pink pumpas grass and rose reception centerpieces!

Around and around we go! Round tables, circular garlands, and a frame circling the couple made for a please aesthetic in The Gardens Wedding Reception Tent.

Utilizing round reception tables for your guests of honor (think Grandpa, Grandma, Mom & Dad) and the Cedar Wedding Banquet Tables for all of your other special guests can help them visually consider where they can sit if you have an open seating plan.

Fashioning your reception table lay-out can seem daunting, but we have a helpful system to guide you in creating a space that suits your style and your guest count.

Our 22′ Kings Harvest Head Table is such a spectacular sight – so the juxtaposition of the round reception tables surrounding the head table gave it an extra pop in the center of The Gardens Wedding Reception Tent!

Coordinating white linens on the Round Reception Tables and the Cedar Wedding Banquet Tables made the colors of these centerpieces really stand out.

You can have a minimalist-styled wedding and still provide a diverse space for your guests to be visually drawn to. Mixing The Gardens Cedar Wedding Banquet Tables and Round Reception Tables is just one more way to make your reception look intentional.

Blush-toned table linens on round reception tables, elegant rose arrangements over the head table, and little twinkle lights helped create an elegant garden wedding reception.

A reception tent full of light and a mix of rustic guest seating made for a wonderful modern and vintage inspired space here at The Gardens of Castle Rock.

Anyone that has visited The Gardens of Castle Rock knows that we love our wood… but a round reception table with a crisp linen here and there helps the wood grains become even more distinguished!

I spy a couple who decided to sit all by themselves at one of our hand-crafted Garden’s Original Cedar Sweetheart Tables.  This means their wedding party could go sit with their friends and family. Tables help with guest experience for everyone!

Just imagine sitting at your head table watching all of your friends and family gathered in intimate circles – eating, laughing, clinking glasses, sharing stories. A whimsical garden wedding theme can be envisioned and created with tables and centerpieces, but as we like to say, your guests add the magic.

Classic Elegant Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at The Gardens

Elevate the grand entrance of the bride with ceremony gate & doors for the awed admiration of the wedding guests.

Crafted in classic traditional design, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors have the ability to make time stand still. In those sweet moments as the bride readies herself behind the door to the moment of the big reveal when the doors slowly open, everyone is suspended in time.

Glenn Switzer, venue owner & designer, built his first pergola in the late 1980’s while working as a landscape designer. As a frequent traveler, Glenn explored gardens and garden structures throughout the world. To bring what he admired from aboard, Glenn laid out the former landscape nursery, now The Gardens, on the European concept of a formal garden, grid pattern with multiple walkways and access points. He also designed and built a large formal white pergola years before The Gardens was a wedding venue. Maybe it was foreshadowing or even luck, but the white garden pergola was placed in the perfect location for the future Grand Promenade ceremony spot. When it came time to design the Grand Promenade, the location of the white pergola worked perfectly as a 75’ aisle was added down the center.

But how did the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors come to be? It all started with a bride inquiring if The Gardens had any doors that could be place at the entrance of the Grand Promenade for her to have a big reveal moment with her fiancé. In one of those instances that drives Glenn’s wife crazy, Glenn replied, “We don’t have any, but we could build some!” Since the bride was having her ceremony on the Grand Promenade, the design of the gate and doors would mimic the details of the white garden pergola. However, engineering how the posts would stand-up, as well as be mobile, took a bit more pre-planning. Interested in learning how it all came together? Check out our Beautiful Wedding Ceremony Cedar Gate & Doors for The Grand Promenade YouTube video.

One of the detail Glenn really appreciates in the construction of the gate and doors is the use of the old-world style of pounding nails called clinching. It is where a nail is driven all the way through the board and support boards, bent over and driven into the wood to create a tight bond.

A fair amount of time was spent on the doors to ensure they were equal in size and shape, as well as opened evenly. To create a classic romantic look, scalloped cuts were made on the side pieces making a wide enough space for the ushers to stand on either side to open the doors. The 6-foot doors also have a rounded cascading top to ensure even the tallest bride can be completely hidden.

While the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors were designed for the Grand Promenade, it has also been used at the Lath House ceremony location. A rainstorm the morning of a wedding planned on the Grand Promenade resulted in the grass being too wet. So the amazing and flexible staff moved the ceremony gate & door to the entrance of the Lath House. Low and behold, it was an amazing fit there too! That’s what is so inspiring about The Gardens…. its chameleon-like nature that allows for your wedding style to shine through.

