The Grindbygg Inspired Covered Pergola: An Impressive & Unique Wedding Guest Experience

This hand-crafted, modern rustic pergola adds industrial charm and functionality to your outdoor wedding experience.

The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola is a picture perfect spot for a gorgeous October wedding day. Andrea Dobbs Photography

I bet the first question you’re asking yourself is, “What is a Grindbygg?” We’re glad you asked! Grindbygg is a traditional post construction style originating in Norway between the 1500’s through the 1800’s. The idea to build a Grindbygg inspired covered pergola came from a timber frame installation workshop Glenn attended at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN.

Glenn considers the structure to be inspired because instead of using the typical Grindbygg style of wood pegs he used large, galvanized lag bolts as the fasteners. Positioned near the entrance of the wedding reception patio, the four large cedar log posts were salvaged from a local tree removal company, while the rafters were salvaged from white pine logs and milled onsite. What’s most notable are the two large wall plates that Glenn was able to salvage from a 60-year-old tree his grandfather had planted. The repurposing of trees into structures has always been important to Glenn and to the legacy of The Gardens.

The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola is a beautiful structure and one of ten wood structures, like the Garden Pavilion, located throughout the venue.

While the material and the building process of the Grindbygg inspired pergola is interesting, it’s functionality as a one stop shop for couples to display their guestbook and gifts/cards that’s important. Not to mention, its covered roof provides protection from the sun’s rays and sometimes even a few stray raindrops for the items displayed underneath on a Mid-Height Table.

And let’s not forget the most important fact! The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola makes an amazing backdrop for photos!

If you’re interested in learning more about the construction process of the Grindbygg inspired covered pergola, check out the YouTube series.

The ambient lighting of The Garden’s reception space is a definite experience. From the glow of the lighting on of the Grindbygg inspired covered pergola and Garden Pavilion, to the natural light of a crackling fire, your reception space will feel warm and inviting.

The Grindbygg inspired covered pergola creates a perfect one-stop-shop for guests to sign the guestbook and drop off their card or gift. Bonus, since it’s covered, it also protects the important items displayed underneath. Photo by: Moore Photography

Create a Wedding Reception Table Layout: 200-300 Guests

Arranging Your Reception Table Design to Suit Your Large Guest Count

You’ve just jumped into planning a wedding! Que the wedding invitation designs, table décor, Pinterest boards, wedding dress decisions, and table layout designs! That’s right. Here at The Gardens of Castle Rock, you get to design your own tent layout for your large guest count.

While this may seem like a daunting task, we are here to help! Before you jump into your tent layout design for 200-300 guests, we highly recommend you check out our previous blog which covered assigned versus open seating plans, as well as how to use our tent layout tool. It’s important that you know this information before beginning to design your tent layout for a larger wedding. Click here to check out this blog.

If you’ve already been there and done that…….Welcome! We’re excited to hear that you have so many loved ones ready to party the night away in the Wedding Reception Tent.

Designing a tent layout for a large wedding guest count means there are some important factors to consider to help with crowd control, but also in complimenting your unique wedding palette and theme. Let’s chat about these things first, and then we will share some tent layouts that have worked well.

Consider the Flow of Traffic for Your Wedding Guests

First things first, we need to move your guests from Point A to Point B. Consider this:

1) Start with an aisle! That’s right… You need to plan for two aisles to walk on your wedding day! Think of the aisle in your reception area as a main highway. Make sure you have one clear “highway” aisle that will take your guests effortlessly through the tent with “side streets” that lead them to their table.

2) Make an entrance. Tables right in front of the entrance of the tent will stop guests before they even enter. Make sure you leave at least a 10′ x 10′ area as guests enter if possible. If this isn’t possible (usually for guest counts over 275), make sure there is an aisle to keep guests moving through the tent.

3) Think: Movement. It may seem tempting to connect all of the cedar banquet tables in a long line to save space, but now guests will need to walk a long distance before being able to “cut through” to the next row or aisle. We suggest connecting a maximum of 2 or 3 cedar banquet tables then leave a space wide enough for someone to pass through.

4) Mix and match. Utilize both the Garden’s Cedar Banquet Tables and Round Reception Tables. Using all round reception tables may take up too much room for a guest count of 250+. Cedar Banquet Tables tend to take up less room, so place as many as you can before compensating with round tables.

5) Assign Seating. Assigned seating or assigned tables helps maximize on reception space. Open seating for your reception means you’ll need to plan for extra tables (see our previous blog on open versus assigned seating). Assigned seating or tables means less tables taking up valuable walking space!

Will My Reception Tables Need to be Broken Down?

At The Gardens of Castle Rock, it is more likely that tables will need to be removed from the dance area when there is a reception guest count of 230+ guests. While our table layout tool has a suggested dance area to try to avoid, we often remove a couple tables in this area to make more room for your Uncle Bob and Aunt Betty to bust a move later. For this reason, here are some things to think about:

1) Only round reception tables can be placed in the dance area as they are easy to fold up and roll out.

2) If a guest will be assigned to a table that will be broken down later in the evening, make sure they are aware that it will be disappearing. A simple sign on the table helps! On that note…

Sometimes surprises are fun, and sometimes they aren’t. Guests love a heads up if their table will be broken down.

3) Guests sitting at tables that will be broken down need to have ample time to eat. If they are the last to receive their food, they may not have time to really enjoy their meal. Consider this while assigning table numbers.

Do I Have Enough Space For Any Extras Such as Risers or a Photo Booth?

Again, this has everything to do with how many guests you are planning for, what tables you would like to use, and whether you elect for assigned or open seating. As we discussed in our previous blog, place these items in the order of importance. If the photo booth can only be placed in the reception tent, then place this in the tent first before placing tables.

If it’s really important to you that your head table is lofted on the risers, make sure you plan the risers in first before placing any other tables. You may find that there isn’t enough space for your entire wedding party to be on risers. Consider placing just you, your sweetie and a sweetheart table on the risers with your wedding party on either side.

We, of course, are here to help with suggestions! We want your reception space to be filled with your loved ones AND your favorite wedding reception must haves.

