Well hey there! Are you looking for inspiration on how to infuse your wedding day with personality? Or perhaps you’re fresh out of ideas for your reception seating chart and table numbers? Either way, you’ve come to the right place! In this month’s blog, we’ve helpfully curated a smattering of inspiration for all of your planning needs.

A major hallmark of the modern wedding is a personal touch – couples want their weddings to reflect them and their tastes, and not be a standard, cookie-cutter matrimonial experience. One way to help make your day uniquely yours is through decor, which includes both your reception seating chart and table numbers. Seating charts, according to some, set the tone for your reception. So if you’re looking for a celebration with a rustic flair, consider using a handsome wooden board to hold your seating arrangements. Or, if you’re looking for a modern, eclectic vibe, consider a sleek, minimalistic seating chart in a glossy frame. (Here’s a bonus tip: while glass signs and mirrors made into signs are very beautiful, one gust of wind can spell disaster, and then it’s bye-bye seating chart. Trust us, you don’t want that! If your heart is set on a sign like that, *make sure you have it properly weighed down.*)

Table numbers are another way to add a unique touch to your wedding. Depending on your tablescape plans, table numbers can either be an accent piece or the star of the show. If you have personalized table numbers, perhaps with photos of you and your partner, or fun facts about your story together, then they can easily be the highlight of your table decor. Make your wedding day all about YOU by integrating the sweetheart wedding reception table into your intimate outdoor wedding setting.

It’s no secret that your wedding day is all about you and your sweetie. Each aspect of your wedding day should reflect your style, interests, and personality! Are you looking for an alternative to a traditional head table or simply want to snuggle in with your new Mr. or Mrs.? Enter the Sweetheart Wedding Reception Table.

What is a Sweetheart Table?

Sweetheart tables are meant for, well, sweethearts! By Google’s definition, they are smaller tables that solely seat the newlyweds – but that doesn’t mean that’s the only way to incorporate the sweetheart table. Not only can sweetheart tables be on the larger side, they can also be used within the traditional head table line-up for extra leg room and comfort.

A longer sweetheart table is extra dramatic and may provide extra leg room AND wedding gown room (for those extra poofy ball gowns…).

Why Choose a Sweetheart Table?

The sweetheart table makes a cute AND functional head table! Cute on it’s own, but also functional in a traditional head table line up (what newlywed wants to be separated by table legs?). Here are a few more reasons…

You Get a Chance to Be Alone

We know you love your bridal party. You wouldn’t have picked them if you hadn’t, right? It’s okay to hang out with just your new spouse for supper time. Plus, this gives you a chance to wind down after a whirlwind of emotion, pictures, and lots of talking to long, lost relatives. Step away from the chaos for a moment and chat with your best friend!

Your Bridal Party can sit by their Plus-Ones or Family

Have you ever been sent to sit with your date’s Uncle Jack because they were at the head table? Then you probably know where we’re going with this. Let’s just say Uncle Jack’s extensive collection of dad jokes are amusing… but may get tiresome after some time. Also, your bridal party may be looking to take a breather from being in the spotlight. There’s no rule book when it comes to head table arrangements (at least… not here at The Garden’s of Castle Rock!), so there is nothing saying you can’t arrange their seating near by.

How Do I Decorate a Sweetheart Table?

If we had a nickel for every couple that couldn’t enjoy their reception because their head table wasn’t decorated perfectly… Spoiler alert: We have yet to collect a nickel for this… So, enjoy the process! Here are some ideas to get you started…

1) Stick with your theme.

2) Pick Some Cozy Seating

Helpful Tips and Tricks for Styling Unique Outdoor Reception Tablescapes Your Guests will Never Forget!

Wedding reception table decoration sets the stage for your party, works as a great ice breaker for your guests and illustrates who you are as a couple. You might find yourself here because you’re wondering… “Where do I start?” It can feel overwhelming diving into the world of wedding table design. We will discuss where to start when creating your tablescape, along with other helpful tips and tricks for curating and implementing your wedding reception table décor. You will also find a collection of wedding day reception table settings to get you inspired. Here’s to creating an unforgettable dinner table for your guests!