Designed in the same style as the Grand Promenade’s pergola, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a classic and elegant look.

Steady and ready. The bride accompanied by her dad prepare for the sweetest walk together down the aisle.

You can choose to place the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at the entrance to the Lath House or the Grand Promenade.

The ceremony concludes and the couple stroll hand in hand down the aisle and back through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors.

The wedding party assembled in front of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors in an effort to allow the bride to stay hidden until just the right moment.

While the guests file into the Grand Promenade, they too can enjoy walking through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors. But remember, it’s doors open for everyone except the bride.

Everyone’s attention is right where it should be…..the beautiful bride.

The flower girl and ring bearer as through. Now is the time for the doors to be closed for the bride’s big entrance.

Designed and built by venue owner & designer, Glenn Switzer, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors are both fully-functional and beautiful.

A couple quick fluffs and adjustments (thanks dad!) and it’s show time!

The scalloped side pieces of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors are wide enough for ushers to stand when they open the doors.

The Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a perfect frame for the bride and groom.

Last words of advice are exchanged between bride and her dad as the ceremony gate and doors are slowly opened.

Worried that your head might show while standing behind the doors prior to the big reveal? No worries, the 6 foot doors have a rounded cascading top to ensure even the tallest bride can be completely hidden.

Guests eagerly await the opening of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors to reveal the gorgeous bride.

It’s okay to get a little teary eyed at seeing the bride walk down the aisle. If you want to blame it on allergies, we won’t tell.

The new Mr. & Mrs. steal one of many kisses to come under the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors.

It’s your time to shine! I mean you are getting married and all!

When it comes to who will walk you down the aisle, the choice is yours! Some brides have dad, some mom, some both and some go it alone. It’s all about choosing what means the most to you.

You can almost feel the anticipation of the bride as she prepares to walk through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors and into a brand new chapter of her life.

The Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a welcoming vibe into the Lath House at The Gardens.

The Lath House ~ The Most Unique Wedding Ceremony Location

Minnesota’s most unique ceremony site…decades in the making

Considered the heart of The Gardens of Castle Rock, the Lath House has a long and storied history decades in the making.  In fact, the space’s uniqueness is incomparable to all other ceremony sites.

Grandpa Switzer in front of the original nursery building.

The nursery began in 1926, with one of the original nursery buildings located in the Lath House area. By the early 1950’s, a pole barn addition was constructed where the Lath House currently stands.  But in early December 1981, at the height of the Christmas tree and wreath season, a massive fire broke out in the middle of the night.  As you can probably imagine, a building filled with Christmas trees and wreaths didn’t take long to burn to the ground.  It was a total loss.  All that remained were some scorched poles on the former building’s north side.  Look closely and you can still see some of the charred remains today.

Fast forward a couple of years…… As the retail nursery continued to grow, additional display space was needed, especially for the shade loving perennials…. think hostas, pulmonaria and lilies.  Glenn’s father, Garry, quickly realized the spot where the pole barn once stood would be the perfect spot to build a shade loving perennial greenhouse.

To create the greenhouse, rows of round utility poles were set throughout the space and a 2x 4 grid pattern was constructed creating an open-air style roof.  Rolls of lath boards were then laid across the roof structure creating the perfect partially shaded space for perennials to flourish.

Early 1950’s pole barn addition.

Now you may be asking yourself….” What are lath boards exactly?” Lath is a narrow strip of straight-grained wood.  Typically used under roof shingles or tiles, on lath and plaster walls and ceilings to hold plaster, and in lattice and trellis work.  If you’ve lived in a turn of the century home and done any remodeling work, you’ve probably seen lath boards behind the plaster.

The fire that started in the Christmas Tree Room of the pole barn resulted in the building being a total loss.

The Lath Greenhouse continued to be in use until 2006 when the business transitioned out of retail nursery sales to landscaping design and construction.   To learn more about the history of The Gardens, CLICK HERE.

Over the next six years, the Lath Greenhouse was a bit neglected and forgotten as the space was not utilized for the landscaping design and construction business.

