Beyond Autumn Tones: A Vibrant, Multi-Hued September Celebration – Real Wedding Spotlight

When Emily and Maddie toured The Gardens of Castle Rock on January 30th, the venue was in the “dead of a Minnesota winter”. Despite the challenge of envisioning an outdoor ceremony and reception in the cold and snow, they immediately fell in love with the space, remarking, “We would have gotten married right then and there with no additional décor because we loved it so much”.

After booking a mid-September date, they intentionally designed a vibrant celebration of love and personality, beautifully set against the venue’s lush greenery and unique wooden structures.

When the big day arrived, Emily & Maddie chose The Lath House for their ceremony site, a location characterized by sprawling grapevines and thousands of café lights. Instead of arranging the guest benches in traditional straight lines facing the natural wood pergola, they opted to turn the benches 90 degrees, angling the outside seating toward the center of the structure. This configuration created a circular space where Emily and Maddie stood in the middle with their officiant, literally surrounded by their friends and family. Hanging directly above them was a striking circular floral, vibrant autumnal palette installation crafted from grapevines, dahlias, zinnias, and marigolds, which were intertwined with festive orange and yellow garlands.

After The Lath House ceremony, the reception transformed into a lively, festival-inspired celebration filled with unique interactive elements and spirited entertainment. Moving away from a traditional paper-and-pen guestbook, Emily and Maddie featured a Lego Guestbook station, where friends and family were invited to build personalized figures to mark their presence. Following a delicious dinner by Sasquatch Sandwiches, thanks to The Gardens Open Catering policy, the entertainment took center stage as The Gender Outlawz performed under the purple-hued lights of the stage.

While many guests joined the couple on the dance floor, others enjoyed a more relaxed atmosphere playing cornhole and various yard games on the lawn. To satisfy sweet cravings, a mid-height table in the Wedding Reception Tent was filled with an assortment of cookies, bars, and cupcakes. For a more hands-on treat, guests could visit a “S’mores Upgrade Station,” which offered individual kits stocked with premium chocolates, fluffy marshmallows, and graham crackers.

As the evening ended, it was clear that Emily and Maddie had successfully created a vibrant, late-summer celebration of love and personality. From the intimate, circular ceremony in The Lath House to the high-energy performances and interactive stations, every detail reflected commitment to fun, inclusivity, and personal expression. Their wedding was more than just a celebration; it was a festival of love that utilized The Gardens to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience for everyone involved.

“The Gardens of Castle Rock helped us achieve the wedding of our dreams. My wife and I toured the venue and fell in love with the place even in the dead of winter, we said to each other ” we would do it right here right now with no additional decor” because we loved it so much. This venue was not only LGBTQ inclusive but was very intentionally more than just inclusive/tolerant- they made it very clear they were LGBTQ SUPPORTERS AND ALLIES. My wife and I felt safe with every staff member throughout every step of the process. Shout-out to Glenn for his beautiful artwork and warm soul! Shout-out to Tammy for being our cheerleader throughout all of our planning. We had continuous compliments from our guests about how perfect the venue was.” – Emily & Maddie

Stately Wooden Lath House Covered Pergola for an Elegant Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

Who would have known that over 25 years ago, when we installed the cedar pergola on the walkway right in the middle of the nursery’s retail space, that it would turn into such an important part of The Gardens of Castle Rock?

As a landscape architect, I’ve always been intrigued by how structures define a garden. A pergola is a classic “gateway”—a grand entrance that moves you from one space to the next. It’s the perfect metaphor for a wedding: a literal gateway into your new life together.

While cedar is a wonderful wood, our original structure was finally starting to show its age. When it came time to replace it, we drew inspiration from the original design, but elevated it with everything we’ve learned since.

The new Lath House Covered Pergola is a testament to our commitment to authenticity and sustainability. The structure is crafted entirely from dead ash trees salvaged from our property that were affected by Emerald Ash Borer. All of the ash trees were milled into wood right here in our own log yard. To protect the timbers from the elements, we added a roof. The subtle eyebrow arch maintains an open pergola feel while also providing shelter. Underneath the roof, the ceiling is finished in rich black walnut, creating a beautiful contrast with the lighter ash timber.

The addition of the roof enhances that “gateway” feeling, playing with light and shadow as you walk through. This structure is now one of 11 authentic timber-frame builds at The Gardens, each showcasing a different aspect of the craft we love and providing a stunning backdrop on wedding days.

We can’t wait for you to walk under it on your way to your new forever.

An Imaginative Journey: Crafting the Ultimate Lord of The Rings Themed Outdoor Wedding

Plan Your Ultimate Middle-earth Wedding at The Gardens of Castle Rock.

Are you and your fiancé D&Ders, Norsephiles, or Disney Devotees? Have you ever considered integrating your favorite fandom into your wedding day? At The Gardens, we say, “Why not?!” Whether a shared passion created the “meet-cute” that brought you together or simply defines your lifestyle, we believe your wedding day should showcase the things you love.

Amber and Matt did exactly that by hosting a stunning Lord of the Rings-themed wedding. Discover how they transformed our venue into a living piece of Tolkien’s Legendarium.