Is There Room for Dinner and Dancing in The Reception Tent?

Yes and yes! There is even space for a band if necessary! Please note that if you have a guest count of 250+ guests, your dance area and DJ and/or Band will need to be set up at the far side of the tent (East Side by the cedar wood wall).

Breaking down tables means extra room for dancing! Photo by: Jeff Dose Photography

Consider the Season

We are invested in keeping your guests cool during the hotter months and warmer during the colder months. Generally speaking, you should plan for the tent sides to be on during mid-May, the end of September, and all of October.

When the tent sides are on, our heat is also on! Talk to your Wedding Set-Up Lead at The Gardens of Castle Rock to avoid placing tables in front of where these heat sources will be. We know your guests’ comfort is a priority and we don’t want anyone to get too toasty.

You deserve to be cozy on your wedding day. Cozy in a heated tent. Cozy in your sweetie’s arms. Photo by: Audrey Nicole Photography

Renee & John’s Glorious Minnesota October Wedding

Real Wedding Spotlight: Picturesque Fall Garden Wedding with Gorgeous Flower Arrangements, Modern Rustic Reception Décor, and Stunning Autumn Views.

Renee and John’s love story started with poetry. They met during a Latin poetry class freshman year at the University of Minnesota in Rochester. Their friendship blossomed during a class trip to Greece and when they got back to Rochester, they decided that maybe there was a little more than friendship blooming. When things became even more serious, they adopted their adorable dog, Noodle, who isn’t one to say “No” to a hiking trail, neither do Renee and John. In fact, when they got engaged and first visited The Gardens of Castle Rock, they asked if there was a walking trail nearby and we were happy to point them in the direction of Whitetail Woods. They are adventurous, adorable, and aglow with love for each other.

Saturday, October 8th of 2022 was a perfect fall day in Northfield, Minnesota for an outdoor wedding. As the sun came up and the morning dew began to clear, Renee and John’s family and friends began to arrive at The Gardens of Castle Rock. There was a definite air of excitement as Renee’s bridesmaids set-up in The Garden’s Suite for hair and makeup with LHN Beauty. After Renee stepped into her gorgeous gown from The Wedding Shoppe with help from her lovely mother, Renee enjoyed an emotional first look with her bridesmaids. Images by Nic was right there to capture these raw moments along with the couple’s wedding day details including Renee’s gorgeous ring from Filigree Jewelers. Meanwhile, John hung out with his wedding party and then took a quiet moment to open a gift from Renee outside of The Garden’s Cottage.

The morning set-up began when Renee and John’s phenomenal coordinator Heidi, with the Jenna Culley Events Team, arrived. There were lights to string, florals to be hung, and décor to be placed. Let’s go! Ultimate Events set to work hanging white chiffon draping and twinkle lights in the tent. They also strung black bistro lights throughout the reception patio space and along the walkway to the ceremony space. We have to admit that we couldn’t get enough of Wilderland Floral’s arrangements. The beautiful warm floral hues throughout Renee’s wedding bouquet and John’s boutonnière, The Lath House’s ceremony arch, and The Garden’s Reception Space were unbelievable. Renee and John’s Cedar Sweetheart Table was a floral wonderland and a definite highlight of the 2022 season.

Renee and John snuck away for a private first look in The Woods where they were later joined by their energetic wedding party. (Seriously, they were definite wedding party goals.) They looked amazing in the mixture of royal blue groomsmen suits by Bill’s Toggery and mixtures of red and orange toned bridesmaid dresses. The sun was just beginning it’s decent to the west when guests began to arrive for Renee and John’s wedding ceremony in The Lath House. As Renee and John exchanged kind and heartfelt vows, Leanne with Paint My Wedding Day was right there to capture the magic of their ceremony. We will never forget the joyful feeling that radiated throughout The Gardens as Renee and John were first announced as Mr. and Mrs. Brigham!

Their reception was filled with the cool sounds of a live jazz band, delicious food by Deco Catering, yummy drinks (from margaritas to warm apple cider) provided by Liquidmotion, mouth-watering desserts from Ganache Desserts and Confections, and a dance floor filled with laughter, singing, and dancing thanks to DJ Hunter Quinn. Renee and John even snuck away for sunset photos and some time to take in the moment as our Gardens staff fired up the woodfired pizza oven for some late night snacks. We are incredibly grateful to have been a part of Renee and John’s dream day!

Renee and John toured The Gardens of Castle Rock in January… Let’s just say The Lath House looked very different! R & J were able to see past the icicles that this was the perfect Outdoor Garden Ceremony location for them.

Check out this stunning nature themed wedding ceremony arch floral installation by Wilderland Floral.

The cedar benches look lovely in The Lath House, but if you need a front row for your immediate family and friends (or relatives that need back support), no problem!

The Fireplace at The Gardens is not only fun, but a great way to keep guests toasty warm for an Outdoor Wedding in October. With the added bistro lights by Ultimate Events, it was the perfect wedding guest hang out spot.

Unsolicited advice from this Minnesota Outdoor Wedding Venue: Laughter is the best medicine for wedding nerves… and the best way to remember the day forever. Also, have a great photographer like Images by Nic to capture the joy.

“[The Gardens of Castle Rock] was absolutely perfect for us and was the first and best decision we made planning our 120-person wedding. It was important to us while planning during COVID to have an outdoor venue and plenty of space for our guests… We had our ceremony in the Lath house, which was absolutely stunning in early October… The property had a lot of great spaces for photos, and everyone was raving about how beautiful it was. We wholeheartedly recommend The Gardens of Castle Rock and the amazing team!” ~ Renee and John Brigham

Create a Wedding Reception Table Layout: 100-200 Guests

Open Seating or Assigned Seating? Traditional Head Table or King’s Table? The Choice is Yours!

Creating a comfortable, relaxing, and engaging guest experience for your wedding guests is a top priority for your wedding day. A key factor to your overall wedding reception aesthetic is the table layout design and seating arrangements. It’s an exciting and, we’ll admit, challenging part of the planning process, but absolutely necessary when determining the overall feel of the space.