Decide on a wedding “theme”. Examples of wedding themes include: Garden Inspired, Fairy Tale, Vintage, Modern, Rustic, Cultural, and Bohemian… just to name a few. Next, add an adjective to describe how you want your reception space to feel. For example: Cozy and Rustic. Romantic and Modern. Friendly and Colorful. Voilà! You’ve narrowed down your inspiration search.

The Elements of the Reception Table. We promise this isn’t chemistry class…but there is a science to the reception table. Potential elements of your reception tables include: place settings, linens, centerpieces, stationary elements (menu, place cards, table numbers), the chairs, favors, and lighting. If you’re going for a minimalist theme, having each of these displayed on every table may not be ideal, whereas a glamorous wedding may be all about the formalities.

Curate your table décor. The best part! Before you dive in to the world of curation, consider…

    1. Your Venue: Are open-flame candles allowed? If your venue is outside, are your items wind proof? What kind of décor is not allowed?

      Tell the story of your happily-ever-after with pictures of your journey at each reception table.

  2. The size and shape of your tables: While round tables may look best with larger, single centerpieces, rectangular tables can sport three (or more) smaller clusters of décor items. Table size and shape also affects the style and size for table linens. We advise finding out these dimensions before falling in love and purchasing linens that don’t fit.
  3. Guest Comfort: Your décor may be amazing and the flowers out of this world, but grandma isn’t going to be happy if she can’t put her plate down or see Uncle Bob who is sitting across from her. Practical table décor can also be stylish. You do not have to sacrifice style for function nor function for style.
  4. What’s already available to you: For some, this means talking with your decorator and/or Day of Coordinator about items they have available for you to use. For others, this means collecting vintage dishes and vases from friends and family.
  5. Have fun! Add a touch of the unexpected. Pops of color, mismatched centerpieces, embarrassing pictures from your childhood… it keeps guests intrigued and your space unique.

TESTING, TESTING, 1, 2, 3! You practice your vows, you practice walking in your wedding day formals, but did you practice your table set-up? Set-up your wedding reception centerpieces on a table with the same dimensions as your venue’s tables or call up your venue and see if you can test out your centerpieces on a table or two. Now, snap a photo – anyone placing your décor the morning of will thank you! As an outdoor venue, we also suggest setting up your décor outside (for several hours) to make sure it’s ready for any elements such as wind.

Here are some helpful tips for fashioning your Gardens High-Top Tables:

Outdoor-Hardy Centerpieces We’ve seen flowers, twinkle lights, and pictures (you name it!) adorning the center of our high-top tables. Centerpieces help tell your story and create a vibe at your outdoor wedding reception; however, we also embrace mother nature here at The Gardens. We recommend that your centerpieces be outdoor hardy (heavy, low center of gravity, not too tall, ready to withstand wind).

Floor Length Tablecloths Utilizing a 120″+ round cloth linens covers the legs of each high-top table and creates an aesthetically pleasing look. Choose a 120″ round linen if you want it to nearly touch the ground or 132″ round linen if you want a billowing, overflowing look that will cover the legs. We recommend not going any bigger, otherwise your guests may face a tripping hazard.

Sashed Linens All linens should be tightly fastened mid-way down when hosting an outdoor wedding and there are so many unique ideas to integrate sashes! Check out the photos below for some cool ideas. We recommend testing out the sash to make sure it’s easy to tie and then stays fastened.

How to seamlessly use round tables at your wedding reception.

Incorporating round tables to create the perfect layout for your wedding reception.

We all know how important it is to create a wedding day that is uniquely yours. Second to the wedding ceremony, the wedding reception has the greatest impact on the wedding day. One of the biggest considerations on the feel and flow of the wedding reception is the table layout. There are two primary tables to consider when working on your table layout – the rectangle banquet table and the round table.

