A Perfect Blend: Charming Timber-Built Covered Structure for Your Open-Air Outdoor Wedding

It all started with a tree—a towering heirloom Scotch pine that stood at the center of The Gardens for more than 80 years. It wasn’t just any tree; it became a symbol of the land, representing the nursery and landscape company that once thrived here. Over the years, it quietly witnessed countless transformations, including the biggest one of all—when the space evolved into a wedding venue. Naturally, the tree became a beloved backdrop for ceremonies, standing tall and proud in family photos and memories alike. To us, it wasn’t just part of the landscape—it was part of our story.

But as time passed, the tree began to show signs of decline. The question became: “How could we honor something that had meant so much to so many?” Glenn, with his deep love of timber framing and a new bandsaw added to The Workshop, saw potential in the tree’s final chapter. After examining every branch and curve, it became clear that no piece was straight enough for traditional framing. That’s when inspiration struck—the old-world elegance of a cruck frame, a style dating back to the 13th century that celebrates curved timbers. What followed was a blend of engineering, creativity, and reverence. Glenn and a team of skilled timber framers spent weeks sketching, measuring, and studying the tree’s natural form. The process required a hybrid French and English method of scribing the limbs and timber, laser precision, and the kind of problem-solving that only comes with experience—and a deep respect for the material.

In winter, the team gathered to cut and join the frame in The Workshop, a process that took 11 days of intense craftsmanship. While power tools helped shape the pieces, it was the hand tools—chisels, saws, and mallets—that brought out the frame’s soul. Each timber was a puzzle piece with its own personality. Then, in spring, the real magic happened. Footings were poured, dimensions double-checked, and the pre-assembled cruck bents were lifted into place, just 25 feet from where the tree had once grown. Somehow, through all the curves and challenges, everything fit—perfectly.

Today, the cruck frame stands as the ceremonial gateway to the Lath House wedding site. It’s more than a structure; it’s a tribute, a piece of living history made from a tree that had already touched so many lives. With delicate lights strung across its rafters and hand-carved details that only the keenest eyes notice, it adds whimsy and wonder to every wedding. For most guests, it’s simply beautiful. But for those who truly understand timber framing—the woodworkers, the builders, the cabinetmakers – it’s a quiet marvel. They see the complexity in the curves, the joinery, the choices made to preserve the tree’s natural form.

And that’s what makes it so special. The tree lives on—not just in the wood, but in every ceremony, every photo, and every memory created beneath it. What once stood as a symbol of a business now stands as a celebration of love, transformation, and timeless craftsmanship.

So why is it called a Cruck Frame? Because curved timbers (called crucks) are used as the primary structural support, forming an A-frame shape from the ground to the roof peak. Photo credit: RKH Images

Wedding Reception Head Table Ideas: The Tuscan Head Table

The long, graceful form of the Tuscan Head Table harmonizes perfectly with The Gardens’ lush outdoor spaces, charming architecture, and natural beauty. Inspired by the rustic elegance of Italy’s Tuscany region, the Tuscan head table is a long, rectangular dining table traditionally found in Italian countryside villas. The style emphasizes communal dining, natural materials, and warm, inviting aesthetics. Often crafted from reclaimed wood or richly stained hardwoods, a Tuscan head table typically features simple, timeless lines and enough space to seat the couple, their bridal party, or close family members together. Its origins are deeply rooted in Italian culture, where meals are a central gathering point for connection and celebration.

The Tuscan head table beautifully balances sophistication with intimacy. Unlike the more traditional sweetheart table, the Tuscan style encourages interaction among the wedding party and fosters a feeling of unity and shared joy. Its generous size allows for personalized styling—like garlands of greenery, candles, and antique dinnerware—that enhances the overall theme of the wedding. It also provides a visually stunning focal point in the reception space, making it ideal for toasts, speeches, and candid moments that are both memorable and photogenic.

8 Meaningful Ways to Honor a Loved One on Your Wedding Day

Wedding days are joyous occasions, filled with loved ones from far and near. Weddings also remind us of the loved ones who are no longer present, and of the fragility of time. If you’re looking for ways to honor or remember loved ones on your wedding day, whether they have passed or are still with us, we’ve put together a list to help as you plan your special day.