The Gardens’ Square Cedar Sweetheart (say that 5 times fast…) has lots of space for décor and YOU. Photo by Studio KH

At The Gardens of Castle Rock, you get to design your own reception tent layout with our tent layout tool. If you are one of our current couples, you’ve come to the right place for extra guidance. We hope this blog serves as a helpful tool as you design the space of your dreams! If you’re just here to learn more about creating a wedding reception seating design – welcome! We are a southern Minnesota wedding venue just north of Northfield, MN that loves to share insights on wedding planning and hosting an outdoor wedding!

We’re going to provide you with insight to reception assigned or open seating, break down the process of designing your unique Gardens Tent Layout with the Tent Layout Tool, and then provide some examples of seating charts for 100 to 200 guests. Phew! This blog is going to be fun, so let’s jump in!

Table shape and placement matters! Using all round tables would mean a sea of light blue linens; whereas, mixing in Cedar Banquet Tables with light blue napkins created an illusion of friendly polka dots. Photo by Studio KH

Should I have Assigned or Open Seating at My Wedding Reception?

First, before you tackle your reception table layout, you need to decide between assigned seating or open seating. This question may seem minor, but it makes a big difference in design and guest experience! Let’s talk pros and considerations for each seating option…

Should we have Assigned Seating or Tables for our wedding reception?

Pros: Assigned seating helps a reception feel more organized and intentional. Guests will feel more at ease because they don’t have to rush to the reception area to “claim” seating for their family. Even if you have under 100 guests attending, a seating chart optimizes your space and fills every seat.

Something to consider: Creating a seating chart can be hard work and you’re not going to make 100% of your guests happy with your seating choices for them. Make sure you employ the help of your day-of coordinator and parents when deciding who should sit near who and whether you should designate assigned chairs or just assigned tables.

Have fun with your wedding seating chart! This Military Themed Wedding used the NATO phonetic alphabet instead of table numbers. Photo by Studio KH

Should we have Open Seating for our wedding reception?

Pros: Open seating benefits you because, let’s face it, seating charts can get complicated and expensive. It can also prevent guests from getting offended when you place them next to your cousin’s political plus one. Open seating gives your guests an opportunity to sit next to who they really want to sit by and saves you the headache of trying to figure out just who that is.

Something to consider: Make sure you provide extra tables and chairs so that your guests can find seats together. Remember, a group of 2 people won’t always go fill the 2 empty spots at a table with strangers. Chances are, they’ll go to a completely open table. We suggest at least one extra table for every 100 guests (or 4-6 extra place settings per 100 guests).

You will need extra seating for an open seating plan – which means there will be a couple spots that are empty. Make sure to factor in extra silverware and glassware when talking with your caterer or bar service!

Design Your Reception Tent Layout

Now that you’ve thought about assigned or open seating, it’s arts and crafts date night time! Grab your tent layout, cut out some tables, and let’s get started.

Follow this order when deciding the placement of tables:

1) Place party add-on tables such as photo booths, memory tables, and dessert tables. We recommend using The Gardens Mid-Height tables for your special add-ons so that the reception tables can be used for your guests.

It will take your guests time to find their name on the seating chart, so make sure you leave plenty of floor space for a group of guests to congregate. Photo By Hayley Houtari Photography

2) Decide on your table preference. At The Gardens of Castle Rock, you can choose from our 8′ hand-crafted cedar banquet tables or 60″ round tables. The cedar banquet tables bring a unique and rustic elegance to the table (see what we did there?) while the round reception tables are considered more traditional and can add color to your reception space (as a note, round tables require a linen). Feel free to mix and match, too! If you find that you’ve used all 20 of our 8′ cedar banquets, a couple round tables up by the head table are perfect for your parents, grandparents or special guests.

Assigned chairs can be a lot of work, but will help your guests feel more at ease knowing they don’t have to hurry to save their own seats. Photo by Rachel Graff Photography

3) Calculate the number of tables needed. It’s time to get out the ol’ calculator and do some math. For example, let’s say you have chosen reserved tables for 144 guests, you will need 18 tables. If you have chosen open seating, we would suggest 20 tables.

4) Choose your seat! This is the fun part! Choose what style of head table you would like, and place it on the tent layout. Feel free to have fun with this. Need some inspiration? Check out: The Gardens Sweetheart Table, The Garden’s Original Rustic Refined Table, The Kings Harvest Table

Can I sit with all 22 of my friends at the head table? Here at The Gardens of Castle Rock, you can! Check out The Kings Harvest Table here! Photo by Bella Cuattura Studios

5) Give VIPs special treatment. Your parents, grandparents or special friends deserve a front row seat for dinner service, wedding toasts and first dances. Make sure to place their tables nearby your head table.

6) Arrange the remaining tables. It’s time to make your reception space unique to you! We can’t wait to see what you have designed. Need some inspiration? We thought you’d never ask…

What If It Rains On My Wedding Day? 7 Helpful Insights

The Gardens of Castle Rock Embraces the Rain and We’re Here to Help on Your Wedding Day.

“Grab an umbrella, Grandma! We’re getting married in the rain!” Photo Credit: Tessa June Photography

As an outdoor wedding venue in Minnesota, The Gardens of Castle Rock is no stranger to precipitation. We have witnessed first hand the fresh smell of the rain, the ambient lighting it provides, the memories it creates… and rainbows! It’s hard to take our word for it, especially when rain is not on your wish list…..but, we totally get it! That’s why we’re here to talk to you about how The Gardens handles rain on your wedding day, so your best day ever really is the Best. Day. Ever.

So, first things first, close that weather app and put the phone down. Refreshing the weather channel like a magic 8 ball won’t change the outcome nor will it help calm your nerves. It’s okay to mourn a bit if you see some sprinkles in your future, but now it’s time to ask yourself this very important question: “Will rain stop you from marrying the love of your life?” We didn’t think so. The second most important question: “Will you melt if rain hits you like the Wicked Witch of the West?”  We didn’t think so either.  Now let’s talk about how The Gardens has you covered!