Rectangle banquet tables are typically 6 or 8 feet long. Here at The Gardens, we find the 8-foot rectangle banquet tables to be the most stylish and functional, especially The Gardens Cedar Banquet Tables.

When it comes to round tables, the most common sizes are 60-inch and 72-inch. We prefer the 60-inch round tables compared to the 72-inch round tables. The wider tables make it difficult for guests to converse. The 60-inch round tables have much more potential for intimacy as they can seat six guests, if social distancing is required, or eight guests comfortably.

Some couples envision their wedding reception table layout to incorporate all rectangle banquet tables or all-round tables, but we have found a mixture of rectangle banquet tables and round tables together create the most dynamic layout. Mixing rectangle banquet tables with a handful of round tables creates a dramatic effect.

Looking to introduce your themes or wedding colors into your wedding reception space, use colored linens on the round tables to add to the visual delight of the wedding reception. As far as size, we recommend 120-inch round linens on the 60-inch round tables to create a cascading look that covers the tables’ legs. You can also use the round tables to create a seating hierarchy. For example, use the rectangle banquet tables for the majority of guests and then seat close family at round tables directly in front of the head table.

Round tables can be laid out in either a diamond or square pattern. The square layout offers more space and distancing between tables encouraging more mingling among guests. While the diamond pattern allows for a more compact layout and a higher guest count in the same space. The diamond layout allows for more of a diagonal view of the wedding reception making it better for photography. Only if the venue space has a second story or more will guests be able to see the layout from above. So, when completing your table layout in plan form having it perfectly symmetrical is not necessary.

Tablescaping a round table offers many more opportunities than a rectangle banquet table. The equal spacing from the décor or floral centerpiece to the edge of the round table creates a full dramatic effect. Plus, round tables allow for the ability to have multiple tablescapes. Remember, there is no rule stating every table must be decorated the same.

Follow these four tips for seamlessly using round tables at your wedding reception:

• Use 60-inch tables with eight guests per table.
• Utilize full length linens on round tables to incorporate wedding themes and colors.
• Customize the space by using a mixture of table shapes.
• Choose a table layout pattern, whether square or diamond, which helps create the vision for your event.

Bonus tip: Whenever working on your table layout, make sure to plan for how guests will move through and around the tables. Where are the aisles?

Do not overlook the importance that table choice and layout has on your overall wedding day. The perfect table layout creates harmony and balance helping you achieve the perfect uniquely you wedding reception.

Classic Elegant Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at The Gardens

Elevate the grand entrance of the bride with ceremony gate & doors for the awed admiration of the wedding guests.

Crafted in classic traditional design, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors have the ability to make time stand still. In those sweet moments as the bride readies herself behind the door to the moment of the big reveal when the doors slowly open, everyone is suspended in time.

Glenn Switzer, venue owner & designer, built his first pergola in the late 1980’s while working as a landscape designer. As a frequent traveler, Glenn explored gardens and garden structures throughout the world. To bring what he admired from aboard, Glenn laid out the former landscape nursery, now The Gardens, on the European concept of a formal garden, grid pattern with multiple walkways and access points. He also designed and built a large formal white pergola years before The Gardens was a wedding venue. Maybe it was foreshadowing or even luck, but the white garden pergola was placed in the perfect location for the future Grand Promenade ceremony spot. When it came time to design the Grand Promenade, the location of the white pergola worked perfectly as a 75’ aisle was added down the center.