1 – Memory Table – A memory table is a classic way to honor and remember those who are no longer present on your wedding day. Whether you use one of the Gardens Cedar Wedding Mid-Height Tables, a cocktail table, or even the mantle on our Natural Stone Fireplace, displaying photos of loved ones is a wonderful way to have them present on your day. Another variation on a memory table is the theme “generations of love,” where you display a wedding photo from every other couple in your family, both as a tribute and a walk down memory lane.

2 – A Special Role for Grandparents – Grandparents love to be included on wedding days! Whether you have them act as “flower grannies” or ring bearers, invite them to play music at your reception, or ask them to make their famous dessert for after dinner, we can guarantee that they will be absolutely honored to be involved.

3 – Play Their Song + Have a Dance – Is there a song that reminds you of your loved one, whether it’s a favorite of theirs or one you sang together? Play it at your reception! Depending on the song, you can either opt for a moment of silence for everyone to remember together, or have everyone crowd the dance floor and rock out to their song.

4 – Reserve Seats at the Ceremony and/or Reception – Reserve a seat or seats in honor of loved ones who have passed, at your ceremony, reception, or both. You can include photographs, or just a simple sign. Whatever feels best for you.

5 – Include a Memento on Your Bouquet or Boutonniere – Want to carry a loved one with you as you walk down the aisle? Consider including a small memento with your ceremony florals. Small charms or photographs are easy to attach to bouquets or boutonnieres, and help you to keep your loved one close as you say “I do” to the love of your life.

6 – Remember Them in Your Speech or Toast – Speeches and toasts are great opportunities to honor loved ones who’ve shaped your life and remember those who are gone. Whether you raise a glass to toast someone who has passed, or thank loved ones in a speech for their support on your day, a simple statement is a thoughtful way to offer acknowledgment.

7 – Food/Drink – If someone special in your life is known for having a favorite food or drink, consider including it in your reception festivities! Offer a signature cocktail in honor of a loved one who has passed, or ask a friend or family member to make their famous sweet treat as a dessert for your wedding.

8 – Classic Car – Does a loved one, past or present, have a wicked cool ride? Use it in your wedding photos, or as a getaway car! Classic cars never go out of style, and make the perfect prop for photos. And at the end of the night, you can depart with fashionable flair as your as your guests cheer you on.

2025 Wedding Trends: What We’re Seeing & Loving

In 2025, couples will be embracing a wedding style inspired by the timeless beauty of old-world charm. This trend merges the elegance of vintage European aesthetics with the casual, joyful ambiance of a garden party. It’s all about creating a dreamy, sophisticated atmosphere with subtle touches of fairytale romance and understated decadence.

The old-world style thrives in spaces that feature weathered stonework, vintage elements, and lush natural surroundings.

Imagine floral arrangements that look freshly picked from an 18th-century English garden, with cascading blooms and textured greenery. The color palette centers around soft pinks, lavender blush, and gentle peach tones, accented by an array of rich, natural greens.

Understanding that visuals speak louder than words, The Gardens partnered with top wedding professionals to showcase this enchanting style through photos. From lush floral installations to intricately detailed tablescapes, couples can see how old-world charm comes to life in every detail.

The Knot Best of Weddings: The Gardens of Castle Rock

Makayla & Scott

“The Gardens was one of our favorite details of our wedding day! The staff are so friendly, easy to work with, and responsive. The grounds are absolutely GORGEOUS and we received so many compliments from our guests about our venue!! Everything went smoothly the day of the wedding. I couldn’t recommend them enough!!”

Fallon & Dante

“The Gardens of Castle Rock were amazing from beginning to end. The grounds are amazing, offering 4 unique and beautiful spots to have your ceremony along with an amazing tent set up for the reception. From booking the venue through the wedding date, Glenn and his team are very prepared and have great open lines of communication to answer all questions and problems that may arise. We wanted to do something a little different for our cocktail hour and the team worked with us to make sure our vision came to fruition. They communicate really well with your other vendors, as well which added a level of comfort to the whole process. The beauty of the grounds can’t be understated, that along with the great communication along the way made my wife and I very happy to have chosen The Gardens of Castle Rock for our special day.”