We’re On Your Team!

Cheers! This epic photo by Tessa June Photography is a perfect example of embracing the day! A little rain doesn’t ruin a wedding day – it adds to the memories!

What does a rainy day wedding ceremony look like here at The Gardens? Great question. Let’s dive into that…

  1. The Gardens Set-Up Lead continuously communicates with your professional Day of Coordinator to ensure all of your wishes for the day are implemented including the answer to this question: Outside or Under the Tent?
  2. If you would like to stick to your outdoor wedding ceremony site, The Gardens staff will be there with towels and leaf blowers to dry off the seating right before the start of the ceremony.
  3. If you would like to move your ceremony to the Wedding Reception Tent, here are day-of adjustments that The Gardens staff can do to help (if space allows): Set-up an arbor in the Wedding Reception Tent, slightly adjust tables to create an aisle if need be, and set-up a front row of chairs for immediate family near the arbor. It’s important to note that your tables and chairs will already be set for your reception and can not be moved out of the tent for the ceremony. Guests are welcome to sit at their tables during the ceremony.

The Gardens Reception Tent

Our reception tent stays up all season long and is our Plan B. With removable tent sides, we have the ability to strategically enclose certain sections of the tent to protect guests from rain during the summer. (We don’t automatically enclose the entire tent otherwise it turns into a true greenhouse! …See what we did there?) When temperatures drop sometime in the fall, the tent sides are put on and stay on so we can heat the tent.  Add in a fully paved floor to keep your guests nice shoes out of the mud, it’s a great option if you choose to get married under the canopy of the tent!

Speaking of pavers… The Gardens of Castle Rock has almost 15,000 square feet of pavers to avoid mud on a rainy day; Unless, of course, you’re young at heart enough to seek out the mud. You shouldn’t have to give up your favorite pair of heels for rain boots (unless you love that idea), and our walk ways will give you plenty of opportunity to keep your shoes mud free. The pavers stretch from both dressing rooms, throughout the reception patio area, and under our 40’x100′ Reception Tent. The Lath House ceremony location also has pavers throughout the whole space.

Flexible in Ceremony Schedule

The Lath House lights shine extra bright during rainy ceremonies.

The first concept to remember is that a forecast of rain doesn’t mean 24 hours of rain. If you want to wait on starting the ceremony for 20 minutes to see if the rain passes by, we’re game! You make the decision on your ceremony time. Your Gardens Set-Up Lead will be working with your Day of Coordinator to work out a new ceremony time, if necessary, and any day-of location changes (if you decide to go from outside to under the tent) so that you can sit back and relax.

Covered Places for Pictures

Worried about rain for your first look photos? Just step right outside of The Garden’s Suite for a first look! It’s nicely covered from the elements. Photo Credit: Amy Ray Photography

There are several outdoor covered areas throughout The Gardens of Castle Rock for you to do a first look, snuggle in with your sweetie, or cheery wildly with your bridal party. You chose an outdoor wedding venue for a reason… Let’s get you outside for some truly remarkable photos to cherish for a lifetime.

Indoor Arbor

We know a lot of consideration goes into your arbor decorations for your wedding ceremony… which is why we have an arbor exclusively for weddings in the Wedding Reception Tent.

In the case of your wedding ceremony being moved into the Wedding Reception Tent, The Garden’s Team will set up an indoor arbor for your ceremony décor. Any ceremony site day-of adjustments (drying ceremony seating outside, adjusting the aisle, setting up the arbor) made due to weather does not result in extra fees.

Heating for the Cool Months

Don’t let the weather “rain on your parade”! You can dance the night away under the canopy of The Garden’s Wedding Reception Tent knowing that your guests are having fun and are comfortable! Photo Credit: Jackie Adelmann Photography

A refreshing rain in June is a whole different ballgame than a north wind rain in September. Keep in mind, Mother Nature tends to dictate when and where tent sides are put on and when the heat gets turned on. During the summer months, a little rain means we can let the beautiful views of the gardens in by putting only one or two tent sides on. During the fall when rain tends to be a little chillier, all the tent sides are attached and the heat is turned on.

Embrace The Day

This is what embracing your rainy day wedding looks like. Photo By: Tessa June Photography

After reading this blog, it’s apparent that we’re here for you and we’ve got great features for a rainy day… but this last “insight” comes from you. While we know it is MUCH easier said than done, the only thing left to do is really embrace the day, rain and all. It is so much easier on your mind to just go with what the day brings. So grab your umbrella and make some memories!

11 Helpful Tips for Decorating Your Outdoor Wedding Venue

Make Your Best Day Ever Seamless and Unforgettable

Saying “I Do” under a canopy of nature, listening to the sweet songs of the birds, having space to breathe… these are just a few reasons couples decide to choose the great outdoors for their wedding day. We may be a little bias, but choosing an outdoor wedding venue for your wedding day definitely has it’s perks and we’re here to give you a few tips for decorating your outdoor event space.

1. Consider the Season!

Use nature! Too many signs and decorations can take away from an environment’s natural beauty. The best part of getting married at an outdoor wedding venue is the constantly changing scenery with each season.

So use the leaves as a floor! Use the lush leaves of the trees as a perfect backdrop. Make sure the color tones of your floral installations don’t clash with the environment around them. We’re not saying you can’t have pops of color, but colors like bright hot pink next to the muted neutrals often clash and are distracting.

Pops of orange next to muted greens in the bouquets and floral installations was the perfect color tone combination for this October wedding in The Lath House. Photo by: Haverlee Photography

2. Make it Element Proof

Wind, Rain, Hot, Cold – Minnesota gives us plenty of reasons to be weather prepared. So bring on the floral wire, industrial easels and zip ties!

We recommend high top table linens that are tied at the center or tight to the tables along with reception table linens that are long (to avoid wind blowing your linens away). Avoid glass whenever possible. Wide-based vases are the way to go along with plexiglass for signs. You wouldn’t want your reserved seating chart to come crashing down!