As interest in hosting wedding on the property increased, Glenn designed and built the Grand Promenade ceremony site to appeal to couples looking for a classic outdoor wedding ceremony site.  To learn more about the Grand Promenade, CLICK HERE.

During the first three venue tours, Glenn would show potential couples the Grand Promenade ceremony site.  Every single one pointed to the Lath Greenhouse and asked, “What’s that?” By the fourth tour, Glenn decided to add the Lath Greenhouse into the tour and ask couples if they would be interested in seeing the venue’s “rustic ceremony site”.  With that the Lath House ceremony site was born!

As interest grew in the Lath House, so did the love and care Glenn provided to the space. Since the Lath greenhouse structure didn’t have lath boards all the way to the entrance, Glenn began an arduous quest to locate more lath boards.  But not just any lath boards.  These needed to rustic weathered pieces attached with wire…. basically, snow fencing that had seen some long dark winters.  After being frustrated by weeks of unsuccessful searching, Glenn mentioned his dilemma to a friend who, wouldn’t you know, said, “I’ve got a bunch of old rolls you can have!” Problem solved!

The Lath House was built in 1982 to serve as a shaded retail space for perennials.

As a fluke, Glenn decided to lighten up the Lath House by hanging some leftover Christmas lights from the nursery throughout the roof structure.  Couples loved the lights so much that in 2018 the lights were replaced with over 1,100 feet of LED café lights.

The Lath House surrounded by retail nursery items circa 1986.

Now what’s with all the beautiful grape vines covering the Lath House?  We can only take partial credit for those.  The other credit goes to Mother Nature!  Wild grapes spread organically and have always been around the nursery.  In fact, take a stroll around the grounds and you will very well see them!  Since the 1980’s, there have been an abundance of native Minnesota wild grapes growing in the back of the Lath House or today what is considered the front of the space where the natural wood ceremony arch stands.  Glenn added addition winter hardy table grapes (totally edible) around the entrance of the Lath House filling it out the lush inviting look.

The black landscaping fabric that covers the ground was the original flooring used when the space was the perennial shade garden and has served its purpose well.  Glenn is currently working on a design to replace the fabric with landscape pavers to further enhance the beauty of the space.  No timeline is set, but we are excited to see the finished product.

In 2012, the first wedding ceremony was held in the Lath House.  The ceremony spot continues to be one of the most popular at The Gardens of Castle Rock.  With the ability to accommodate up to 300 guests, the versatility of the space is second to none.  While it gives off a rustic vibe, the choices of seating (black chairs, white chairs, or benches), décor, draping and floral can all change the feel making no two wedding the same……and isn’t that what being unique is all about?!

As The Gardens of Castle Rock looks to the future, we continue to look for ways to enhance the beauty of the Lath House while allowing its true essence to be sustained….one of uniqueness and beauty found nowhere else.

These modern vintage wedding decorations with blush and copper tones set on the cedar banquet tables perfectly suited this couples romantic vibes!

The cedar wedding banquet tables were created with a love of, well, wood! Knots and all!

A simple garland of greenery, white candles, elegant draping, and dramatic hanging garland was simply lovely for this outdoor garden wedding. (I spy The Garden’s 22 foot Kings Harvest Table!)

What’s the Most Important Reason for having a Professional Day-of Coordinator?

There are a lot of details and decisions to manage on your wedding day.  Why not leave it to a professional Day-of Coordinator so you can have Your Best Day Ever!

When you think of your upcoming wedding day do you envision a stress-free event with no hiccups and every detail executed to perfection?

The moment has arrived for your walk down the aisle…..your Day-of Coordinator has ensured everything is set.

For many couples, this isn’t the case as they rely on a family member or friend to step into a coordinator position.

Day-of Coordinators know how to get things rolling….making sure the bridal party is lined up and ready to go.

The problem is your family member or friend will run themselves ragged making sure every detail is taken care of causing them to miss out on your celebration.

Take the stress out of the day and leave all the details to a professional day-of coordinator and the only thing left for you to do is enjoy your BEST DAY EVER! Having a professional day-of coordinator keeps timelines running smoothly from start to finish. From coordinating vendors and managing setup details to handing unexpected last-minute changes, an experienced coordinator works behind the scenes, so you can stay present with your family and friends.