“The staff of The Gardens were very attentive throughout our wedding planning process. They performed excellently day-of and worked well with all of our vendors…. The venue itself is also lovely….. We had a good experience hosting our wedding at The Gardens and would recommend it to other couples.”

Ruthie & Alex

“We were extremely lucky to have had our wedding at The Gardens of Castle Rock this past September. I can’t say enough about the team and the venue itself. ….. Everyone was responsive, super kind, thorough, respectful of our decisions, and they got excited right along with us. The pictures online don’t do this place justice and having space for everyone on site all day was a game changer..… The team here has worked with tons of wedding vendors in MN and had great recommendations. Their professionalism and reputation in the wedding business showed when all the vendors had (unprovoked) great things to say…. I’m so grateful we were able to spend our wedding here and I hope we have more chances to go to events here in the future!”

Shivani & Aaron

“The Gardens was a great venue to have our multicultural wedding with multiple ceremonies! Since you have access to the entire venue, we got to use the Grand Promenade for the Indian ceremony, the Lath House for the American ceremony, the lawn for games and reception tent for the reception along with their fireplace and the pizza bar. Perfect setting for an outdoor garden vibe, we had our own decorations, but honestly the place doesn’t need much as it has been tended with a lot of love by the owner. Great venue for an amazing day!”

“The Gardens of Castle Rock exceeded all of our expectations. From planning to setting up to executing, they did the most amazing job. They made our wedding day magical and stress free. Lastly, all the workers and owner were wonderful and very helpful. I would highly recommend them for anyone getting married.”

“I just got married three weeks ago at this beautiful place! The staff were so amazing and so accommodating! We couldn’t have picked a better place to get married!! All of my guest just thought the place was absolutely beautiful!”

Anna & Julia

“This venue was everything that we wanted. We had a beautiful fall wedding and they made sure that we had everything we needed and helped us keep organized which was really nice! Highly recommend this venue.”

Marilyn, Mother of Bride

“The Gardens of Castle Rock was everything we were hoping for my daughter’s September wedding. The wedding was planned long distance, and it was perfect. As mother-of-the bride I would get progress reports from my daughter. She had only great things to say about Kris and Tami. The planning process and communications with them ensured my daughter and her fiancé experienced their wedding their way. Glenn and his team (Michelle!) worked behind the scenes so that everything ran smoothly. There was no drama, there were no surprises. The bride and groom knew they were in good hands. The accommodations, vendors, accessibility, and natural beauty at The Gardens of Castle Rock made an already wonderful day even more memorable!”

Fun & Festive Drinks for an Unforgettable Wedding Reception

No matter what you plan on drinking at your wedding, your bar will be one of the most important parts of your wedding day. Regardless of whether you’re planning a menu of signature cocktails or spicing things up with some snazzy mocktails, your guests will be thirsty – especially if your wedding is outdoors during the summer. Alcohol is often a wedding staple, but even if you’re planning a dry event, we highly recommend hiring a bar service to provide your guests with juice, soft drinks, and, most importantly, water! Thirsty guests are not happy guests, and you want everyone at your wedding to have an absolute blast! No matter what kind of vibe you’re looking to curate with your bar, we’ve amassed a smattering of inspo pics to help you in your planning journey. Our Garden Pavilion and patio area with the Natural Stone Fireplace, are the perfect backdrop for toasting to the happy couple, no matter what you’re drinking! So grab a glass of your favorite beverage, put your feet up, and scroll through some of the best bar setups we’ve seen. Cheers!

Did you know that you can have a mixed cash and open bar? Some people think that their bar needs to be either all cash or completely open. This isn’t the case! You can have an open bar for the first hour of your reception, and then cash for the rest of the night, or do a cash bar for cocktails, but an open bar for wine and beer. Whatever suits your event best! Photo Credit: Kelsey Bellows Photography