Signage is wonderful, but if they can’t survive a great fall, they aren’t meant for your outdoor wedding venue. Try utilizing plexiglass and sturdy easels for your signage. Tent draping by: Stargazer Designs. Photo by: Laura Brenden Photography

3. Adorn with Garlands and Draping

You want your wedding venue space to reflect your style and to transport your guests to another place! Loosely draped garlands to statement draping and light combinations can elevate your outdoor wedding ceremony and reception space.

Garlands

When it comes to garlands, they come in all shapes and sizes – Classic to Modern, we love it all!

Garland décor ideas include: suspending green wreaths by your head table, incorporating organic garland at your ceremony site (like Rachel and Graham pictured below), attaching greenery to statement lighting, suspending it in the air above the head table or dancefloor, or even installing a trellis.

Rachel and Graham’s September wedding was truly a romantic experience! Their garland (installed by Bachman’s) was a wedding day vision.

Abbey & Dan (and family) created this absolutely stunning light installation of Edison bulbs and garlands for their head table. Tent lighting by: Stargazer Designs. Photo by: Empiria Studios

Draping

Billowing fabric adds an ethereal element to your wedding day. Sheer white, blush, or a pop of color fastened with florals, twinkle lights, or an exceptional lighting design will transform a blank slate into a masterpiece. Talk about romantic wedding day vibes!

Your wedding archway is a the focal point of your wedding ceremony. It’s okay to invest in the décor that you dream of. Like this floral and draping design in The Lath House by: Stargazer Designs; Photo by: Lauren Brenden Photography

See what we mean? Draping + Lights = Whimsical Wedding Reception Tent. There’s no other math to explain it, really. Draping and Lights by: We’ve Got it Covered. Photo by: Erin Rae Photography

4. Make a Statement with Floral Installations

Instead of just bouquets on tabletops (especially in your reception area), think about using floral installations to fill your outdoor space. Suspended greenery and impressive floral arrangements take your guests from “Wow!” to “How?” These artistic and impressive details give your outdoor wedding venue an untamed garden vibe.

Teamwork makes the dream work, as they say. Amber Terese Events (planning and coordination), Budding Creations (florist), and We’ve Got it Covered (draping and lights) created this Reception Tent vision for Taylor and Tyler’s dreamy August Wedding. Photo by: Sarah Joy Photography

5. Seek out Eco-Friendly Decorations

Your wedding is meant to be a celebration of love and one of the greatest days of your life but, unfortunately, it can be one of the most wasteful days. We’re not saying you should skip the party or forgo those gorgeous details, but we recommend reusing and recycling as much as you can as well as avoiding décor that is harmful to the environment (such as glitter, rice or balloons).

Rent or borrow your décor: Check with family and friends to see what they have for you to use for your wedding décor. (You never know what cool vintage items you’ll find in Grandma’s basement!) You can also check with a professional decorator, your professional day-of-coordinator, bar or catering services to see if they have any included items for your special evening to rent or borrow.

Donate your decor: If you decide to go all out with a floral installation, there are great places for you to compost the florals or even donate them. Twofold Blooms, a local non-profit in Minnesota, repurposes florals from weddings and makes them into smaller bouquets for seniors in memory care or hospice.

Be eco-friendly by decorating your reception tent with live trees! You heard us correctly! After your wedding, you can plant them in your honor.

6. Bring the Outdoors, Indoors and the Indoors, Outdoors!

Wedding trends will always come and go, but you’ll find that an outdoorsy, natural wedding is always a popular choice. So, why not mix and match the elements to really bring the space to life? So hang greenery in The Garden’s reception tent. Drop a vintage couch behind The Garden’s Fireplace. Make your outdoor space unique and “so you”.

7. Set Up Plenty of Food and Water Stations

Your guests will need plenty of water and snacks on a hot summer day. Snacks and drinks (not just the alcoholic kind) keep people happy…which makes your wedding day more enjoyable and memorable. Infused water tables and donut walls are definitely a fan favorite.

Defused water, iced tea, and just plain old water gives alcohol-free options for hydration for your Outdoor Wedding in Minnesota.

8. Provide a Photo Station

Hire a booth or make a booth! Photo stations provide excellent entertainment for guests of all ages and they get to take a special souvenir home from your day.

As an outdoor wedding venue, The Garden’s has plenty of fun spaces to convert into a photo station or to park your favorite photo camper.

9. Don’t forget the Night Lighting

As we approach the holidays, you can appreciate the magic of driving through town and seeing the general décor, but then coming back at night to see an entirely different show! A few strings of twinkles can take you far.

Steph and Joe’s family and friends gathered around to witness their first dance under the magical twinkle of this lighting design in The Garden’s Reception Tent by Stargazer Designs. Photo by: Moore Photography

10. Bring a Tool Kit

If you wonder if you’re going to need a certain tool for set-up. Bring it. Better yet, bring two. For example, many outdoor wedding venues require that you bring your own ladder for decorating. We suggest bringing one or two – especially if you have several people helping you set up the morning of your wedding.

Other helpful items to bring for set-up include: Scissors (again, bring several sets), zip-ties, extra draping and linens if you are providing these, extra strings of lights if you are providing these, and twine or floral wire.

Outdoor wedding venues provide ample photo opportunities for people and details alike. When it comes to the infamous dress picture (like this gorgeous Lath House capture) to hanging your décor, you are going to need a ladder to really make an impact. Photo by: Erin Kathleen Photography

Even better than worrying about bringing a ladder, you can…

11. Hire the Professionals

When it comes to decorating your venue, sometimes it’s hard to decipher what YOU should do, and what the professionals should do. Your budget matters, but so does your sanity.

Professional decorators know how much fabric they need to fill the space and make it look intentional; They have extra lightbulbs and replacement light strands; They have the biggest ladders you’ve ever seen to get the draping and lights nice and high; They come back at midnight to take everything down so you don’t have to worry about it. The list goes on and on and we believe they are worth every penny.

You don’t have to take our word for it, ask a professional decorator…

We’ve Got it Covered

Here’s what Erin, owner and lead designer of We’ve Got It Covered, said about decorating an outdoor space: “When decorating for your outdoor wedding, consideration must be made for various weather. I recommend hiring a professional for any outdoor décor because they have the experience to ensure the décor will be secure to hold up to the weather.”