But how did the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors come to be? It all started with a bride inquiring if The Gardens had any doors that could be place at the entrance of the Grand Promenade for her to have a big reveal moment with her fiancé. In one of those instances that drives Glenn’s wife crazy, Glenn replied, “We don’t have any, but we could build some!” Since the bride was having her ceremony on the Grand Promenade, the design of the gate and doors would mimic the details of the white garden pergola. However, engineering how the posts would stand-up, as well as be mobile, took a bit more pre-planning. Interested in learning how it all came together? One of the detail Glenn really appreciates in the construction of the gate and doors is the use of the old-world style of pounding nails called clinching. It is where a nail is driven all the way through the board and support boards, bent over and driven into the wood to create a tight bond.

A fair amount of time was spent on the doors to ensure they were equal in size and shape, as well as opened evenly. To create a classic romantic look, scalloped cuts were made on the side pieces making a wide enough space for the ushers to stand on either side to open the doors. The 6-foot doors also have a rounded cascading top to ensure even the tallest bride can be completely hidden.

While the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors were designed for the Grand Promenade, it has also been used at the Lath House ceremony location. A rainstorm the morning of a wedding planned on the Grand Promenade resulted in the grass being too wet. So the amazing and flexible staff moved the ceremony gate & door to the entrance of the Lath House. Low and behold, it was an amazing fit there too! That’s what is so inspiring about The Gardens…. its chameleon-like nature that allows for your wedding style to shine through.

Designed in the same style as the Grand Promenade’s pergola, the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors create a classic and elegant look.

Steady and ready. The bride accompanied by her dad prepare for the sweetest walk together down the aisle.

You can choose to place the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors at the entrance to the Lath House or the Grand Promenade.

The ceremony concludes and the couple stroll hand in hand down the aisle and back through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors.

The wedding party assembled in front of the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors in an effort to allow the bride to stay hidden until just the right moment.

While the guests file into the Grand Promenade, they too can enjoy walking through the Wedding Ceremony Gate & Doors. But remember, it’s doors open for everyone except the bride.

Everyone’s attention is right where it should be…..the beautiful bride.

As a designer, Glenn Switzer, the venue owner, has always thought it was important for couples to be free to create an event that reflects who they are as a couple and what is important to them. Ten years ago, when Glenn set out to open the venue, he wasn’t looking to create a cookie cutter experience for couples. Instead, he wanted to create a space where no two weddings were ever the same.

This idea of couples creating a wedding that was unique to them carried over to the reception. Glenn’s vision was to create unique handcrafted items that had the ability to give off different vibes based on the décor items around them. This overall principle of design allows for something that is formal to be dressed down or the ability to take something rustic and elevate it to a formal look. That’s exactly why Glenn created the Head Table Packages as part of the Gardens Originals™ series.

The rustic feel has remained one of the most preeminent wedding styles. So for Glenn it only made seem to design and craft tables with a rustic vibe. Enter the Rustic Refined™ tables. Now let’s get real for a moment. The word “rustic” has been used to describe a variety of things, including old crappy garage sale finds. That’s definitely not what we are going for with the Rustic Refined™ tables. The handcrafted nature of the tables with nice clean lines and unique construction distinguishes it as a one-of-a-kind piece.

With his passion for salvaging and repurposing materials, it’s easy to see why everything at The Gardens has a previous life. Six years before the first wedding ever took place, Glenn disassembled an 1880’s granary constructed out of pine that was situated on his uncle’s farm not far from The Gardens. Working with Ben Finely of Duck Hill Workshop, Glenn and Ben built the Rustic Refined™ tabletops out of the wood used on the interior walls of the granary. Studying the kerf markings (or slits made by the saw cutting) on the tabletops and sides, it’s clear that the wood was cut from a local sawmill along the Cannon River. And the writing and markings on the wood, demonstrate its use as a granary. Side note….the wood siding of the granary was also repurposed as the wall behind the fireplace in the Gardens Suite Dressing Room.

Thanks to many years of constructing rustic pergolas and using the tree limbs in design and building, the method carried over nicely in creating the table bases and legs. Building tables is not a new concept for Glenn, since he has crafted numerous tables, including the Cedar Wedding Banquet Tables and the King’s Harvest Head Table.