We asked some of the premier day-of coordinators in the Twin Cities what the most important aspect of having a professional day-of coordinator was.  Here is what they said……

Amber from Amber Terese Weddings & Events

Amber Terese Events:Having a professional day-of coordinator gives you the ability to be completely in the moment with your family, friends, and your guests. A coordinator gives you the precious gift of TIME. It gives you someone to direct guests and vendors to with questions, it allows you to release the control to someone who you trust but also makes it so that your Mom isn’t stuck answering all the questions, or your Dad isn’t dealing with the vendors. Most professionals will handle light set up, and deal with all of your vendors as well. A reputable coordinator has experience on his or her side. A professional will know how to fix numerous situations on a single wedding day, because something WILL go wrong. The main goal of most professional coordinators is to make sure that the couple and the guests never know when/if that happens. We fix things. We love making sure people are well taken care of.”

Brittany from Bella Mystique

Bella Mystique: “The most important aspect of having a day of coordinator is being able to have a trusted professional that knows you and your event assist with finalizing, organizing, setting up and executing your event exactly as you planned, while you enjoy this memorable time with one another, family and friends.

The last two months prior to your wedding can get chaotic and stressful. While you are trying to track down last RSVPs, communicate details to vendors, make final decisions and keep everyone and everything organized, it can really put a damper on what the celebration is truly about. Hiring a day of coordinator allows you to full enjoy your day. Vendor correspondence, timelines and direction, event set up and tying up any last-minute details are covered by someone you can trust, has the experience on how a successful event should go and can be available if any unforeseen hiccups should occur.”

Melody from Events By Melody

Events By Melody: “It’s your wedding day. This only happens once in a lifetime, right?! By hiring a professional day of coordinator for your big day, that allows you to focus on just one thing… being the bride and groom, of course! The last thing you need the weeks leading up to your wedding is to be creating a detailed wedding day timeline, distributing it to vendors, being the point-person for your vendors, wedding party and guests on your wedding day, setting up and tearing down décor on your wedding day and more. Let the pros handle it so you, your family and friends can enjoy your wedding day!”

Dana from Keyed Up Events

Keyed Up Events: “A professional Day-of Coordinator can be a huge asset for your wedding day. They are incredibly skilled in managing the day and making on-the-spot decisions based on their experience and what will work best for the situation. They do not get caught up in family conversations or photos because they are there to work. A Day-of Coordinator knows how to get the most out of your other vendors to ensure they are all working together. And most importantly, their goal is to make sure their clients (the couple) are happy and enjoying the day, with no other motives or prejudices. A professional Day-of Coordinator can be the best gift a couple can give themselves, their wedding party and their families.”

Lindsay from Opulent Events

Opulent Events: “Weddings can be stressful but having a day-of-coordinator takes so much stress away from the couple and even the guests! Think of it as your personal assistant that will do just about anything to make your wedding perfect. From shielding the bride from the rain, preventing the caterer from being late, letting a guest borrow your extra pair of shoes because her heels broke, ensuring that you eat and drink something and don’t pass out, wrangling rowdy groomsmen, keeping your champagne glass full, directing guests to the bathroom, even cleaning up glass from those wildly dancing arms that can’t keep their pint glass in their hand. Sure, we put all the beautiful details together on the wedding day, but we make your wedding day truly stress free. Don’t worry, coordinators are magicians, but you are the bride and groom today, not tomorrow. Let us handle the stress for you.”

Erica from Piece of Cake Wedding Planning

Piece of Cake Wedding Planning: “Working with a professional day-of coordinator ensures you’ll have an expert by your side throughout your entire planning journey; who knows what questions to ask, when certain tasks should be completed, keeps you on task and ahead of schedule to minimize planning stress, and can provide personalized suggestions and tips based on you, your fiancé and your wedding vision. Most importantly, working with a wedding coordinator gives you the gift of time because they will handle every wedding day detail, ensuring that you’ll be fully present and enjoying every minute of your wedding day! It goes fast enough as it is – trust me – you don’t want to miss it!”