From the linens to the lighting to the drapes, We’ve Got It Covered really had this romantic scene in the Garden’s Reception Tent covered! Photo By: Rachel Graff Photography

Stargazer Designs

Michelle, owner and designer with Stargazer Designs, gave us valuable advice for decorating an outdoor space: “Using quality materials in the correct scale makes all the difference! The best way to stretch your budget when decorating for your wedding is to concentrate décor in specific areas and make them Instagram worthy. This can be done through color, lighting and using statement pieces. Whether they are flowers, vignettes, or props, focal areas need to catch the eye, and capture your guests’ senses.”

Sunday Wedding Trends for 2023: Sundays are the Best!

Surprise Your Guests with these Exciting Sunday Wedding Day Experiences

Guess what? Sundays are not about brunch anymore…

Don’t get us wrong, we love a crispy waffle with a side of sizzling bacon, but Sunday celebrations can be so much more than an early ceremony, brunch, and driving off before the sun sets. We know that you want your wedding day to be as unique as you are, so why follow everybody else’s timeline of what a Sunday wedding should look like? Sure, your guests may have work on Monday, so set them up for a great start to the week with a wedding day experience they’ll never forget! From unique decorations to entertainment, here are 6 Epic Sunday Wedding Trends to enrich your special day.

#1 Delight Your Guests with Entertainment!

Wedding entertainment is perfect for a Sunday wedding! From caricatures to live painting, aerialists to fire shows, magicians to live bands, there are many alternative ways for your guests to have fun at your Sunday reception (and will give them a reason to stick around). Check out these really great experiences that Garden’s couples have provided for their guests!

Live Painting

Live painting is becoming increasingly popular and it’s not too hard to figure out why. Not only will you walk away with a masterpiece created on the day you were married, but your guests will be so excited to watch them as they work.

Aerialist or a Fire Show

Sam and Nick’s day included aerial silk performers who showcased their talents after supper and then ended their night with fire performers! Check out their wonderful, woodsy wedding by clicking the link below:

Live Band

Bands bring the music, but they also bring tons of personality. When it comes to your wedding day, why not have the party of your life? Live bands can perform during cocktail hour, for a portion of your dance, or jam out all night long. So whether you are hoping for an early night or to keep your guests dancing into Sunday evening, live music is a hit.

In The Fields played an eclectic mix of rock, pop, and country to entertain these wedding guests in the reception tent at The Gardens of Castle Rock.

#2: Create a Whimsical Ceremony Site with Wisteria

Wisteria (installed by Marah Cole Designs) was the cherry on top of Leah and Spencer’s Pretty Floral Garden Wedding.

Sigh. Wisteria. Does it grow naturally in The Lath House at The Gardens? No, it sure doesn’t. But, with the money you are saving by choosing a Sunday, many couples find that they can afford hiring a decorator to install this exquisite upgrade. Not only will you have a magical atmosphere for your “I Dos”, but your guests will be in awe of the most unique wedding ceremony space they have ever seen.

#3: Sundaes on Sunday

I scream, you scream, your guests scream for ice cream! An ice cream cart is the ticket between just another wedding cake dessert and serving your guests with a scoop of wedding day fun!

If you are going to provide a late night treat for your guests such as ice cream or wood fired pizza, make sure you note this on a timeline of events so your guests know what to expect (and stick around for).

#4: Game Night

Sunday night is family game night, so you know what that means? Beersbee, Checkers, Bocce Ball, Bags, Badminton, Crossnet, Spikeball, Ladder Toss, Kan-Jam, Giant Dominos, Giant Dice, Giant Jenga… you get the idea. Is this necessarily a new trend? Maybe not. But it’s a trend that we foresee as making your Sunday event one for guests to truly enjoy.

Simultaneous games of Kan-Jam and Cornhole kept these wedding guests thoroughly entertained during cocktail hour for this Sunday outdoor wedding reception.

#5: Food Trucks

Why brunch when you can have street tacos? Just to clarify, we love brunch. In fact, we love breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, supper, dessert, and everything in between. We just want to give you full permission to think outside of the waffle iron and give your guests an unexpected wedding day meal that matches your fun and relaxed style.

An added bonus to hosting a Sunday wedding is that many vendors have increased availability versus a Friday or Saturday. Photo by: Lily and Lime Photography

#6: The Last Dance

Okay… We’ll admit it. Not every couple chooses to stay until midnight on Sunday. If this is you, we think you’re going to love this new trend called “The Last Dance”. It’s a great way to close down the party and to see off your family and friends in a fun and unique way.

The “final dance” is an opportunity to soak in the energy and love of the day before departing. Photo by: Audrey Nicole Photography

Here’s how it works: First, go say goodbye to as many people as you can. (And if you tell your mom we told you to dance and ditch without saying good bye to her, we will direct her back to this post.) A quick hug and “thank you for coming” will suffice. (Again, a much longer hug for mom…)

Next, have your DJ announce your last dance and suggest your guests come to the dance floor. Your DJ can also take this opportunity to announce that your guests can line up for a picture opportunity after the song has ended as you exit to your car.

Then, you and your sweetie dance to the last song of the night. This is your opportunity to absorb all of the emotions of your wedding day and take in the very last moments. After the song is done, you guessed it, exit to your get-away car and your happily ever after as you are cheered on by friends and family. What a perfect way to end your best day ever!

An early night means your photographer is around to capture a departure photo AND your guests can get home in time to prepare for the week ahead. Win-win! Photo by Erin Kathleen Photography

Are Sundays Really the Best?

You don’t have to take just our word for it… After all, our couples are the ones that have planned and created their best Sundays ever! Read why these trend-setting Sunday couples loved their unique wedding day celebrations.