Middle-earth Wedding Apparel: From Hobbits to High Elves

To honor the unwavering courage of Frodo Baggins, Matt styled his attire after the high-status Hobbit, complete with a bright red jacket and walking stick. His “groomshobbits” resembled Frodo’s loyal companions—Samwise, Merry, and Pippin—dressed in signature Hobbit apparel:

  • Signature Details: Vibrant vests, suspenders, and shortened trousers.
  • Traveler’s Cloaks: Each wore a cloak fastened with a leaf-shaped clasp, a direct reference to the Cloaks of Lórien gifted by the Elves in Peter Jackson’s films.
  • The Hobbit Aesthetic: This style emphasizes comfort, nature, and practical yet colorful clothing.

Amber channeled the grace of Arwen Undómiel with a sheer, ethereal cloak and a delicate silver circlet. Her bridesmaids captured the Elven connection to the forest, wearing individualized, nature-inspired gowns accented with floral crowns and delicate botanical pieces.

The Setting: Finding Hobbiton in Minnesota

Amber and Matt chose The Gardens of Castle Rock because our handcrafted structures and woodland backdrops perfectly match the Lord of the Rings aesthetic.

An Enchanted Reception: Rivendell Meets the Old Forest

The wedding reception emphasized a connection to the natural world, much like the pavilions of Rivendell.

  • Organic Decor: The Wedding Reception Tent poles wrapped in lush branches and a 22-foot greenery head table installation brought the “outside in,” hinting at the floor of the Old Forest.
  • Symbolic Tablescapes: Thick moss runners and tall Foxgloves (Digitalis) on The Gardens Cedar Banquet Tables reflected the rolling hills of Middle-earth and fantasy lore.
  • Woodland Accents: Forest-green napkins paid homage to the Elves of Mirkwood.
  • The Feast: Our Cedar Banquet Tables are a direct match for the heavy timber trestle tables found in the common room of The Prancing Pony, where travelers gather for a half-pint and a song.

Whether you’re dreaming of a Lord of the Rings-inspired wedding, a Norse-inspired feast, or a whimsical Disney celebration, your wedding day should be a reflection of the things that brought you together. At The Gardens of Castle Rock, our hand-crafted timber structures, lush woodland backdrops, and Hobbiton-esque stone walls provide the ultimate “thin place” where fantasy and reality meet. From the soaring Elven heights of our Cruck Frame to the rustic warmth of our Grindbygg-inspired pergolas, we offer a versatile Minnesota wedding venue that adapts to your unique aesthetic. Don’t just host a wedding—create an immersive experience that celebrates your favorite fandoms in a setting that feels like it was grown right out of the forest.

Real Wedding Spotlight: A Classic Wedding Day Look for a Modern Wedding Couple

In an age where wedding trends can change with the seasons, Jack and Ally chose to celebrate their love with a day rooted in timeless, sophisticated elegance, while injecting personal touches that made the event distinctly their own. Set against the lush, natural backdrop of The Gardens of Castle Rock, this celebration was the perfect marriage of classic romance and modern charm.

Allie & Jack’s beautiful wedding celebration masterfully blended timeless romance with contemporary, personal flair, perfectly befitting a modern couple. As the bride, Allie epitomized classic elegance in her white organza bridal gown, which featured a dramatic trumpet silhouette softened by an ethereal floral and leaf tulle overlay. Paired with a sweeping tulle cathedral-length veil, she chose a delicate bouquet of pastel pink and white roses, that looked utterly timeless. The bridal party continued the soft, romantic palette, with bridesmaids dressed in pale blue with smaller bouquets similar to Allie’s. Jack and his groomsmen maintained a sophisticated standard in sharp tuxedos, while the couple’s beloved dog Remi stole the show as the adorable “ring bear,” with the wedding bands hooked securely to his collar—a charming and modern personalization.

The breathtaking setting of The Gardens of Castle Rock provided the perfect canvas for this elegant event. The ceremony took place in the bright and airy Lath House, offering guests an intimate space surrounded by nature. This was immediately followed by a celebration held on the patio around the Garden Pavilion and under the Wedding Reception Tent, allowing the festivities to flow seamlessly from day to night. The Wedding Reception Tent decor was a study in refined simplicity: white table linens on the round tables provided a crisp base for centerpieces of pale flowers and greenery. Overhead, the ceiling of the Wedding Reception Tent was transformed by cascading crystal pendants interspersed with lush greenery and illuminated by the soft glow of white cafe lights, creating a romantic, starry ambiance. Even the minimalistic two-tiered white cake adhered to the clean, sophisticated theme.

Hosting this memorable day at The Gardens of Castle Rock is an incredibly smart choice for couples seeking a versatile and naturally stunning backdrop. As demonstrated by Allie and Jack’s wedding, the venue offers distinct yet cohesive areas—from the structural beauty of the Lath House for the ceremony to the open air of the patio for the reception—which streamlines the guest experience. This transition allows couples to create an integrated celebration without the need for travel between events. Furthermore, the natural beauty of The Gardens means less money needs to be spent on transforming the space; the venue’s inherent elegance, coupled with a simple, sophisticated decor plan of white, pale colors, and greenery, effortlessly achieves a high-end, romantic aesthetic.