Kellie from Rustic Elegance

Rustic Elegance: “We at Rustic Elegance think the most important aspect of hiring a professional Day-of-Coordinator to help with your wedding is to ease the amount of stress on you, your friends and family. By hiring an experienced professional, you will have a main contact for the day that can tie/link all the vendors together, someone who will keep track of all the moving parts and also will ensure plans stay on schedule. You are including someone who can anticipate areas where problems could arise and who asks the important questions ahead of time to ensure things go smoothly. Your Day-of-Coordinator will be there to help execute every last small detail and make sure your vision for the day comes to life. If problems do come up, like a change in weather, they are there to make any adjustments as needed. You plan for months and months and maybe even years for your wedding day and the day goes by way to fast to be worried about all the details on the actual day. Let a professional [like Rustic Elegance] do this for you so you can enjoy being with your friends and family and most of all concentrate on MARRYING the love of your life!!”

Heads Up! Hanging Flowers at Your Wedding

Heads Up! Hanging Flowers at Your Wedding

Let the beauty rise above it all… Flowers are popping up everywhere!

Jessa & Alex at The Gardens of Castle Rock - Minnesota Nature Inspired WeddingThe latest floral design trend explores an unexpected frontier: Look, up above! Not a bird, not a plane, but flowers!

Formerly the domain of lights and lanterns, hanging floral accents are increasingly making dramatic statements at wedding venues. A quick online search reveals hanging floral features ranging from simple, rustic and modest to incredibly lavish and over-the-top. Explore all those gorgeous images and maybe you’ll see something perfect for your big day.Jessa & Alex at The Gardens of Castle Rock - Minnesota Nature Inspired Wedding

Many iterations on the theme depend on a container. We love those clear glass orbs often used with air plants. Hang by a ribbon or fishing line, and tuck a single rose, peony or orchid in each. Intersperse votive candles in some of them, and give them away to guests at the end of the party. Mason jars wrapped with wire, ribbon or beads can hang above tables holding small bouquets. Clear or colored wine bottles also make pretty vases, and a DIY enthusiast can make dozens of attractive hanging vases from light bulbs.

Pomanders are trending. Echoing the shape of a tissue pompom and named after the fragrant clove-studded orange beloved at Christmas, florists are crafting beautiful monochromatic orbs of tightly packed flowers, or looser spheres exploding with baby’s breath. If you’ve got access to a few hydrangea bushes, you can approximate this look with simple hydrangea crowns dangling above.

Vertical strands of flowers make a beautiful backdrop for the ceremony, the cake or photos. They can also cascade from the ceiling in a wash of color. A truly show-stopping option is a cascading wisteria-style installation. These trailing florals create a soft, garden-like canopy overhead, adding movement and elegance to a space like a ceremony aisle.

Continuous garlands in the tradition of Indian temple decorations and Hawaiian leis are one option, or attach flower heads to clear fishing line at intervals for a transparent floating effect. Using a range of shades of one color enables a lovely ombre effect.Shannon & Jeran at The Gardens of Castle Rock - Minnesota Wedding & Event Center

For a simple, elegant, floating look, tulips and certain other long-stemmed flowers can be hung over wires or chandeliers, right where the stem meets a leaf. Add a touch of sparkle with some hanging crystals or lights, or switch to a culinary angle with plump bunches of green and red grapes with ivy.

If you incline toward rustic refined, consider a hanging shelf made of a weathered board. Vases and candles can be secured on top, or flowers can be arranged right on top, cascading over the edges. Bring a woodland effect to the arrangement with driftwood, moss, ferns, leaves and curly willow. Another attractive vintage accessory: the birdcage, oozing and overflowing with flowers.

Lighted garlands of greens or flowers, attached to the structural components of the tent, lend a festive Midsummer’s Night Dream effect to the party. Echo the theme with horizontal hanging wreaths of ivy topped with votives.

Michelle & Brian at The Gardens of Castle Rock ~ Minnesota Garden Wedding PartyTalented florists can craft large inverted arrangements in virtually any style, from geometrical and compact to lavish tangles of blooms–perhaps to set the head table off from the rest of the room, without obstructing sight lines like a traditional table-top arrangement.Michelle & Brian at The Gardens of Castle Rock ~ Minnesota Garden Wedding Party

Enhance any of these eye-catching up-above arrangements with other hanging attractions. Edison bulbs, lanterns, crystals, jewels, paper parasols, paper fans and origami cranes can all provide an extra pop of color or texture in your heads-up decor.

Cherish Design… we love when couples get creative with their decor. Especially floral, after all it is The Gardens.   Contact The Gardens it you want to take your wedding experience up a notch!