Shaylee and Blake: “I remember the excitement and all the happiness and love surrounding us [on our wedding day]. It was an indescribable feeling. Also watching family members dance on the dance floor was pretty funny too! We liked having a Sunday wedding because we felt it was unique… during the summer, people have so many weddings (and most aren’t on Sundays), so it made it easier on our guests availability!” Photo Credit: CLJ Photography

Sam and Nick: “We loved our Sunday wedding at the Gardens! One of our favorite moments – and our guests, too – was the fire performance! We loved letting our family and friends into our world and giving them a totally unique wedding experience.” (Curious about the fire performance? Click here.)

Tia and Justin: “We chose Sunday and loved that it gave our guests time to travel to our wedding and enjoy time relaxing beforehand! We wanted our rehearsal dinner (Saturday evening) to be a time where our close family and friends got to spend time catching up rather than scrambling for a wedding on Saturday night. It was great to have a slow pace to the weekend leading up to the wedding—it put us all in a stress-free mindset. We were also grateful to find out that most of our food + dessert options were available on Sunday (whereas most of them were already booked for Saturdays through the summer). Our guests have brought up how fun it was to have ice cream at our wedding as well, and because our wedding was on Sunday, we had time to figure out the logistics of keeping it frozen the whole afternoon.”

Wedding Reception Table Ideas: The Sweetheart Table

Make your wedding day all about YOU by integrating the sweetheart wedding reception table into your intimate outdoor wedding setting.

It’s no secret that your wedding day is all about you and your sweetie. Each aspect of your wedding day should reflect your style, interests, and personality! Are you looking for an alternative to a traditional head table or simply want to snuggle in with your new Mr. or Mrs.? Enter the Sweetheart Wedding Reception Table.

“Holly and Anton, party of two!” Although they chose to sit at a sweetheart table “alone”, H&A still arranged their bridal party near by to distinguish them as guests of honor. Photo Credit: Studio KH

What is a Sweetheart Table?

Sweetheart tables are meant for, well, sweethearts! By Google’s definition, they are smaller tables that solely seat the newlyweds – but that doesn’t mean that’s the only way to incorporate the sweetheart table. Not only can sweetheart tables be on the larger side, they can also be used within the traditional head table line-up for extra leg room and comfort.

A longer sweetheart table is extra dramatic and may provide extra leg room AND wedding gown room (for those extra poofy ball gowns…).

Why Choose a Sweetheart Table?

The sweetheart table makes a cute AND functional head table! Cute on it’s own, but also functional in a traditional head table line up (what newlywed wants to be separated by table legs?). Here are a few more reasons…

You Get a Chance to Be Alone

We know you love your bridal party. You wouldn’t have picked them if you hadn’t, right? It’s okay to hang out with just your new spouse for supper time. Plus, this gives you a chance to wind down after a whirlwind of emotion, pictures, and lots of talking to long, lost relatives. Step away from the chaos for a moment and chat with your best friend!

Your Bridal Party can sit by their Plus-Ones or Family

Have you ever been sent to sit with your date’s Uncle Jack because they were at the head table? Then you probably know where we’re going with this. Let’s just say Uncle Jack’s extensive collection of dad jokes are amusing… but may get tiresome after some time. Also, your bridal party may be looking to take a breather from being in the spotlight. There’s no rule book when it comes to head table arrangements (at least… not here at The Garden’s of Castle Rock!), so there is nothing saying you can’t arrange their seating near by.

Like a cherry on top of a head table sundae, this head table arrangement features the Sweetheart Table at the top and two Cedar Banquet Tables connected at the corners. A perfect layout for larger bridal parties or parties with plus-ones!

They’re Photogenic!

Your photographer is going to want a great view of your reactions to funny, loving, or maybe embarrassing stories told by your family and friends. When displayed on its own, the sweetheart table provides a great view of you for everyone!

You Can Splurge or Get Creative on a Budget!

Splurging on distinguished floral arrangements, notable head table décor, or fancy seating can be super fun with a sweetheart table! Opt for special rental items, such as formal place settings or fancy chairs for just the two of you instead of your entire bridal party.

Consider using the floral display from your ceremony to adorn your sweetheart table! As you can see here, a mountain of florals created a lavish centerpiece. Photo Credit: Sophisticated Grace Photography

How Do I Decorate a Sweetheart Table?

If we had a nickel for every couple that couldn’t enjoy their reception because their head table wasn’t decorated perfectly… Spoiler alert: We have yet to collect a nickel for this… So, enjoy the process! Here are some ideas to get you started…

1) Stick with your theme.

This BOHO, vintage inspired head table décor is very welcoming and it packs a punch of character! Photo Credit: Angela Divine Photography

2) Pick Some Cozy Seating

Choosing a sweetheart table that is wide enough to host your favorite decorative seating is a must! Here at The Gardens, our handcrafted cedar sweetheart tables are 5 ft. long. Photo Credit: Erin Rae Photography

3) Choose a Linen, Runner, or Garland. (Or don’t!)

Lace and a delicate floral display created the perfect garden wedding scene indoors. Hello, sentimental “something borrowed” on display!

4) Create Your Centerpiece

Minimalist and moody, or maximalist and dramatic? Creating your centerpiece doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes less equals more, and sometimes more equals… WOWZA! Photo Credit: Perry James Photography

5) Add Some Twinkle

Pillar…votive…tea light…battery operated. Candles help make your tablescape magical. Otherwise, consider LED twinkle lights. Photo Credit: Kimberly Williams Photography

6) Consider an Interesting Backdrop

A backdrop of varying lumber shapes and colors perfectly complimented this rustic refined reception theme. Other backdrop ideas to consider include lights, draping, a floral installation, or the natural garden scene right outside of the reception tent.

7) Set The Table

Fancy place settings can get expensive or difficult to provide for a large crowd; however, providing special plates, utensils, napkins for just you and your sweetie (remember – your table settings will be the most documented) creates an extra special space for you to enjoy. Photo Credit: Taryn Christine Photography

8) Add Some Signs

You’re officially Mr. and Mrs. – or Mr. and Mr. – or Mrs. and Mrs.! Why not display your official title?

9) Tell Your Story!

Little hidden gems throughout your reception space illustrate your story, add character, and keep guests intrigued.

10) Enjoy YOUR Day!!

Your day is finally here! The pictures are taken. The ceremony complete. Dinner is about to be served. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your day! Photo Credit: Eric Vest Photography

Unforgettable Wedding Reception Table Decor

Helpful Tips and Tricks for Styling Unique Outdoor Reception Tablescapes Your Guests will Never Forget!

Wedding reception table decoration sets the stage for your party, works as a great ice breaker for your guests and illustrates who you are as a couple. You might find yourself here because you’re wondering… “Where do I start?” It can feel overwhelming diving into the world of wedding table design. We will discuss where to start when creating your tablescape, along with other helpful tips and tricks for curating and implementing your wedding reception table décor. You will also find a collection of wedding day reception table settings to get you inspired. Here’s to creating an unforgettable dinner table for your guests!

Darling window boxes filled with florals suited this garden inspired outdoor wedding reception.

Decide on a wedding “theme”. Examples of wedding themes include: Garden Inspired, Fairy Tale, Vintage, Modern, Rustic, Cultural, and Bohemian… just to name a few. Next, add an adjective to describe how you want your reception space to feel. For example: Cozy and Rustic. Romantic and Modern. Friendly and Colorful. Voilà! You’ve narrowed down your inspiration search.

The Elements of the Reception Table. We promise this isn’t chemistry class…but there is a science to the reception table. Potential elements of your reception tables include: place settings, linens, centerpieces, stationary elements (menu, place cards, table numbers), the chairs, favors, and lighting. If you’re going for a minimalist theme, having each of these displayed on every table may not be ideal, whereas a glamorous wedding may be all about the formalities.

Curate your table décor. The best part! Before you dive in to the world of curation, consider…

    1. Your Venue: Are open-flame candles allowed? If your venue is outside, are your items wind proof? What kind of décor is not allowed?

Tell the story of your happily-ever-after with pictures of your journey at each reception table.

  1. The size and shape of your tables: While round tables may look best with larger, single centerpieces, rectangular tables can sport three (or more) smaller clusters of décor items. Table size and shape also affects the style and size for table linens. We advise finding out these dimensions before falling in love and purchasing linens that don’t fit.
  2. Guest Comfort: Your décor may be amazing and the flowers out of this world, but grandma isn’t going to be happy if she can’t put her plate down or see Uncle Bob who is sitting across from her. Practical table décor can also be stylish. You do not have to sacrifice style for function nor function for style.
  3. What’s already available to you: For some, this means talking with your decorator and/or Day of Coordinator about items they have available for you to use. For others, this means collecting vintage dishes and vases from friends and family.
  4. Have fun! Add a touch of the unexpected. Pops of color, mismatched centerpieces, embarrassing pictures from your childhood… it keeps guests intrigued and your space unique.

TESTING, TESTING, 1, 2, 3! You practice your vows, you practice walking in your wedding day formals, but did you practice your table set-up? Set-up your wedding reception centerpieces on a table with the same dimensions as your venue’s tables or call up your venue and see if you can test out your centerpieces on a table or two. Now, snap a photo – anyone placing your décor the morning of will thank you! As an outdoor venue, we also suggest setting up your décor outside (for several hours) to make sure it’s ready for any elements such as wind.

Time to get inspired! Below we have included some of our favorite table arrangements for added inspiration. Happy planning!

This BOHO inspired table centerpiece paired well with a simple, formal wedding reception place setting.

White drapery, linens, and table settings on round reception tables allowed these colorful floral arrangements to take center stage.

Placing guest favors on each plate ensures that each of your loved ones receive a special gift from you. (Make sure to have spares – just in case!)

Recycled bottles paired with wildflowers are perfect for vintage inspired weddings, eco-friendly weddings, and minimalist minded weddings. So simple. So sweet.

Lanterns are an elegant and simple addition for round table reception decor. Not only are they lovely during the daytime, but they light the night for guests who talk well into the evening.

Centerpieces do not have to be dramatic to be, well, dramatic! Twinkle lights and the soft flicker of candles created a fascinating scene on these hand-crafted cedar banquet tables. Photo By: Sophisticated Grace Photography

Mid-century vintage vibes are trending and we love it! Add in some mixed Rustic Refined chairs to carry on a cozy feel to your entire head table.

Minimalist and moody – Who says that your centerpieces can’t have a little attitude?

It’s very rare that the chairs take center stage… but we love how the sweet touches of pink accents were simple enough to make the chairs seem oh-so-inviting for this September wedding.

12 Memorable Outdoor Wedding High-top Table Decor Suggestions

High-top tables – also known as cocktail tables – are the perfect addition to your outdoor wedding reception space for functionality and aesthetic purposes.

Here comes the bride!

Here at The Gardens of Castle Rock, we provide the high-top tables, you bring the pizazz!

Here are some helpful tips for fashioning your Gardens High-Top Tables:

Outdoor-Hardy Centerpieces We’ve seen flowers, twinkle lights, and pictures (you name it!) adorning the center of our high-top tables. Centerpieces help tell your story and create a vibe at your outdoor wedding reception; however, we also embrace mother nature here at The Gardens. We recommend that your centerpieces be outdoor hardy (heavy, low center of gravity, not too tall, ready to withstand wind).

Floor Length Tablecloths Utilizing a 120″+ round cloth linens covers the legs of each high-top table and creates an aesthetically pleasing look. Choose a 120″ round linen if you want it to nearly touch the ground or 132″ round linen if you want a billowing, overflowing look that will cover the legs. We recommend not going any bigger, otherwise your guests may face a tripping hazard.

Sashed Linens All linens should be tightly fastened mid-way down when hosting an outdoor wedding and there are so many unique ideas to integrate sashes! Check out the photos below for some cool ideas. We recommend testing out the sash to make sure it’s easy to tie and then stays fastened.

Round not Rectangular It may be tempting to reuse the white rectangular linens from your cousin’s wedding, but they do not drape correctly and look quite silly with open gaps on the side… Trust us!

Choose Fabric that’s Fireproof No birthday party plastic linens here! Non-flammable fabric is the best and only choice to create an elegant and safe reception space.
